Once again the young foal was off on her own adventures, this time investigating a creek. The sandy shore left impressions of her hooves as she jumped from side to side. She neighed excitedly as the cold water splashed her legs. Winter hopped from rock to rock down the creek, following the flow. She was too wrapped up to notice the large sitting pool that she was heading towards. The jumping stones had become a game until they suddenly ended and her momentum threw her forward into the pond. It was so sudden she didn't even manage a yell before a loud splash could be heard echoing off the forest trees that lined the creek.
She was thoroughly soaked and her blue face began to turn a light shade of purple as she blushed. Winter whipped her head around to see if anyone had witnessed her fiasco. Seeing no one she sighed and just sat in the cool water. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing that she had fallen, a cool dip was perfect on this warm day.

Where did the fairies roam? Lorcan begged his dad to tell if he ever knew any fairies or any other peculiar creature. If he did, Lorcan wanted to know where they lived and how to go about meeting them. But his dad thought Lorcan strange, telling him often he had too much of an overactive imagination. But Lorcan was positive they existed, not only in stories but actually real as well. This morning he had snuck away from his parents and siblings. A hard thing to do considering how large his family was! Lorcan wanted to do something, anything. No one was talking to him, not even his imaginary friends, as his parents might say. But this butterfly talked to him. Oh he always knew butterflies could talk even though his dad might say otherwise. It told him of a very nice creek, a fish of the most prettiest colours was said to live there. Lorcan wanted to see it. So here he went. Reaching the stream he saw a foal hopping from rock to rock. And then she slipped and fell in. He blinked. Was this what his dad might say? A figment of his imagination? No way! Lorcan was sure she was real. And she truly seemed to be as she bobbed in the creek, completely soaked. He ran over to the creek's edge. "Golly, you all right?" He asked. He dipped a hoof into the creek. "Ooh that feels just right for a day like today."

"Oh!" Winter cried in surprise. She could have sworn she was alone. The blue filly flopped over in the water, submerging herself again. When she came up for air, her bangs hung down over her eyes dripping wet. She blushed, more embarrassed this time. But she finally managed to speak to the newcomer, "Umm...yes I'm alright."
She stood to introduce herself. "I'm Winter. Who are you?" A quick shake and the loose water fell from her body. Winter smiled at the foal, quickly forgetting her awkward mishap. It looked as though she would have a playmate today - a rare occasion indeed for the young one.

He watched her curiously. She seemed to like the water a lot. Lorcan thought water was okay but he didn't swim in it often. But he supposed he might have to today, if he wanted to find that spectacular fish the butterfly told him about earliar. "I'm glad you're all right. I wasn't sure if I should jump in but I'm not the best swimmer."
"You mean like the season? Wow, that's so cool!" Lorcan gushed, grinning. "My name's Lorcan, not as special as your name is, but it's still pretty cool." He nodded.
He continued to look at her, wondering something. "Are you part fish?" He blurted out. Lorcan reasoned that it could be why she liked the water so much, even if she looked just like his sisters. And if she was, maybe she heard about that fish.

Winter laughed, she was proud of her name. "Thanks. I like your name too, Lorcan. I haven't heard of it before." But to be truthful, the young filly hadn't encountered many other soquili before either.
She widened her two-colored eyes at his sudden question. She cocked her head towards her rump, "Nope. Just a normal soquili." With a kick of her back legs for emphasis, she turned back to him with an even broader smile. "But wouldn't that be cool? Do you want to pretend to be fish?"
Winter remembered what the colt had said earlier about not being the best swimmer. "Oh but we can stick to the shallow water over here."

He grinned. "Really? Well actually me too! I know no one but me who has my name." He never thought about it before but thinking about it now, Lorcan was rather proud of his name. When he saw her eyes widening, he finally noticed the two eye colours she had. "Whoa. How come you got two eye colours?" He questioned, very curious by it since he never saw someone have two eye colours before. Both his parents, all his siblings and even Lorcan had one eye colour only.
"Oh." But that was okay if she was a regular soquili, just like him. "No, I've never acted like a fish before. I don't know how." Lorcan admitted. "I don't really see fish where I live." Sometimes one would pass by him when he had a bath but that was rare.
"I'll come in then." He jumped in, the water splashed at him. "A butterfly told me about this really awesome fish that lives in this creek. It looks like a rainbow!" Lorcan told Winter excitedly. "That's why I was wondering if you were part fish, if you knew anything about it."

She blinked at the question, never having thought about it before. "I don't know. My daddy has blue eyes and my mom has red...so I guess I take after both of them." She smiled at her answer, it worked well enough for her.
She started to wade into the shallow water until her knees were under the water line. "Hmm I'm not sure either. This is my first time at this creek. I saw a few smaller fish earlier swimming..." Her voice drifted off as she studied the still water pond.
Winter jumped when Lorcan did. She was surprised by the sudden splash. She was intrigued by his story of a butterfly and rainbow fish. "Wow! Butterflies don't talk to me! You're so lucky! Well that's that then! We should look for the rainbow fish."
The filly gazed about the creek looking for any potential hiding spots for this mysterious fish. She spotted some plants draping over the edge of the body of water. It was directly across from them but it wasn't close enough to the shore and Winter couldn't easily gauge how deep the water truly was. For now she just ignored the area. "Where should we look first?"

"My eyes are like my mom's, but darker. Well I think so, anyway. Dad's are gray." Lorcan thought about it, he was sure he was right about that. "None of us got eyes like dad, we all have brown, but they're all different brown's." Lorcan explained further. Cadmium's were the darkest, then his, Bambi's, and Aster's were the lightest. "I'm the odd one in my family, I don't look like any of my parents." Lorcan smiled. "I guess I'm extra special!" He gushed happily, being unique was cool.
He went closer to Winter, but making sure he didn't go in too far. "Oh." Lorcan was disappointed by that. He was hoping she came here often. "My dad doesn't think butterflies talk. He says I have too much of an overactive imagination." Lorcan recited, talking as much as he could in a monotone to try and imitate his father. He laughed. "I can't do his voice at all!" But he tried.
"Really?" Lorcan's eyes widened. "You really want to look with me?" Lorcan grinned huge. "No one's ever wanted to go on an adventure with me." He waded in further until the water hit the tops of his legs.
"I think I'll duck my head under, I do it all the time during bath time." Lorcan was okay with that, he just didn't like it when he couldn't touch the ground, then he freaked out. "Maybe here first and then we could look around the creek." But what if it was in the middle of the creek? Lorcan was sure it was deepest there.

Winter tilted her head at Lorcan's impression of his father. She laughed, "Well he's just silly then. If you really stop and listen then he would know."
She took his lead and began searching the shallow water. "Oh!" The foal had never thought to put her head under the water like he had. So she tried it, first with her eyes closed. Winter tried again, dunking her head and keeping her eyes open. She saw something glint under a plant that overflowed into the creek pond. She quickly followed, her movements stirring up muck and mud - as well as chasing out some small minnows from under the same plant she had seen the glint from.
Winter came up for a gulp of air, "Hmm..." She was a little disappointed but she wasn't ready to give up. There was two of them so surely they could find this rainbow fish. She called over to Lorcan to let him know what she had found. "Nothing here, just some small silver fish."

Lorcan did agree with her. He could never understand why his father was so practical. Lorcan wanted him to believe in things that others might not but so far no luck. But Lorcan was positive butterflies could talk, he knew he wasn't playing a make believe game, as others might think. Or was he?
Lorcan shook his head, no he was right. He was sure of it. "Yeah you're right." He grinned at her. Lorcan was glad that she believed him about the butterflies.
He continued to look around, looking underneath some rocks and some water plants. But he found nothing but small fish that swam away when he disturbed their home. Hearing his name, he waded over to Winter. "You found it?!?" He questioned excitedly.
Hearing what she did find, Lorcan was a little disappointed. "Oh." He paused but then smiled. "Well silver's cool. Maybe we're supposed to find a gold fish next and then the rainbow fish will come." He suggested.

Winter laughed at his theory, but then an idea struck. "Maybe we should look for a gold fish! If we're not looking for the rainbow one then he might accidentally find him!" The logic made perfect sense to her foal mind.
She jumped in the water from excitement at her revelation. It caused more dirt and muck to stir up, making small fish dart out. Winter stopped and watched the school of fish frantically swim for cover. It seemed she was finding more fish by being loud and boisterous rather than quietly searching. "Oh!"
She jumped some more, heading into the deeper parts of the pond. Bigger fish zipped out of their hiding places, some were more white then silver. "I think I'm getting closer to finding it!" The young foal pounced in the water more.

Lorcan nodded enthusiastically. Winter was thinking along the same lines as Lorcan was. If they could find this gold fish, maybe the rainbow fish would appear? Oh, Lorcan certainly hoped so.
Winter was already searching so Lorcan thought it best that he start searching as well. He hurriedly rushed through the water, making waves as he did so. Water splashed in his face and he spluttered. Lorcan shook his head, to try and get the water off of it.
Lorcan decided to head in the opposite direction, away from where Winter was searching. Lorcan figured that they could cover more of the creek faster if they searched this way. Lorcan poked at some water plants, watching eagerly as some fish passed by. Nope, no gold fish yet.
Lorcan moved on to other areas of the creek, wading through the water. He took a peek at Winter and noticed her going into the deeper parts of the creek. Lorcan still walked along the edge of the creek, and that's when he spotted the rocks. "Ooh." They looked steady, Lorcan could easily jump from the grass to rock, to rock. Lorcan climbed out of the creek.
"Hey, Winter." He called out to her. "I'm going to see if the gold fish is near the very middle rock." Lorcan looked at the third rock, there were five in total. Could he do this? He jumped towards the first rock, slipped off and fell back into the water. "Oww...." He winced.

Winter concentrated on her small area as she heard of Lorcan's plans. She nodded without looking up, afraid if her eyes left the water then they would forever miss the gold fish or worse, the rainbow fish. It wasn't until she heard a splash and her friend's 'Oww', that she turned to look. He had fallen back into the water and was wincing in pain. She rushed to him ready to assist.
"Are you alright?!" She scanned his body for scrapes and bruises. "Where does it hurt? Do you need help up?" Even Winter realized her barrage of questions might be too much for Lorcan, but concern filled her thoughts.
