You must stay within sight. This was the standard warning and directive that Zoey was given whenever her maman took her out into her favorite part of the meadow to graze.

Zoey tried really hard to obey, she did, but it was boring to just stand around or move about within such a limited area. So while she would often listen for a short time, inevitably she'd grow bored and start to wander away. Today was no different.

It was a standard warm spring day, with just the barest hint of a breeze. The sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue. Just the kind of day for a boring trip to the meadow to stand around while maman filled her belly. Zoey sighed. She wished that just once, something -anything- would happen to break the monotony of this trip.

Once Liliah settled to graze, Zo managed to stay still for a few moments before her usual restlessness overtook her. From underneath lowered lashes she looked to make sure maman was wholly engrossed in her meal before starting to slip away, a brief guilty thought - I'm sorry, maman - flitted across her mind, and she was off.

She had no set direction in mind, no real objective, so she decided to merely travel whichever way her hooves took her.

Nadia had been out with her parents and siblings at the same field. Nadia was an older foal, just days away from growing, and all in all she always a bit more mature in the way she acted. Out of the corner of her eye she saw the other foal sneaking off, and without must hesitation, she leaned off to the side and followed suite.

It didn't take long for her to catch up with the other foal. "Hey there, what are you up too~?" She pipped at her. Trotting up to her side. And looking down at the other foal.

So intent was Zorana on her escape that she didn't notice the presence of the older foal until she was right next to her and speaking. She nearly jumped out of her skin in surprise. ~Uh-oh, busted ~ Zorana thought, feeling almost like she should be guilty, but not quite managing it. She was disobeying her maman, again, but darn it if she wasn't going to live her life, and explore and learn. This escape was part of that philosophy.

Zoey looked over at the other filly ~ hmm, prolly quite a bit older'n me, but she looks like she could be fun. Nodding her head slightly as she made up her mind, Zoey cast a glance around her to make sure nobody was following her just yet.

"I'm makin' an escape." She stated clearly and matter-of-factly in response to the other's question. "What're you up to?" She tilted her head curiously.

She picked up her pace, hoping to put more distance between her and maman before being forced back into the pattern of monotony that made up her days. She didn't mean any harm, but she just couldn't accept the restrictions that were placed upon her. She needed this escape.

Nadia tilted her head and watched as the other filly sped off. "An escape from what?" There wasn't anything all that threatening in the field, maybe she was playing make believe? If that was the case she wanted to play too!

"Oh I'm not doing much, just following you~" She giggled. The other foal seemed quiet serious about this game. "I want to play too!" She stated, making her way to catch up.

Zorana was ill at ease. The escape was taking too long. If she didn't hurry, maman was sure to catch her. And that was not something that Zoey could bear. She looked around once again, intent cyan eyes scanning for her overprotective parent, and when she was nowhere to be seen, the filly let out a sigh of relief.

"Not here." She looked the striped filly over, trying to determine whether or not she would be a help or hinderance. But, either way, they needed to at least make the forest if she was to be in the clear. "In the forest. I'll tell you there, if you want to know."

And with that, the dusky filly took off at a fast trot, dust kicking up behind her in her hurry. Not even bothering to find out if the other filly was following or not.

This foal was awfully strange. She couldn't play there. Nadia tilted her head, and when the other took off for the forest, her curiosity urged her to follow, and so she did. She galloped loosely after the other foal, and once they reached the forest, Nadia could see the other foal relax.

It was interesting, but her attention was moved from that thought. "So... tell me now?" The shade from the trees felt rather nice, and was cooling her body.

Once within the sheltering shade of the forest, Zoey felt safe enough to slow from the frenzied gallop to a more sedate trot. Just a little ways further in, and she came to a stop. Sure that she was finally safe from being caught by maman, and subjected to another day of boredom, the filly relaxed, a bright grin spreading across her features.

"~Freedom~" she chirped in a sing-song voice.

She shivered once in delight, then realised the other filly was still there. She pondered how to answer the question in a way that wasn't too harsh or critical, but still to get across the reason she was doing this.

"My maman." She paused, not wanting to sound ungrateful or anything, because she truly did love her mother- even when she was overbearing. "She keeps me almost glued to her side, and doesn't let me explore or play, or do nothin'." She stamped a hoof in remembered aggravation. "An' its hard to escape, its like she's got eyes onna back of her head. But today, she got lazy. I just wanted the chance to play without her hovering."

"Did you know there're monsters in the woods?" She randomly asked, remembering why she was so keen on coming to the forest in the first place, aside from the fact she knew her maman was not fond of it.

" Of course~" Nadia nodded, "I am a knight in training. My family and I battle monsters all the time." She beamed. Of course, they were fake, but no one needed to know the truth of that just yet. Once she was older, she'd be able to fight the real ones, her mom said.

"Did you want to go and find some? They aren't that hard to find." A chance to train, Nadia would never pass such a thing up!

Zoey's brow wrinkled in thought. Nadia was a filly, and as a female, she couldn't be a knight could she? Zoey was instructed from the time that she escaped the confines of her basket that she was a lady, and ladies could not have adventures or be knights or do anything that could be construed as fun.

"Girls can be knights?" she blurted out, fascinated. Then she felt ashamed of her outburst, which showed her as ignorant. How she wished she had known such a thing was possible, and that her maman was less protective.

Shoving her discomfort aside, Zoey was determined to make the best of this rare opportunity.

"Do you have any idea where the monsters might be? Have you ever seen a moster before? How does one become a knight?" She wiggled with excitement.

Nadia laughed some, at the other foals excitement. "Well I guess so, because I am, and my moma is too! But I don't really know what what happens to become one... I've been training with my dad, and then my brother and one of his friends because Papa goes easy on me..." She sighed some. "Something about how I'm his little princess..." She shook her head. She had to be a lady too.

"Well they're deeper in the forest." She nodded some in the direction. "They'll be hard to see, so you have to use her mind to really bring them out." That was her way of saying, it was make believe. Mostly because they were to young to fight the real ones... But in this make believe game, they were training.

"That mus' be fun." She perked up at the mention of both the filly and her mom being female knights, proving that it wasn't just some fluke. The mention of other members of, and being a part of a family, caused her happy grin to falter for just a moment. "An' as fun as bein' a knight must be, there's nothing wrong with being a lady."

Just because she hated being one didn't mean there was anything bad about the role. Especially if it wasn't forced on one, and they weren't forced to uphold the image all the time.

Zoey looked deeper into the forest. Given as how she'd never gone much further than this, it was more then likely there were monsters she'd never seen, and with that, her interest was piqued.

"Really? I wants to see monsters. How much further in are they? Show me, show me." The filly fairly bounced up and down in her excitement.

"Well once you enter the forest you have to listen carefully, because they could be anywhere. Some will be smaller, so you have to look, and others will be so huge, they're taller then the trees!" Nadia explained in excitement.

"Here come with me. I'll show you~" She nodded, heading into the forest with no hesitation. She vanished into the bushes and waited for Zoey to follow. And once she did, she gave her the quiet sign.

"Can you hear it? The rumbling sound in the distance?" She hoped that the filly would catch onto the hint, because using the minds eye was the only way to 'really see' the monsters.

Zoey followed Nadia excitedly, carefully listening to her explanations and absorbing her every word. The small mosters sounded like fun to "hunt", but then she heard about ones bigger than trees and she started to seriously reconsider this idea. "M-maybe we should head back." She voiced in a trembling whisper.

When Nadia asked if she heard the noise, Zoey nearly shrieked as some bushes rustled off to their sides. It's just the wind, it's just the wind. She chanted inside her head, trying not to show how much the knowledge had shaken her. There was another noise, and she 'eeped' silently, rushing to catch up with the other filly and gluing herself to her side.

"They aren't too dangerous are they?" At last common sense started to kick in, and Zoey wondered if this outing was such a good idea. There was just so much that could go wrong...

Nadia glanced at her, and she inwardly smiled. The other filly was starting to get scared. And that was a good thing, because the world is a scary place for a foal to be alone. But at the same time for this game, she didn't need to be so frightened.

"Not the small ones. They aren't able to really group together or anything. And being this close to herds and things, you'll only run into the small ones. The big ones are what my parents call 'rare'." She nodded. Hoping that would ease her mind some.

"Behind that rustling bush." The bush was truly rustling because of the wind, but it would work either way. "Come up and give it a little kick." Which she did to show Zoey. "And the monster has been defeated."

Nadia continued to explain, and certain things started to click. Yes there were real monsters out there somewhere, but this... this was a game. Games were meant to be fun. And just like that, any fear or apprehension that she might have felt disappeared.

Getting into the game, Zoey trotted fearlessly over to another bush. That had also been rustling. "You mean like this?"

And with that she gave a rather hard kick. Though, unlike the bush Nadia kicked, which had merely been empty and rustling because of the wind, this bush had been inhabited. The leaves parted suddenly, a small fowl of some sort flying towards the filly and up, frightening her so she stumbled backwards, tripping over her hooves and landing on her rump.

Shaking her head and trying to get to her feet the filly laughed sheepishly. "Ooops."
