Tomoe 巴 Nickname: None ( have fun with this ) Name Meaning: Japanese, huge comma design ( when written with alternate kanji or hiragana, it can also mean friend or earth sprouting ) Spirit: Zashiki-warashi Home Region: Old residential districts of Kyoto Occupation: Former wandering house spirit, currently an attendant at a prestigious bathhouse for spirits
Height: 3'8" Weight: 45 lbs. Hair Color: Charcoal black Eye Color: Opalescent ( lavender/pink ) Skin Tone: Pale Other Features: Perpetual blush on her cheeks, knowing smile ( best characterized as ":>" )
Speaking Mannerisms: Formal and polite, if not a bit outdated in vocabulary choice; it should also be noted that she speaks with a Kyoto accent
Likes: Patchouli, flower arranging, tea, odango, telling stories, proverbs Dislikes: Bad days, the smell of eggs, cats, skyscrapers, socks Strengths: Hard working, polite, sticks firmly to her morals, good dispenser of advice Weaknesses: Cynical, "old woman" attitude, tendency to use outdated phrases, unable to relax, stress smoking
Personality: When it comes to business, Tomoe is always exceedingly polite, busy, and hard-working. None could call her lazy, and most would find her a pleasure to be around. After hours though, she is an old woman in a child's body. She spends leisure time doing rather mundane activities (such as flower arranging) and enjoys a good bout of gossip as much as the next person. When she spouts outdated phrases and vocabulary it can come as quite a surprise to those who don't know that she has been around since the Tokugawa shogunate.
She has a tendency to harp on those who shirk their duties, and always encourages everyone to do their best.. all while she's continually running around. She feels that they should be grateful to have such work to do, when steady work for spirits in this day and age is so difficult to come by. It isn't as though she particularly loves her job, as she has bad days like everyone else ( to which she finishes off by smoking a kiseru on the roof and grumbling to any available ear ). But she would rather keep busy than idle in modern homes with so many modern conveniences, where there is no more room for a Zashiki-warashi to do her magic.
History: Tomoe is much older than what her appearance might cause you to think. She has seen the fall of the feudal period, the end of isolationism, the destruction and rebuilding of her hometown Kyoto after the war and the passing of the days of imperial Japan. Needless to say, she is feeling very lost and tired in this modern world. While most of her companions had left to inhabit houses in the mountains or gone on to other career fields, Tomoe stubbornly clung to her ideals, very much the old woman. She had watched over houses of great samurai clans ( and perhaps ruined some upon her departure . . ), or great geisha houses! Despite this, though, she was feeling lonely with the lack of her companions to gossip with regularly.
Whispers among passing spirits reached her, and told her of a bathhouse.. and the Zashiki-warashi decided that perhaps it was time for this old dog to learn some new tricks after all.
Finally worn out from the upheavals of human wars and excited about the prospect of a new career field, she took on work at the bathhouse as an attendant. She can neither confirm nor deny that she enjoys the job better than her previous stint, but it holds more dignity than saying you're the resident apartment sprite.

A household spirit resembling a child of either gender from about three to twelve years of age. The name zashiki-warashi comes from the interior of Iwate Prefecture, but similar legends are found all over Japan. It is often said that when this being dwells in a house, its family will be prosperous, but when it leaves, the house will fall into ruin, and also that the zashiki-warashi is never seen, save for just as it is about to leave. Its presence however, is often marked by the mischief it does to sleeping people, such as moving pillows about and pulling on bedding.
There are different kinds of zashiki-warashi which vary in pleasantness, with the chōpirako variety said to be pretty and white in color, and the notabariko or usu-tsuki-warashi sort said to crawl out from beneath the dirt floor and creep about, making noises like pounding a mill-stone and causing unpleasant feelings. The latter sort seems to be connected to old infanticidal customs called mabiki (thinning-out), which often ended in burying unwanted infants somewhere in the house, such as under a dirt floor or a mill-stone.
To attract and maintain a zashiki-warashi in the home, it is said the spirit must be noticed, appreciated and cared for properly, much in the manner one would raise a child, though too much attention may drive it off. As the zashiki-warashi is child-like in nature, it is prone to playing harmless pranks and occasionally causing mischief. They might for instance sit on a guest's futon, turn people's pillows over or cause sounds similar to kagura music to be heard from rooms no one uses. Sometimes they leave little footsteps in ashes. There are different variations as to who can see the zashiki-warashi; usually this is limited to inhabitants of the house, sometimes to children.
