Staple to the Past
I stapled a flyer to a telephone pole when I noticed
this pole was accomponied by a million staples
if these staples could talk they would sing
they would tell us of a time before
when people sat on the streets
playing on guitars, singing songs of love of brotherly love
a time with peaceful protests, the walking
the love, the beautiful dancing
each aging hole, rusted staple, ancient nail,
they represent a hope, a dream , a goal
Hear the voices echoing;
Free Speech!
End War!
Equal Rights!
staple over staple, flyer over flyer
decades before,
staple with the decades today
Walk the streets of Berkley, on Telegraph avenue
join the aging hippies lost in a time before, singing the sounds of the past
Their dreams will carry on,
staple by staple, "we fight the good fight"
