Aveve wondered in a huff through a dark forest, the sun had set hours ago but the moon wasn't visible behind thick clouds.

Well honed muscles rippling under a dappled leathery coat, the kalona with the splash of kirin traveled on and despite her raging her hooves ghosted almost silently over the forest floor. She wasn't terribly tall like her father had been, maybe a little above average height for her breed <******** Enyalius, taking her guppy away. True Typhoid had been Enya's long before her .. but she'd laid claim to him when Enya had left! She flicked her tail back and forth rapidly as her lips curled up in a snarl over pearly fangs. "Jackass," Aveve pawed the ground with a cloven hoof and took the opportunity to study her surroundings since she'd been so distracted before by Enya's betrayal she had no clue where she wondered.

She looked around slowly eyes drinking in every detail. Even within her family she had strange eyes, but the fact only brought her great pride. As a foal her eyes had been absolutely pupil-less like father and siblings, but it seemed the fates had more of a plan for her for as she grew the pupils reemerged as bright rings in the expanse of glowing red. If the silly saying was true, and the eyes were the window to the soul she had a soul dark and twisted as any.

She tossed her wild brown mane and froze, every muscle locking up as a breeze drifted past her. Someone had been this way, and recently.

A twisted grin stretched across the leathery muzzle, maybe today wouldn't be so bad! With a little buck and a giggle she trotted in the direction the scent had come from.

Xibalba trotted through the thick woods that had always been home to him with a practiced ease. Where many might slow to a crawl picking their way through the dense, brambled woods, Xibalba almost danced through the woods, an odd, off tune on his lips.

Some days, Xibalba wandered further from 'home' than others, trying to find new ground to explore, new treasures to find. But he never went more than a few days away from his home. For home was where he kept his things - everything from shiny beetles he had found as a foal that were long dead, to shiny bits of rocks or jewelry or bone. Unassuming things perhaps, but priceless to Xibalba. Some he had collected with his Aunt Psyche - who was more like a sister to the twisted soquili than any kind of authority figure. But since his 'Christening' by his true mother, Xibalba had parted ways with the majority of his sanity, with little regret.

He bore the skull on his face like a mask - and claimed it was more his real face than what lay beneath it any way. IT was a gift, an identity imparted on him by Brigitte the mad.

OUt of the corner of his amber eye, a flash caught his attention, and he trotted over, the miasmic energy about his forehooves swilrling along with his excitement.

There, half covered in muck and grime was a shining piece of metal. With a wild grin, he went to paw at it with is hoof, determined to unearth it and see what it might be in its entirety.

He was oblivious, for the moment, that there was another around.

Aveve was none to worried about the brambles and briars herself as she pranced along through the thick underbrush in search of whoever she had scented. True they scratched against her leathery hide and it was a little uncomfortable but her skin as thick enough it didn't allow for any of them to get deep enough to cause bleeding, so why should she really care?

She froze again when she heard a strange noise, the mare cocked her head to the side ears flicking back and forth as she listened to the sound of something striking metal, a hoof maybe?

She frowned, glowing eyes narrowed and wondered forward slowly now, her hooves barely making a sound as the ghosted her through the thorns. The forest seemed to be filling up with a little more light, the other must be in a small clearing then.

She stopped far enough back in the shadows she couldn't be seen by him but close enough she could see the other.

As her eyes slid over him she blinked briefly, what an interesting creature. The rainbow scales and skulls set into a deep chocolaty coat, the bone covered head, what looked like rainbow fire swirling around his hooves and flaring from his nostrils occasionally when he snorted.

But almost more than all else, she was drawn to the bright amber eyes, no they weren't strange or different like hers, but they had a draw to them.

She finally yanked her eyes away to watch him paw at the metal half buried in the dirt. She cocked her head and giggled softly before moving out of the shadows finally.

"What are you doing?" Aveve giggled crazily as she slithered out of the shadows and towards the larger stallion. She let him have some space but she also stood close enough she could see the gleaming metal in the dark earth.

Xibalba turned quickly at the voice, his eyes wide in the skull that fit over his face. His nostrils flared, iridescent smoke pouring from them with every snort.

For them moment, the bit of metal was forgotten at the intruder. For a moment, he was quiet, his eyes roaming over the mare that stood before him - with thick, leathery hide and a crimson bramble wound about her neck. He cocked his head dramatically to the side as he considered her presence, eyes squinting at the red runes that were etched over her flanks.

There was something almost familiar to the mare, but Xibalba shook his head. He certainly would have remembered her before. Those leathery wings and bright bloodshot eyes.

"What I be doing is non'ya business." Xibalba responded cryptically, giving her a sidelong glance, his eyes tracing over her neckwrap again, the leathery wings in consideration.

"But what you be doing here... now that is my business. Why have you come here, mare? What have you come to seek? To ask...? To give to Xibalba?" He grinned wickedly and took a skip-step towards her, his large frame moving with almost a foal-like energy as his tail lashed behind him. It seemed that when Xibalba was in the presence of others, particularly strangers, that his thoughts seemed less his own and more the miasmic energy or spirits that he allowed to guide him. But he did not fight it, did not complain. His fate was to play a role in this world. To do the bidding of the spirits.

Aveve watched him quietly ear flicking forward at his voice only to shift back once more to listen to the noises behind.

She rocked on her hooves almost swaying like a serpent to his movements and wicked grin quirking at the corner of her mouth. "I came to seek out the source of the noises I heard, I cam to ask what you were digging up ..." she took a pause at the last question and almost mimicked the c**k of his head. Her eyes locked onto his again for a moment as she continued to consider, what had she to give? Most of her family had something special, the thorns had passed down far in her family but not the special roses of her great grandmother, those had stopped with her father, he had only received the thorns. She only had one thing to give if he wanted something.

She rocked and swayed more then just as suddenly froze up, her head rising high. She considered the words clawing to come out carefully, rejection was a reality, though she doubted any would reject it.

Her head dropped down once more tail curling back and forth, a smile quirked at her lips again and her ears pricked towards him.

"All I have to offer to you Xibalba ... is myself and my loyalties."

Of course she had considered the implications of this, he wasn't a kalona or at least not a full kalona. But he was strong, this much she could feel. If he so pleased she could bear many fine foals for him. Her tail lashed again, consequences be damned, she wanted what she wanted and if she could snag this stallion's side for herself then that would be what she would do.

"NOISES!" Xibalba echoed, much louder. "Noises! The noises you be hearin' - not 'noises' - but the songs of these woods. The clink of metal, the thud of a hoofbeat! The rapport of the wood on trees on soil!" The words made little sense, but the gravity in which Xibalba delivered them seemed as if he were speaking pure prayer to the mare.

"You just don' know how to listen, mare." He chuckled, moving towards her as the energy ebbed and flowed around him.

But at her response, he paused. Not in surprise, no. IF anything, he seemed to carry some expectation of praise or worship. But in... consideration. He eyed the crimson vines wrapped tightly around her throat, the ivory horns piercing the top of her skull... and then the leathery wings moving on her sides. There were a couple of soquili in his family herd that had wings. Xibalba had wondered at the experience of flight. With a wild grin and a toss of his head to the side. "Loyalty, that be good. But what about those fine wings you have? Xibalba could take those. Fly like the birds! Hear the spirits of the sky, follow the dead to the realm beyond!" In the years that had passed, the longer he had worn this mask and followed in Brigitte's hoofprints, the further and further behind he had left his sanity. It had distanced him from Psyche, though she still longed to spend more time with her 'cousin'.

He shook his head. "But what have you come for, Mare? For knowledge? Have you a question to ask? What be it that you trade your loyalty for? Or do you merely come to give an offering?" His voice rumbled deep, coarse, like claws rubbing up her spine, rubbing her fur the wrong way.

She cocked her head as if trying to hear the noises he spoke of, and her psychotic giggle echoed in her throat. He was surely an interesting creature, beautiful in all his maniacal ravings. He stepped forward, and she held her ground, her lips quirking again.

She raised an eyebrow, he wanted wings, her wings? Well of course he couldn't have those, but if he wanted wings "... I am quiet attached to my wings m'lord ... but if you want wings, I will get them for you." She purred low in her throat a grin spreading wide across her fangs, Enya had taught her a thing or two .. oh how she loved the idea of torturing and ripping an unworthy creature's wings from them. It would be delightful! Her loud cackle suddenly filled the air and her wings flapped, it would be glorious! The blood pooling on the ground as she so expertly shredded the right muscles ... oh so glorious.

Her wings stretched out at her sides again, her blood still boiled at the idea of getting him his wings, oh please let him say he wanted wings. Her tongue darted out to run across her fangs and lips, oh how much she could enjoy that request if only he'd ask it over her.

His voice broke her from her daydreaming and a shudder ran down her spine, but it wasn't one purely from the grating sound, no she enjoyed the sound of his voice just as much. "Knowledge is nice, but truly I'd give it all to remain near you ... you are an enigma ... a glorious creature. There is so much weakness in these foul lands, so many unworthy of our attention." She stepped towards him now, drawing herself up slightly, eyes wild.

He looked her over as she spoke. And without asking permission, he tested her wings, inspected them with a gumming as she spoke of them. Leathery, salty. "Attached. Ah. Attached." He repeated with an obvious mote of disappointment. "I could un'attach 'dem for you if you want. But... maybe dat not be what in store for you. You can bring Xibalba wings? That would be good. Yes. A fitting offer!" His heavy tail swished amidst the leaves.

He cocked his head as he looked her over. "And you want to be near me? You want to be added to me collection?" His lips parted revealing a wide smile. "You come to seek answers! To learn! To ask questions of the spirits. I hear dem, But that not be coming free, you know. You be mine now, mare. Fetch me my wings, and come and listen, I tell you what they have in store for you!"

Engel let her eyes drift closed and just listened to him for a moment, even when he gummed her wings she never flinched, instead flexing one out to allow him easier access to chew. There was no need for her to worry, even if he tried to harm them her wings would heal anyway.

Her eyes drifted lazily open and she watched him again, how strange had any other stallion claimed possession of her she would have personally removed his stallion-hood. Yet, this seemed to right, how strange how very very strange.

She rocked back on her hocks as he made his demands; he wanted wings and she would get him a perfect set, she dipped down into a bow briefly "your wish is my command m'lord." She rose once more and lept forward, one then two powerful flaps of her wings and she was in the air.

She stayed low, her eyes scanning the earth for the perfect set. Not any pair would do, they had to be perfect.

By stroke of luck she found him, a young kalona stallion. His coat color was almost a perfect match for Xibalba's. The tips of the feathers and leather of his wings were a shimmering gold color.

She hissed softly, he was parading around a group of lesser mares, strutting like a turkey in heat.

Such weakness had to be eradicated.

Her work took little time, as soon as she'd landed the mares scattered and the stallion never knew what hit him.

She stood looking down at the bleeding broken body as she held the wings gingerly in her mouth. She would have savored her work longer, but master was waiting! With a giggle she was off again her flight back to the clearing where she'd left Xibalba quicker than her flight out.

She landed gracefully, and wondered towards him dipping low in a bow again she laid the wings at his hooves. "I brought your wings m'lord," this time she stayed down, waiting for him to address her before she rose again.

"Ha! Good! Good good!" Xibalba laughed as she agreed to his demand. She was obedient, reverent, as it should be. The spirits that whispered to him, that he could feel about him seemed pleased.

An offering of the kind that she promised was quite suitable to earn the favor of these spirits, and Xibalba himself. They understood the currency of flesh and blood. It gave them strength and allowed their voices to speak stronger in his ears.
Xibalba didn't know how he knew the things he did - he certainly never questioned it. But he credited it to his birth-mother. While she seemed mad to his other herd mates, he knew the gift she had given him.

He was not bored as Aveve was gone. He meandered, following the path that was set before him. If she would bring an offering, it would need to be done properly.

When Aveve had completed her task, and came back to find the stallion with her gifts - she found him a small ways away, near the base of the mountains.

There were large rocks here, and a rushing river that careened down the slope of the mountain before winding its way between the trees of the forest from which he came. This was the place. This was proper.

"COME!" HE called to her joyously as she came from the skies. "Come Aveve! wing-Angel, Blood bringer - with your offering of flesh and flight!"

He reared, bringing his hooves down hard on a large flat stone, sending a loud reverberation echoing between the trees and mountain.

When she arrived, bowing before him and with her offering, Xibalba took the wings from before her, laying them reverently on the same large stone.

"SPIRITS!" He called out loudly. "Hear Xibalba - come! See this offering dat this mare has brought us!" He stood over the wings, the miasmic energy around his hooves swirling around and over the wings, caressing them. The golden hues on the wings reflected the rainbows, glimmering in the light.

"The gift of flesh - the gift of skin - the gift of blood and flight!
SPIRITS! Bond this gift, guide this mare - give her the boon that she do deserve!"

Finally, he stamped his hooves again, hard, on either side of the wings and then, carefully, lifted them out of the energy. Perhaps it was just the reflecting light off of them, but they seemed to have a strange cast to them.

He bent down again, and pulled at the sinews at the base of the wings, the ligaments and tough fibres in the 'arms' of them, pullin them together, tying them, until the wings were connected at the base. Then, with a wild grin, he lay them over his own back.

She rose slowly, her mane dancing about her neck. Wings flexing at her sides she stood calm eyes never leaving her master performing the ritual upon the huge boulder. There was a slight swell of pride in her chest that he'd approved of the wings she'd brought to him.

Her tail flexed and curled behind her shattering the otherwise immobile calm exterior.

Her winds snapped out, folded in, and snapped out again as if caught up themselves in the ritual being performed.

Aveve didn't know what came over her when she started to sway, letting out a soft song that started out first low in her gut then slowly rising in intensity and pitch with the climax of the ritual. The angelic voice, seemed to weave in with his accenting his darker tones.

She rocked back on her haunches bringing her fore hooves off the ground and stayed there for a moment. Her powerful legs holding her in the position.

She continued her song for him, the melody came almost naturally to her. She had no clue from where it had sprung, but she didn't care either she just continued to sing her voice rising and falling with Xibalba's voice and the ritual he performed above her.
PostPosted: Sat Nov 06, 2010 9:41 pm

But just when the ritual seemed complete, Xibalba did not stop. There was a dry bit of moss and twisted sinews still against the rock where the torn wings had lay. He withdrew the long shard of metal that he had discovered previously and dropped it beside the messy offering remains on the stone. One more stamp of his hoof... Two... three... and there was a spark where the metal scraped against the dark stone.

The moss cought, and a thick cloud of cloying smoke filled his nose, spreading quickly to Aveve as well.

He smiled wildly, breathing deeply in the cloud of smoke, exhaling his own miasma of color.

He listened to Aveve's trilling voice. "The spirits... they sing through you, 'Veve!"

He lolled his head back and forth, swaying to the music, letting his mind soar. "Let dem ride you. They thank you for dis offering." Xibalba closed his eyes, the world swam in time to the music and thick smoke... and he was flying...

in his mind at least...

As his ritual seemed to reach it's climax Aveve's voice rose, trilling higher and higher almost to the point of breaking before it sudden dropped back down a few octaves rumbling almost like a far off storm.

She didn't mind the thick smoke that curled in her nostrils, she swayed more and continued to sing, her voice just as much as the wings had been an offering to her master and the spirits that lead them both. She reared up again, this time standing nearly straight on her hind legs, her wings giving powerful flaps as if they were lifting her into the sky.

When her song finally ended she seemed to land form her own grounded flight, and slowly dropped down to her knees before Xibalba again, her nostrils were flaring and red as she attempted to catch her breath. Her wings were stretched out wide beside her, and the runes rippling across her sides seemed to glow brighter agaisnt the steel gray hide.

Her breath slowly returned, but she stayed down still, awaiting her permission to rise once more.

Xibalba "Flew", letting his eyes roll and the energy swirl around him. He could "feel" the wind about him, the reeling, dizzying sensation of flight, and feel the spirits around him.

The spirits were pleased, and so was Xibalba.

Finally, he 'landed', the smoke clearing and Xibalba calming. He lay his radiant eyes on the mare, kneeling by him.

"The spirits are pleased, 'Veve." He finally spoke, breathily.

Note July 8, 2012: it's been some time since this RP has had movement - and the way it left seems like it could be a good wrap point, so I'll go ahead and consider it closed for the moment - but drop me a PM if you want to get it going again.
