It was just before midnight on a school night. Sailor Taranis had been out since ten, but it had been quiet. He'd seen neither hair nor hide of a youma or Negaverse agent. The peace was almost disturbing. Were they gearing up for something?

Most of his patrolling was done either alone or with Sailor Magellan. He'd been in a fair number of battles with other senshi, but at heart, Taranis was not a team player. He preferred to do this own thing and just adjust if another senshi entered the fray. Sometimes, he needed the help, not that he was keen on admitting it.

Okay, so he definitely wasn't keen on admitting it. He was at least a big enough person to realize when someone was useful -- like Sailor Dylan, or even Iris, and even that coin-wielding Rosalind.

Weariness tugged at Sailor Taranis's eyes, and he took a seat on the rooftop of a salon. He'd never actually been inside the place, but he certainly hung out on its roof a lot. Under a starry sky, Taranis felt a little more at peace, but something was troubling him. It was his tiredness, his lethargy, his overwhelming sense that they would never find the Princess and that everyone would die or have their heads eaten by Tanzanite.

Sailor Taranis rested his elbows on his bent knees and buried his face in his hands.

-Polaris found herself alone more often then she would have liked, and tonight was no different. She'd worked with handfuls of senshi throughout her months as a warrior of justice.. and yet.. somehow it never seemed to stick. It was likely her dedication, her over the top nature, her smothering grip and bossiness that drove them all away. And so she was alone again as she peered across the rooftops, pausing mildly when she noticed the familiar little p***k of power eminating nearby.

She crossed the deli, even this late homey scents still wafted through the air, and over the laundrymat. Building after building until she spotted what she assumed to be the source of the power, eyes squinting through the distance and the dark to try and make out anything on the crouched person. Unfamiliar.. but the power source seemed to be that of an ally.

Next verse, same as the first.

Poised on the other edge of the building she called out, assuming the other would have felt her arrival, but cautious nonetheless.- "Run off all the monsters already?" -Her voice was friendly, perhaps overly eager. Always good to start out with a compliment even though.. from her experience.. there was a large chance the other senshi would have an 'attack' completely incapable of running away anything.-

Sailor Taranis lifted his head when a voice split the silence. At first, his face was surprised. The expression turned to a frown, and then softened back to apathy. He was too tired to fight, even with the likes of Aurora Namid.

The day that the small child (a Cardian) attacked him had been scarring, but before he passed out, he remembered seeing Aurora become Sailor Polaris, a senshi he had met independently of her human counterpart. He saw her transform into this fuku too. Taranis knew much more about Polaris and Aurora than the Senshi of Magnetism probably knew.

It was ironic, really, that she would be the one to show up when his spirits were so low.

"Polaris," he said, eyes raising to her face. The outfit was skimpy and see through. It distracted Taranis only for a moment. He'd seen senshi wearing weirder things. Hell, he looked like a Boy Scout. "No youma to scare off. Quiet night." Taranis frowned again.

"Do you usually patrol around here? I haven't seen you before. I do. I patrol here." It wasn't defensive, but it wasn't quite conversational either. His lips were just moving, spitting out words while his face was frozen in melancholy.

-As he'd turned, she prepared herself for introductions. Readied herself for some self important and heroic pose, for her name and whatever little tag line happened to pop out along with it. Usually it was "guiding light from the north" for that's what she felt she was, even before she'd ever transformed for the first time. But it was cut abruptly short as her name was spoken for her, feet drawing her curiously a few small steps closer to try and better take in his identity. Wait... his?

She'd vaguely seen Castor before.. and Regulus too. But she didn't know any other male senshi. If she hadn't been so disturbed by his use of her name she might have been excited. Boy senshi were unique and tough. Not to mention white knight dreams of senshi romance.. The thought of Regulus and Europa made her ever more aware this senshi's sex again. And yet while her heart fluttered and pattered her hands travelled subconciously downwards, crossing awkwardly in front of her bare stomach, gloved fingers seeming to try and push the edges of her skirt further down.. as if the fabric covered anything in the first place.-

"Did I... meet you at the big senshi meeting..?" -He looked almost entirely unfamiliar.. why wasn't she placing him? Her tone matched the fretful look on her face, lingering even onto the answer of his question.- "I try to patrol all over the place so I move around alot. Never know where the next hot spot will be.."

Sailor Taranis did not look at her. He was still hunched over, staring at the flat gray of the industrial roof. Up a few feet, the eave overhang was tiled with brown Spanish-style pieces. No one could see the actual top so the place probably just put the pretty tiles where they could be seen and saved money by cementing the center.

"No," he said flatly. "I've never been invited to a senshi meeting. I might not have been around then."

Taranis was aware that much had passed in the time he went unawakened. Some days, it angered him. Why didn't Derp find him sooner? Why hadn't she changed him the first month he was in Hillworth and not the last? It was just another question that he figured would never be answered.

"I'm Sailor Taranis," he volunteered, belatedly adding, "Senshi of Sand."

He did not volunteer any information about how he knew her, or that he knew her civilian identity either. Taranis was too distracted to be intentionally cruel, even to the likes of Aurora Namid.

-It was difficult to talk to someone who wasn't facing you, and instead of taking the hint that just maybe he didn't WANT to talk to her, she cut the distance even more pausing only once there was but another stride or three seperating them. She shifted from one boot to the other. He introduced himself but made no move to shake her hand, salute, or even make eye contact. Strange.. unfriendly perhaps. She pondered his words mildly.-

"Ahhh, a new kid on the block." -It was hard to make out his power level due to the unconventionality of his fuku, but his words had answered it.- "Well welcome Taranis. If you ever need any help just let me know. New solider 101 is my specialty." -Her fingers lifted to make the sign of a cellphone despite the fact that his eyes wouldn't see it. Sand was promising, in her eyes she invisioned enemies getting swallowed up in giant sand pits.

She didn't leave, simply standing behind him like a creepy statue her eyes watching out over the city. She was quiet for a long while before finally musing.- "It's almost eerie the nights when nothing shows up. Maybe they've just gotten better at hiding..." -Even as an optimist she couldn't convince herself the reasoning was because they were doing such a good job.-

Sailor Taranis did not respond to her offer to help. Sailor Magellan was his senshi mentor, that was that. Besides, knowing that Aurora Namid lurked beneath the fuku made him skeptical of her usefulness. They could barely stand each other as civilians. What would make things so different as senshi? Their appearances might change, but the personality was precisely the same.

He tilted his chin upward, gazing at the moon. It was a crescent sliced into midnight blue. "Or they are planning something," he mused lightly. Cerulean eyes turned abruptly to stare at Super Sailor Polaris. "What is the worst thing you've experienced as a senshi?" It wasn't like Taranis to ask about the good times, but it was very like him to wonder about the bad. He had asked Sailor MuCephi the same thing when they first met. She'd told him about the sailor who was lost to them.

Could that be him one day? Would he become the story that Magellan told?

It was a sobering thought.

((Assuming this is pre doom tree since the ending on that is still in limbo XD))

-She was oblivious to the connection the two had. Absolutely oblivious to the fact that right here before her, the one she was trying to sway to her side, was the same person whose company she'd never wish upon herself or any others. So tainted with judgement and distaste that she would have found it hard to give him a second chance at all. Funny coincidence that.

A soft mmmm rolled off her lips as his suggestion sounded her lips turning downward minutely at the thought. Her eyes filtered back down to him at his question, shifting uncomfortable between her boots. It was an easy question, one that hadn't even taken a second to ponder.

She could still see it sometimes in her dreams.. could feel a dull ache in the arm that had been yanked out of it's socket. Could feel the cold death spreading through her chest. She even still taste Mili's lips on her own. Dirty little secret that.

One hand had made it's way up from her waist, coming to settle on her brooch. She didn't lie, which was something to say.. considering her usual ego.- "I almost had my starseed taken once.."

"My power backfired. I was completely defenseless. His hand was in my chest.."

"If it weren't for another senshi happening by in time..." -She trailed.-

Sailor Taranis listened quietly, expression impassive. "Your power backfired and pulled your starseed? But you manipulate metal. How could that happen?" Again, he revealed more of his knowledge about the senshi with the translucent fuku. It might unnerve Polaris now, but it was better this way. If Taranis was in his normal mind set, he might hold it over her head, or otherwise use it to maliciously manipulate her.

Tonight under the cloudless sky, he did not feel vindictive.

He sighed, long and listless. It was a natural thing for him to do. He was always full of sighs. "When I was just a civilian, I had a Nega reach into my chest. Sailor Magellan saved me. She saved me from a lot." Now he was thinking of Dani? Sailor Taranis clearly needed a break. Maybe a vacation. He was vomiting introspection at one of his least favorite people without hesitation.

"No no." -She corrected. Quickly and decisively, though without the growl he might have received had she known his secret. It was simply matter of fact, like a mother swiftly but not unkindly correcting their child.- "As I was casting my attack the Lt just so happened to be throwing his. His chain wrapped around my wrist and so the chain and myself were pulled back towards him."

-It had been traumatizing really when it was happening. Fairly early on, the first real consequence she'd met other than a few brusies, aches, and cuts. Struggling against something she knew was stronger then she was, being drawn ever close to danger by her own folly. It was terrifying and it only added insult to injury that she'd become something of a shield as well for the enemy, taking hits to the back and legs that had been destined for him. The unhappy frown that had stretched across her face as she pulled forth the memories softened a little as he shared his similar experience, her hand reached in an attempt to touch his shoulder in a show of comfort. Of compatriots.

She didn't comment however, other then a simple.- "I've fought beside her once"

-Polaris was silent again for a long moment, dwelling on his question and answer. When she spoke again it was candid and soft.- "This whole job can be rough. We have to witness horrendous things... like slaughtered children and merciless violence. And at the same time there is a call from our superiors to spill just as much blood ourselves, to be just as merciless. It'd be so much easier to just be a kid again, for the biggest worry to be a research paper in english or something else similarly trival.."

"But there is no going back. When you have the power to do something for the world.. well then you've just have to do it."

"I know the drawback to my attack quite well." He held his palm up and flexed his fingers the same way he did when there was a spinning sand blast there. "Face full of sand. Eyes full of sand. Sand in your hair. Henshining down and finding sand between your toes still." Taranis laughed, mocking. There seemed to be other senshi who had more useful powers with less of a penchant for backfiring horribly. Given his lifetime of bad luck, Taranis was not surprised that lurking within him was a power that more often than not struck him and his enemies. Oh well.

When Polaris said she knew his girlfriend, Sailor Taranis raised his eyebrows. The simple fact that she knew Magellan made her seem less vile. It didn't make him like her, but it did soften her to him. "We're very close," he said, nothing more.

His eyes wandered back to the Destiny City skyline. It was dotted with lights. Across the metropolis, street lights changed -- yellow, red, green -- but no cars drove on the roads. It was a ghost town, an empty nest. People were being careful, exceptionally careful. It did not mean the occasional person did not still walk at night, people did, but there was a tension in the air when the sun set. It was like the city itself was waiting for the other shoe to drop.

DC and Taranis had this in common.

There were many things Taranis could have said to Polaris. Instead, he went with one of Parker's old tricks: "Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe." He smiled, wistful. Quoting things made him feel happy, even if it made others raise their eyebrows.

Getting to his feet, the Senshi of Sand stretched his arms over his head. It was late. He would be going back to Hillworth now, much to his chagrin. This conversation had been odd, certainly, the eye of a storm that had been all of his meetings with this girl until this point. Taranis was too tired to think about it, not that night.

He moved toward the edge of the roof. "I should go," he said, lifting one boot to the ladder. "This has been... odd." Gloved hands gripped the railing and he started to climb down. Moments before his head disappeared from view, he said, "Good night, Aurora."

By the time she looked over the ledge after him, Sailor Taranis was gone, disappearing down another alleyway.

-It felt nice to hear about someone else's folly.. well the innocent kind atleast not the kind that got anyone seriously hurt. So Polaris smiled a little as he laughed imagining the images as he spoke about them. His attack was probably different then she'd initially thought.

As he mentioned his close connections with Magellan, she thought back to the girl mildly. They hadn't hit it off very well, the other girl had been entirely bratty and pushy. Aurora had been too, but the other girl had started it AND been like two times worse. But it wasn't to say she'd refuse fighting with the other girl ever again. Not that she needed it now it would seem. He was her partner, perhaps unofficially, but that's what she took from the tones.. the words.

Her eyes narrowed quizically at the quote, but she nodded when it seemed to fit, preparing to say something else when he caught her off guard. Odd What... why? She hadn't done anything that strange...

And then he was excuses himself, she lifted her fingers in a wave, mouthing a soft goodbye.- "Goodnight Tar..." -WAIT! Aurora!? Her eyes widened, hurrying to the ladder, but as she peered down he was already gone, and she was left to contemplate just how entirely 'odd' the night had been.-
