Kataja was new to this whole 'being an adult' thing. The hardest part was always being alone, moreso than the need to constantly eat. She was always at least a little hungry, but snagging a rat or hare here and there always kept her content. It was just hunting alone, sleeping alone that was such a drag. Sure, it was a part of life, but she missed the warm bodies of siblings and parents, of not worrying that some creature was going to grab you in the middle of the night. She had never actually heard of anyone she knew getting stolen, but there were enough stories to keep her wary. Lions were a lot bigger than her, after all.
And a whole long stronger than one lone, quiet female hyena.
The sun had just fallen, and the darkness of night was enveloping the savanna. "What to do now," she mused, debating between a late snack or trying to find a decent place to rest.

Generally he tried to stay away from scavenging things from lions, given that they could easily make a meal out of him, but when they left half a carcass just laying around? He couldn't just pass that up. It was the earth providing for him and making sure that nothing went to waste.
He'd drug his meal away from where the lions had originally left it so he could enjoy the treat in peace. Not bothering about who or what else could be around he crunched into one of the softer bones. The soft squishy stuff on the inside always tasted good and he wanted at that first.

Kataja sniffed, the sudden smell of food made her stomach growl. here did that come from? Did the winds just want to tease her about how hungry she was? Probably, since they were already tricky little things, blowing one around and getting confused and...
Wow, she was hungry.
Kataja followed the scent, certain that it would lead to something delicious. She didn't think it would lead to another hyena, but at least it wasn't a lion. She probably would have high-tailed it and never looked back.
So instead, she peeked, looking starved. Would he share? Push her off? Attack her? Whatever, she was willing to risk anything for just a tiny bite.

He didn't notice her at first, happily chewing on his bones, but eventually the creeping sensation of being watched got to him. Licking his lips he looked up and smiled when he saw the green female.
"Are you hungry? There is plenty to eat, far more than i could ever manage myself, if you'd like some." His parents had always taught him to share with others. If someone came upon you while you were being blessed then they needed the same blessing also.

She didn't need a second invitation. Kataja jumped over, though she was trying to be polite in eating, and only took smaller bites. It wasn't fresh, and her tummy warned her that she shouldn't eat too much of this, but she didn't care. She could pay for it later if her body wanted to protest so much. She was eating, and couldn't be happier.
Picking through some of the parts, she could feel her stomach relaxing. See? Everything was ok.
"I was starving," she replied, her tail twitched behind her in joy. "Thank you so much!" She licked her maw, making sure nothing was going to drip and embarrass her, especially something like drool. Only...more wild hyenas did that, or so she assumed.

"When the savanna is giving so those who are partaking should be also." He nodded slightly. He was used to being made fun of for the way he spoke and thought so whatever her reaction was he was prepaid for it.
"The lions did not leave it long ago but they seemed done with the meal and it shouldn't go to waste."

She tilted her head, her stomach quickly filled (as it always was), absorbing his words. He spoke strangely, and though it didn't bother her, she still needed a moment to decipher his words.
"That's true," she replied. "Which means...perhaps next time I should leave something for someone who gets as hungry as me..." It was annoying, having a slightly-smaller stomache, and getting hungry pretty often. She felt like she had to graze like the beasts she wished she could take down by herself.

He nodded with a smile. "As long as there is enough to go around." If he'd had a meal that would only fill himself he would have had a difficult choice to make, since she'd looked so hungry, but there was plenty to share this time. "And often the lions leave things laying around just to go to waste. Sad but true."
He'd never been good at hunting anyway so scavenging off others meals was a better use of his time. He didn't have to waste so much energy on trying to kill something when there were plenty of things already dead. "Lion germs aren't that bad if you catch them early"

She had begun to groom herself a little, if only so she wouldn't look like a complete mess. His comment about lion germs brought her attention back to him, and he ear twitched as she stared at him.
"Germ?" she asked, feeling herself almost panic. "What does that stuff do? It doesn't like....turn you into one, right?" S he'd rather become a flea than a lion! Though...perhaps...it was less, since if lions left their meals out everywhere...unless it was a way to just make more lions!
Kataja was getting a little too ahead of herself. She schooled herself to stop freaking out and listen to this hyena that most likely had more experience than her.

"I've eaten their leftovers a lot and i've never turned into one." He looked down at his paws for a moment before crunching another piece of bone off to chew. Once he'd swallowed the bite he shrugged slightly.
"I'm not quite sure what they are. My parents and siblings used to say things like that and i've never really thought about it. I suppose they can't be that bad since they've never hurt me, whatever they are"

Kataja fretted a little, but as he didn't really have a reason, she had to let it drop. Besides...if he had eaten like this a lot, then she wasn't going to just suddenly become a lion, anyway.
Whew.
"Okay, good," she sighed. "I really don't want to be a lion, I like being a hyena." If a little quiet, lonely one. Better than a stinky big lion!
"Do you find their meals a lot? Do you have tips?" She perked up. "I'm not very good at hunting, or even scavenging."

"Being something different might be fun. Though i think i'd like to finish living out this life before i try something else." He grinned slightly before shifting so he could sit up properly.
At her questions he nodded. "I do. I often follow them when they are hunting." HE found it so much easier than trying to hunt for himself. He wasn't good and it was too much trouble. "So long as you dont steal from them while they are eating they generally dont hurt you"

Her eyes widened at his 'something different' comment, but she kept her mouth shut. He did finish his through in the next breathe, and it was enough to satisfy her. She was quite happy as a hyena, though a cheetah might be neat. Running so fast...
"Really? I'm...not scared of lions, but I'd rather not look at them." Still. "I guess if it meant eating, though, it'd be something to get over really fast."
Her tail twitched, remembering her manners. Sort of. "I'm Kataja," she smiled.

"Why dont' you want to look at them?" He tipped his head as he looked at her. That was an odd thought to him. Not looking at something? Everything had a place and a reason so he figured it all should be appericiated.
"Kataja .... I'm Bakunja. I think i've heard others say in this situation that it's a pleasure?"

"I just..." she tried to think of a way to explain it, but nothing really seemed to make any sense to her. Was it because she didn't like them? Did she fear them? Or perhaps she just loathed them more than she thought.
"I don't know," was her honest, quiet reply. "Something about them unsettles me, though I have never quite been able to figure out why. They have never done anything to anyone I know personally. I just feel so strange when they're around, almost like it's how I should be. Though, even that feels weird."
Wow, uh, ok. She laughed, "I think I got myself confused, there."
