Every news story I see has a different idea about what it does, and some of them are truly bizarre. And inaccurate. Here's a link to the actual text, if anyone's interested.

My neighborhood is mad at yours.

San Francisco calling for a boycott of Arizona
Quote:
(04-26) 15:36 PDT San Francisco -- San Francisco's Board of Supervisors are calling for a sweeping boycott of Arizona in the wake of that state's harsh new rules aimed at illegal immigrants.

A resolution that will go before the board Tuesday will call for San Francisco to end any and all contracts with Arizona-based companies and to stop doing business with the state.

"We want to send a message," Supervisor David Campos told a rally on the steps of City Hall this morning. "There are consequences when you target a whole people."

Last Friday, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed a law making it a crime for an immigrant to be in the state without proof of legal residency and requiring police to seek out and detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally.

The law, which will take effect this summer, is certain to face legal challenges. President Obama has called the bill "misguided" and ordered the Justice Department to determine whether it violates civil rights.

There's no way to tell yet how a boycott of Arizona would affect San Francisco.

"We're trying to figure that out now," Campos said. "We do know that we won't be sending any city employees to conferences in Arizona."

City Attorney Dennis Herrera also called for a wide-ranging boycott of Arizona and pledged to have attorneys in his office work with the city to identify contracts with Arizona companies and help break those contracts where possible.

The boycott resolution won't be the only immigration-based measure on the board's agenda Tuesday. The supervisors also are expected to pass a resolution condemning audits by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement designed to force local employers to fire undocumented workers.

The resolution calls for Congress to place a moratorium on "piecemeal" immigration enforcement efforts and encourages Congress and the president to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill "that prioritizes keeping families together, upholding civil and human rights and promoting economic justice."

LOL, everyone's mad at us. Except Texas, they're jealous. Just imagine the horror if the rumors about Arpaio running for governor turned out to be true, and he won. (I don't think that's going to happen, but still.) We're trying to send a message too: sick of out of control illegal immigration! Obama and the Dems will probably try to kill the bill though.

The Mexican President isn't happy either.

Mexican president slams Arizona immigration law
The law has raised fears that Hispanic immigrants could be racially profiled and reignited the hot-button political issue of immigration reform in the United States, which at times has touched off fierce criticism from some Latin American leaders.

"Criminalizing immigration, which is a social and economic phenomena, this way opens the door to intolerance, hate, and discrimination," Calderon told a meeting with Mexican immigrant groups.

"My government cannot and will not remain indifferent when these kinds of policies go against human rights," Calderon said, adding that he would bring up the new law when he meets with Obama next month during an official visit to Washington.

Arizona's Republican governor signed a bill into law last week requiring police to determine whether people are in the country legally and allowing them to detain suspected illegal immigrants.

The toughest immigration law in the United States, it triggered a chorus of criticism from leaders of the Democratic party, including President Barack Obama.

The majority of the 11 million people believed to be living illegally in the United States are immigrants from Mexico, which shares a lengthy border with its northern neighbor and has been pushing for years for comprehensive U.S. reform to improve immigrant rights.

Set to take effect 90 days after the current legislative session adjourns, the law requires state and local police with "reasonable suspicion" to determine if people are in the country illegally. It also makes it a crime to transport illegal immigrants and hire day laborers off the street. (Reporting by Adriana Barrera; Writing by Kevin Gray; Editing by Catherine Bremer and Eric Walsh)

Of course he isn't. As Victor David Hanson reports, the rich Mexicans are pleased that they can export their "riffraff*" to the US, which unfairly has so much more. (It's not as if we worked for it or had better standards or anything!) They can't sneer at us if we stop picking up their tab. Panic time!

EDIT: more lulz from FB
If the image doesn't show, it's a screencap from MSNBC with the headline "Law makes it a crime to be an illegal immigrant."
Hmm....now why would anything illegal be affected by the law? I just don't understand.

*VDH also notes that of the illegal Mexican-Oxacan immigrants who come here, many are otherwise law-abiding workers who contribute to our economy, get their kids educated, and end up being our gain, Mexico's loss.

Another news article says "the law makes it a crime to be in the state illegally."

Apparently my neighborhood is also mad at my neighborhood... Phil Gordon, mayor of Phoenix, is suing the state 'on behalf of the city.' The city council doesn't support the suit though.

You know how they say "homophobes" are closet homosexuals? Perhaps the champions of illegal immigrants are closet slavers and price gougers. They love cheap labor and biddable people.

Illegals here are too scared to go to the regular, English-speaking grocery stores, so the smaller Spanish-speaking ones like Mi Tierra get their business instead, and they are free to jack up prices because the illegals aren't about to comparison-shop. It's probably the same with the other businesses. I don't approve of our porous borders, but you have to be really low to take advantage of the illegals.

...How do these crazy city leaders get elected???

Something similar occurred to me awhile ago. On the one hand, when they talk about civil rights they say that illegals should be given the same rights and wages and working conditions as citizens.

Then when they want to talk about why we need illegal aliens, they say it's because they're a source of cheap labor, prices would skyrocket if we didn't have them to do cheap work, they do jobs Americans don't want, will work in poor conditions, etc.

It seems very hypocritical.

Illegals there are scared? Why? I mean, they don't normally have a problem going to english speaking stores do they?

I don't think they listen to themselves speak.

This is what a Mexican-American told me: the illegal immigrants are aware they could be deported if they are caught, most do not speak English, and feel more comfortable going to Spanish groceries. Most of the ones who come here are not criminals (other than that one glaring status) and so they have no wish to stir any interest. A scared, unskilled, reluctant to speak population has its uses to unscrupulous folk. It makes me want to cry!!

If protesters truly cared about other people, they would cooperate in banning illegal immigration, and go to the third world countries and help the poor there. More importantly, they would help the poor here.

That explanation makes sense.... it's certainly not a phenomenon I've seen here though, except for when Arpaio's doing a sweep or something.

Illegal immigration is a very messy issue with no solution that would work for all cases. I do think we need immigration reform, it's just that whenever the subject comes up it's not about changing the system, it's code for amnesty.
