• The Eight Immortals •
A collection of eight spirits that, for their honorable conduct in their human lives, were allowed to taste one of the Peach of Immortality, a legendary fruit that grants the taster eternal life. The spirits are believed to have been born in the Tang or Song Dynasty and continue to be revered today as household protector spirits.

• Lan Tsai-Ho •
(sometimes known as Lan Caihe)
The fifth of the Eight Immortals, usually depicted as a gender- ambiguous youth of about sixteen years. In artwork, he/she is always shown carrying a basket of fruit and according to legend, is also talented in singing and playing the flute and castanets. Despite the generally nonsensical nature of this spirit's verses, there is a certain spiritual depth to them that kept the youth from looking entirely insane during his/her mortal existence. Though not known for animal charming, Lan's legend states that his/her final moments as a mortal were spent intoxicated at an inn, where a crane, allured by the youth's soul-searching songs, snatched him/her away to the heavens.
The exact nature of Lan's songs are indefinite, with some tales describing them simply as meritorious and deep while others suggest a certain supernatural element to them, such as being melodic omens of events to come. The spirit's personality is also somewhat ambiguous, though it is very clear that he/she thinks little of material possessions. Even during his/her mortality, when Lan's meager livelihood was earned through streetside performances and begging, the youth did not seem to take the concept of money very seriously, often leaving it scattered on the ground for other beggars to pick up.
In artwork, Lan is shown wearing a tattered blue gown of no particular gender inference, a wide wooden belt, and a single sandal, with the other foot left bare. He/she is said to go half- naked during colder seasons and dress heavily in the warmer ones. This seems to symbolize the uncomfortable life of the impoverished.

• The Basics •
My interpretation of Lan for this shop will be a boy in his early- mid teenage years with no apparent, gender-defining qualities. Though I am currently questing him as a Customer, I haven't made an absolute decision about this and would like to know what quest visitors have to suggest.

• Personality in Six Traits •
Spiritual . . . Lan has little regard for material wealth and as a result, does not take such things very seriously. He finds excessive indulgence and adornment to be a sign of spiritual weakness and prefers to aid others spontaneously, rather than be asked (or worse yet, feel obliged) to do a favor.
Mirthful . . . As far as Lan is concerned, there isn't much wrong with his life. While he doesn't wander around with a smile constantly plastered across his face, the way he moves and speaks is suggestive of a rather content being.
Peaceful . . . As much as he may bring out argumentativeness in others, Lan himself will not take arguments seriously. He is calm in almost everything he does.
Pestersome . . . One misfortune of being a human-turned- immortal is, of course, the boredom that comes with existing for eternity. Lan sometimes misses his simple life as a preaching beggar and will not hesitate to not only point out another's moral faults, but insist on advising them about it (both directly and indirectly). His seemingly everlasting patience is especially irritating; it's almost as if it says "you'll cave before I do".
Scattered . . . it isn't uncommon for Lan to forget important things and only reremember them at the most inopportune moment. Being a bit of a philosopher, his head is probably in the clouds a little too much for his own good, which causes him to have a habit of missing important details, mishearing things, or ignore others entirely. A good indication of the spirit's interest in someone/something is his significantly improved ability to pay attention to it.
??? . . . Halp? D:
Fun Facts . . . Lan is a great fan of proverbs and has spent quite a bit of his existence learning new ones (from all eras and cultures)... he tries not too pass up too many chances to use them; otherwise, Lan's speech is rather plain in terms of vocabulary; . . .

• Concept Appearance •
In the event that Lan is won as a semi- or full-custom, there are certain appearance qualities that I would like him to have, which I will list/plan/expand here.
A big part of this pet's concept is his gender neutrality, which can be achieved by a roundish face with no extremely manly or womanly features, loose, plain clothing, and a nondefining hair style (possibly a simple, pulled-back braid).
According to legend, Lan is usually garbed in a tattered blue gown (or robe) with a wide wooden belt, wearing only one sandal. He is always shown carrying a basket of fruit, but may sometimes also have a flute or castanets (finger-size cymbals) on his person.
I picture his facial expressions and poses being suggestive of his worry-free and immaterial mentality. He seems like the sort of spirit that would be totally at peace with himself.

Lan Tsai-Ho is a figure of Taoist mythology, not an original character. While my personal interpretation of him for the sake of this shop is of my own imagination, he is still common artistic property.

I like the idea of him more as a customer too, because it would fit the mythology better.
Maybe his sixth trait could be "Studious"? It sounds like he studies, because of how he can play instruments and talk about proverbs.
