No. This joyful daydream wouldn't come true. A year on the hunt and he hadn't found anything. Maybe he wasn't ready for the mission. Perhaps there was more he still had to learn. But what had he been missing?
During the spring and summer, he stayed near the river. He saw the salmon jump upstream in the fall. He checked nearby caves during the winter. Nothing. No tooth, claw, or hair of a bear. What had he been missing?
And so he was returning home. Returning to tell of his failure. But this was a learning experience, not a complete failure.
He picked his head up slowly, his tail raising as realization dawned on him. A learning experience. Did King Arthur return home in a sour mood after his adventures looking for the Holy Grail? No. And neither would Royce Garnet return home in down spirits.
