Azzo was as normal for weekends, sitting on the porch steps, most lights off in the house save the one he was reading by and one casting shadows in the halls. His honey brown eyes were looking over the want ads in the paper when he felt a familiar ting, all too close to his house.

He frowned, nose wrinkling. He hated when they came this close, he set the paper down eyes glancing down the road. Narrowed, he could lead it to the near by shopping district and ditch into a dumpster. They were just emptied yesterday. They couldn't be that full right?

He sighed, it was either that or go inside and ignore it, but then what if a neighbor got attacked. Azzo got up reluctantly, leaving the paper folded, on the porch, under a glass that prior to this was full of tea. "So what are you this time?" He muttered, it was approaching fast. He paused realizing he didn't have much to help defend himself.

So instead he waited to make sure it was close enough, before taking off as fast he could to the shopping center. "I bet anything it's going be something stupid. Like a skunk or raccoon." He muttered, he wondered if skunk youmas left a god awful smell like actual skunks did.

The air was electric with the snap and sizzle of dark energy. Sailor Ares knew it well, but it had been a long time since she had felt it. The hazy mist of the mirror was behind her. Now she was embracing this new world with arms outstretched and eyes narrowed. There were youma to be dusted, Wiseman to be eviscerated, and a whole wide world of exploring to do.

But first (and always) -- it was time to work.

Sailor Ares considered school a waste of time, and hobbies even more worthless (unless they increased your physical or mental prowess). When she patrolled, she did not wander; she prowled in shadows, hid in blind corners. This body did not possess her full powers, but her mind ticked fast, whirling with many lifetimes of battle experience.

Hidden in a dark alleyway, Sailor Ares stilled at the sound of approaching footsteps, quick ones too. Someone was running. There was no familiar hum of energy, light or dark, and as the boy broke past the alleyway into the shopping center, Ares registered him as a human.

Behind the boy, a squat youma with stubby legs and arms, a square torso, and no head wobbled along. For such a bulky thing, it did not seem in a hurry to catch up. She had a clear shot to kill it then and there, but Ares waited, watched. Was this a trick?

The youma plopped itself on the ground, legs and arms disappearing into the square box. Then a musical chime sounded, and the top of the box ripped open, launching a coiled clown-like creature with red eyes and sharpened teeth straight for Azzo. The youma outstretched its hand, grabbed the boy by both legs, and then sprung right back toward its box, suspending him in the air.

It was a youma-in-the-box!

Azzo hadn't actually looked behind him or he'd been gaping at what he saw. He squeaked when he was grabbed and hoisted in the air he was struggling to break himself free. "God damn you. Let me go you b*****d."

He was trying to swing so he could punch it in it's ugly face or nose or something without getting bit. He was hoping it wouldn't eat him. That would be unfortunate, there also seemed to be no senshi around. Even more unfortunate, he managed to wiggle one leg free and give him a swift but clumsy kick to the head. It was hard to defend yourself hanging in the air by your legs.

When he managed to graze a kick off the head the thing roared at him. "s**t.... Someone HELP. Get me down!" It looked like he was going to get a chuck out of his body. As the Youma got a hold of his torso with the recently freed hand.

Had he known Ares was there he would've asked her what she was waiting for. The other black clad senshi he'd seen was more than willing to charge into a fight and kill something. Like that giant tree....

Sailor Ares waited, watching. It was a surprise-attack youma that relied on ensnaring its opponents. It appeared that it had no magical properties and was instead based on force. Lucky for her, it also breathed. An evaluative smile crossed her features. Ares loved the cavaliers, she really did, but she did not go rushing headlong into battle hefting a sword. She planned, she strategized, she ran scenarios.

The youma lifted Azzo higher, craning its head back and opening its mouth. Uh oh. Planning time was over. Surprise was on Ares's side, and she had no intention of giving that up by announcing her position. Leaping from the shadows, Ares landed on top of the youma, hands gripping at the flat lid that contained the springing clown. With a stiff twist, she snapped it off like bark from a tree and then used it to slam the clown portion in the back of the head.

It bobbed forward, dropping Azzo to the ground with a thud. "Civilian. Get lost," she ordered, pointing an authoritative finger. The youma roared and shuddered, throwing Ares off its back. She landed on the ground in a roll, popping back up to her feet with a frown.

Oh good, now it was getting interesting.

Azzo got about as long as he could, scrambling out the clowns reach and down the road a bit further, eyes searching to make sure he hadn't lead it to other youma. Which would be bad, but had not. They were clear for now. He was closer to the dumpster and hid behind it. He'd thrown himself in it but the way he'd landed was probably going to end in a nice enough bruise.

From a safe distance, and behind the oversize trashcan the pup peered out over it watching curiously. Considering the fact, his home was the OTHER way. He wasn't about to go taking to long way just to get there and end up in another foot chase. He'd thank her later, for now it was spectator time. He watched her roll though and pop back up to her feet, almost gracefully.

The stumbling youma shifted to face Ares, bobbing forward with claws extended. She sidestepped the first strike and caught the second in her side. Damn. Her reflexes should be faster. Everything about her needed to be faster. She could feel where the slicing claw had scraped her arm, warm blood leaking from the cut.

Now it was personal.

Her arms locked firmly around the name of the monster, one heel planted in its stomach. The youma seemed uncertain of what was happening. It continued to claw and scratch. Sailor Ares threw all of her weight backwards into a somersault, kicking the youma over her head. The two rolled and rolled, each scratching at the other before colliding with a lamp post. The youma took the impact and exploded in a cloud of dust.

Ares got back to her feet. Gray eyes strayed to her shoulder: youma dust. "Messy," she said, frowning. She brushed the dust off of her shoulder, and then walked toward the spot where the civilian was unsuccessfully hiding.

"You're fine, stop cowering." She postured in front of him, victorious. "That youma was hardly a challenge."

Azzo watched impressed, a clown in the box was not something he'd expected as far as Youma went. He shuttered, at least he liked most clowns...

He watched as the two collided into the lamppost impressed when the Youma was dusted, when she said stop cowering though, he blinked. He looked like he was scared? "I... was staying out of your way... Thank you" He said softly as he walked from behind the dumpster.

Looking at her noting her arm he frowned pulling out a handkerchief. "You're bleeding." He said offering her the white piece of fabric. He felt bad she was bleeding because he'd lured the thing this way. "You can use this to clean it up." He added softly, hoping she wouldn't take offense.

"Staying out of the way is a good strategy," she lowered her voice, "for a civilian." Sailor Ares was not a soldier of the people; she was a soldier of the war. She defended humans because they were the natural resource that the war involved. Also -- Selene asked it of her. There was no great desire to save the little people, just a desire to win.

The cut on her arm was slowly bleeding, but it would be healed by the time she woke up in the morning. "It's nothing. This cut is just a mistake." Ares ignored the handkerchief. The blood was a reminder of how much work she had left to do, no way would she wipe it away. She looked down the ridge of her nose at the dark-haired boy. A spark of familiarity struck her belatedly.

"Azzo," she said sternly, "what are you doing wandering in the shopping mall at night? It's dangerous for civilians. Invest in a bomb shelter."

Azzo nodded, "So I've learned." He said softly eyes wondering over her. Her bodice was black where the other senshi's were white. Obviously she was a senshi or she wouldn't've saved him. The Negaverse isn't that kind.

He paused, "So it won't get infected then?" He asked brown eyes looking at her, "I feel bad you got hurt on my account." He said softly, foot scuffing the ground.

He paused, looking at her almost confused, "You know me..." He said softly shaking his head, he should be getting use to this by now. "It was in my neighborhood. I could feel it looking for someone to hunt. I didn't want any of the kids or adults that couldn't feel it to get hurt." He said, not sure why he divulged the information but maybe she wouldn't think he was crazy. The others thought he was crazy, he thought he was crazy... why couldn't there be one person to not think he was crazy. Mr. Nguyen said he wasn't crazy, but Mr. Nguyen didn't know quite what Azzo meant by danger.

"...I know I sound crazy don't I?" He frowned, mixed with a slight agitation, "I couldn't do anything to stop it but to lead it away from where the families and people were that it shouldn't have to hurt. My friends, my family... I've been told to stop doing that, stop putting myself in danger... but how can I?" He said shamefully.

Azzo's concern made Ares quirk an eyebrow. She might have laughed in his face, but it irked her too much to think that he might be trying to treat her like some weakling who couldn't handle the pain -- well, basically like a civilian. "I'm a senshi," she said, fixing him with a quizzical look. "I don't even feel this." A lie. Ares felt it. Ares just wasn't going to recognize that in front of the civilian.

"It is my duty to protect civilians. So I protect them." She raised one eyebrow. "Or would you prefer I let you attempt to fight it off on your own?"

Sailor Ares wasn't been sarcastic, just making a point. She liked when the civilians groveled in gratitude before her, but the suggestion that she was oh so injured rankled her pride. Azzo seemed uncertain, nervous. She expected a little more gratitude, but decided not to press the issue.

There was something dangerously noble about leading youma away from his family. Noble, and stupid. He was fortunate, however, in that he was speaking to one of the only senshi in Destiny City who knew that his youma senses were not insanity but truth. "I believe you," she said, though it was devoid of compassion. "I know that you can sense youma. It isn't crazy, but I wouldn't go around telling everyone that because it sounds crazy. You realize that, don't you?" An idea was forming in the back of Ares's head.

Azzo frowned slightly when she refused it again, he nodded softly. "Alright, Thank you." He said about as soft as his nod was.

He shook his head, "No... I'd rather not fight it on my own... I've had a set of broken ribs before. I think once is enough for now. It seems kick boxing lessons aren't that useful against them anyways."

He paused "Plus I know that's stupid to fight them on my own that is, I don't have bad a** powers like you guys, so to speak. I just don't like seeing people hurt." He added in, he wasn't trying to make her feel bad, it was that he felt bad she did get hurt.

He blinked, "You do?" He seemed unsure for a second before nodding. At least someone confirmed he wasn't crazy besides Mel. "I know it sounds crazy. And a little bit irritating when someone tells you to go another way home and you can't do that because you know there's another monster lurking that way."

He paused, "You are senshi right?" It was a small streak of curiosity that got him asking, "I mean your outfits are different than the others, I saw one with a chain a few days ago or whenever it was." He was still looking at the details of her fuku. "The detail is pretty neat too..." He paused realized he was staring a bit before pulling his eyes back up to her and smiling sheepishly in attempts to wordlessly apologize for staring.

On one level, Sailor Ares could sympathize with Azzo. She knew what Barren Pines had done, what it still did to her shared mind. She knew that it only brought questions when people wanted answers. What she didn't like was how this civilian continued to fixate on everything he couldn't do, and then answered it by choosing to do the most stupid and dangerous options on the table.

Ares pursed her lips. "Broken ribs are the least of your worries. There are much worse things that can happen to you if you insist on parading around at night like some vigilante." She placed a hand on each hip, her mouth softening into a frown. "I get it. It's frustrating. But when you go out like this, you make more work for people like me. Not to mention, you know, the risk of a senshi not being there the next time you stumble in to trouble." She quirked an eyebrow at him. It was good that he was trying to improve himself, but this battle was not one that civilians could fight. Ares believed that wholly.

When he asked if she was a senshi, she raised one eyebrow slowly. "What else would I be?" Ares followed his eyes and then cleared her throat. "I am a senshi under Queen Nehelenia, the True Queen. She is the one who will deliver the Earth." That was mostly true. Selene was Queen of the Black Moon, but in Ares's book, she was the true queen of all the lands they touched. And why not? There was no ruler more supreme than Selene. The civilians might as well learn that now.

Azzo nodded softly, eyes lowering slightly to the ground. "Yes, the Negaverse..." He said with a hushed tone, he'd seen them. He knew the existed now...

He sighed, "I'll try to stay out of trouble and out of anyone's way." He seemed as if he'd been scolded but not like those he got from his father. "I do occasionally end up out late at night, I'll try to stop for the most part... but if I have to run late night errands for something I'll avoid any Youma I can." He assured her. He'd been trying to do that most of the time anyways. He was normally successful. He couldn't say the same about the negaverse, he didn't know where they were, what shadows they lurked in.

He paused, "I wasn't sure. You look so different from the white clad ones." He nodded when she mentioned Queen Nehelenia, it was all almost like a fairy tale. Only this one was an epic disaster movie too. He paused, "What should I call you? Sailor..." He paused looking at her.

His eyes roamed the Area they were in, everything here seemed mostly quite. There were a few crickets that could be heard in the distance, but he didn't feel any youma close by so that was good. At least he could thank her by name and head home with little to no more excitement.

Ares shook her head. "Not just the Negaverse. There are plenty of things that could kill you in Destiny City. What's important is that you prepare yourself physically and mentally and--" Her train of thought was lost and jumped tracks to another. "Tell me, Azzo, have you read The Secret? It's a very powerful book." Damn, if only she had a copy. Her own was dutifully tagged with color-coded sticky tabs for quick reference.

It had been so casually picked up while strolling through the bookstore, and now Ares felt she had the manifesto to her life plan that she had always wanted. Why not share that information with others? "It says a lot, you should read it, but the key part is that you need to think about the thing that you want... and then it will happen." There was more to it than that, but Ares didn't want to give away the entire book.

It occurred to her belatedly that he had asked her something. "I'm Sailor Ares," she said, squaring her shoulders unconsciously, "Soldier of Smoke. I fight for Queen Nehelenia and the warriors of the Black Moon Kingdom." Strike a pose. "With us in Destiny City, things are going to start changing." Her eyes dipped to Azzo. "You'll see."

Azzo nodded, "I'm sure. I'm not sure anything surprises me anymore. Speically when cats act weird and I swear they understand me." He shook his head, "Though that's another thing I shouldn't mention to people."

He paused The Secret. He pondered the name, "I don't think I have but I'll make a point to stop by and pick it up. I've been in the library a lot lately, trying to find things that my grandfather use to preach about." He said eyes flitting up to the stars for a few seconds.

"Think about the thing that I want?" He said softly, eyes being pulled back to her, the dog haired boy's head tilted slightly, what did he want? He wanted to help, of course, but he also wanted to have better control over bad situations. He also wanted his friends to be safe. There were lots of things he wanted, some weren't practical, he knew people were going to get hurt. "Some of the things I want aren't practical, possible." He was looking at the wound again, "I do want to help though, but helping at this point looks like staying away."

He wrinkled his nose. "I'll read the book though, anything to help me feel even the slightest bit in control of my life." He shook his head, Barren Pines had screwed up his control. He hated that.

"Nice to meet you Sailo Ares." He said, even though they had already met. He nodded, "Hopefully for the best." He said, "The others seem a bit...." What was the word, incapable wasn't it. They were capable, "They don't work as a team it seems..." It was a lame finish. He'd seen that at the tree though, it looked like it took a force of nature, and Princess Chronos to reorganize them. "It took a... Princess to get them willing to fight with each other." He said softly with a shake of his head.

He shifted looking at the moon trying to gauge the time, "I should probably start heading back home... In case grams gets up and starts looking for me." He looked at her, "You're free to walk with if you want. Despite there not being any Youma, it seems, within the distance back to my place."

He wasn't sure if he'd be wasting her time, and he didn't want to be if she could be out saving someone else instead of chatting with him. However, it was nice to have someone that understood. Even Melody said he needed someone that understood.
