How long had she been at this? It felt like hours. The air burned as she breathed it into her lungs, scratched at her throat on the way down. Her arms were weary and her legs felt like they would give out. Was she going to lose this battle from sheer exhaustion?
Alkaid grimaced as she stared up at the slightly-taller-than-human-average youma, leering over her in all his (its? did these things have genders?) enormous bulk. One of her hands was covering her arm, where a sweep of claws had drawn blood. She didn't think it was too deep, but it was certainly pouring enough blood to cause anyone alarm. She was hunched over slightly and backing away as the youma sized her up, probably gearing up for yet another charge.
Where she was worn down, it didn't seem at all concerned with the fact that she had spent her attacks and a good amount of her physical strength battering it. There wasn't even the faintest little sign that it had slowed down from the beginning - or maybe Alkaid was just too impaired herself to really notice such things. She was almost sure she had felt something break when she punched its chest, but she wasn't an expert on youma anatomy by any means - maybe they were just naturally crunchy.
Alkaid stifled a groan as she forced herself to stand and dropped her bloodied hand from where it was covering the small wound. She could feel bruises budding up along her arms and legs where she had taken hits already, but what was there to do? Saiph was still out of commission. Instead, she set herself into a slight crouch and steeled herself as the youma charged. At the last second, she leaped out of the way and to the side, aiming a punch right for the face (or what looked like his face, anyway) of the youma.
All that earned her was an aggravated growl and a sweep of the arms that she had to dodge as well. With her breathing heavy, Alkaid leaped backwards to poise herself some distance away atop a closed dumpster. The smell was wretched, but it was a temporary reprieve - that thing didn't seem that smart.

CLANKA-CLANK-CLANK was the sound echoing over and over in the deserted night as a tiny little ball of golden fluff topped with what looked like a fedora of royal purple ringed with white ribbon and stuffed with rainbow feathers flew as fast as it could along the street behind the youma.
It really wasn't the job of a guardian cat to patrol, but sometimes Derpraline was just in the right place at the right time. She had been successful recently in saving a few humans and turning them into awakened senshi and was quite enthused with her success. It was so glee-inducing that now the tiny kitten spent as much time as she could roaming the town at night to perhaps try and save a few more senshi, broaden their options even more. Astraea was incredibly pleased with the little cat, and upon being told about turning Polaris into a super senshi, had actually hugged her! It hadn't been a long hug, but for the aloof silver cat, it was quite a big deal for Derpraline.
When she'd seen the orange and cream senshi dripping blood from afar, she'd immediately done something so incredibly typical of Derp that really it would have surprised no one - she chased her. It wasn't easy to do, being that she was roughly the size of a volleyball. But somehow, in a burst of agility that would have shocked any of 'her' senshi, the tiny cowbelled kitten made it onto the dumpster next to the senshi. "Senshi ok?" Softly she mewled in distress and lightly rubbed against the girl's ankles reassuringly. Derp was there, everything would be ok! Unfortunately she was sometimes a bit of a liability.
"Senshi fight youma?"

Alkaid was thankful for the small reprieve - the dimwitted youma seemed to have lost track of her while it growled and stomped angrily around the spot she had previously been occupying.
She was watching it in silence, crouching down on the dumpster with one hand balancing herself up and her injured arm tucked slightly against her chest. In her mind she was wavering between the benefits of a surprise attack (it was much harder to hit this thing head on) or taking the time to recover when a little voice came out of nowhere.
"Huh?" was the immediate response as Alkaid glanced down at her feet, looking for the source of the voice. She wasn't completely surprised to find that it was a talking cat - she'd met both Chloe and Astraea at this point, and others had been in the background at the Senshi meeting. She was a little more surprised at the cat's demeanor, though. "I, uhm, I'm trying to? It's not.. going so well?" Her heavy breathing was making speaking a bit hard, but she tried her best. Sadly, holding a conversation and trying to be stealthy at the same time was a little hard.
Just as Alkaid finished speaking, she heard the youma roar in what she could only call triumph. Her head snapped up to see the hulking beast now stomping in their direction filled with renewed purpose instead of angrily flailing at empty space. With a small groan under her breath, Alkaid reached down, scooped up the tiniest guardian cat she had ever seen and dove off of the dumpster just in time to see two giant fists slam down onto the top of it. The sound rang out through the empty night air and Alkaid stumbled to an ungraceful stop, her free arm swinging out to help her regain her balance while the other held the tiny guardian cat against her.

Trying? They were supposed to win, not try! Derpraline had heard this from the scary teacher at Hillworth, while she was hiding in the grass there catching bugs. There was something about them all being pansies, which she asked Mags about, and Mags said that pansies were flowers. That made absolutely no sense, and so the kitten ignored this and went with the idea that was more 'go, fight, win'! Certainly Mags never lost. Or Derp had never heard about Mags losing! This was new for the kitten, and she was stumped.
Then she was flying through the air, squashed against the pretty striped senshi's chest, yowling in shock. It was very hard to keep her claws sheathed, but Derpraline happily controlled herself. There were two options. Try to run before it caught them again, or the beam. She'd used the beam before, on Taranis' youma. Astraea had told her all about it, and there was use. "Pretty senshi can run fast? If no, Derp can do it! Derp has her star!" It was something that she told herself every morning. Derpraline was a good Guardian, she was a pretty Guardian, she was a star! A very special star! Astraea's favorite star! The last was her favorite, and always made the kitten go into fits of purring for at least ten minutes. The thought even now had her purring lightly which was, naturally, inappropriate as hell.
Hopefully Alkaid didn't mind!

Alkaid watched the youma at a distance nervously, her heart pounding anew. What had she even been thinking when she decided to do this alone? Oh, right, she'd been thinking of all the people it could kill if she left it alone to rampage through the city. As she watched it beat its fists angrily into the top of the dumpster, all she could imagine was her body there instead of the steadily denting and cracking lid.
"I can run," she breathed out heavily, but her brows drew down into a furrowed v at the thought of it, "but I don't want to let this thing get away." She wasn't entirely sure what this tiny cat was babbling about - what kind of star was she talking about and what would a star do against a youma anyway? "What if it hurts someone or-" Alkaid groaned slightly as their conversation yet again drew the attention of the youma. The hulking creature paused where it stood, lifted its head as if it had just noticed them via its peripheral vision, and turned with a roar.
And was the cat purring? This was really not the time or situation for that.
With that odd thought stuck in her mind, Alkaid drew a deep breath and jumped up onto the fire escape of the closest building. With one hand it was hard to balance, meaning she had to scramble for a handhold as she landed on the first platform. It became especially difficult as the youma chased her and rattled the fire escape from the hanging ladder in frustration, but once she had her footing she braced her back against the brick wall behind her and hoped the whole structure didn't become dislodged from the angry beast below them.
What good was she doing if all she could manage was to make it chase its tail?
"Maybe I could use a little help, yes," she finally pleaded, feeling safe for the moment despite the angry battering and shaking the youma was subjecting the fire escape to below them. It didn't seem smart enough to climb yet and that was all that mattered. For now, it was a temporary way to barricade herself. She leaned forward a little to peer over the edge of the landing, frowning slightly as she did so and making sure she was holding the guardian cat close so she didn't fall.
"Derp, is it? I'm sorry for not being very good at this," she was apologizing because she was, yet again, ashamed of her inability to do these kinds of things alone. She was used to Saiph saving her by now, but it seemed like it was her fate to be saved by everyone in the moon court. She frowned slightly at both herself and a particularly rough series of battering from the youma below (was he trying to pull down the whole fire escape using the ladder?) and leaned back against the wall again to wait for the cat's grand plan.

A little help? Derp was little, and she knew a good way to help! As they got up higher above the street and bought a little more time, Derpraline considered her options. It took a few moments, but there were really only two. She could use her magical star and they could run away, but the senshi didn't want to run, which made the youngest guardian cat think better of her for it. Lots of senshi liked to run away, and Derp didn't mind that, but it was always notgood. But she couldn't use her star more than once, and that wouldn't help anything if she was very very tired, would it?
Instead, the fluffy little cat leapt out of Alkaid's arms still purring and when she landed, there were bare human feet on the grated metal and an exquisitely dressed little girl. Somewhere, a Victorian mother's heart was beating with joy for the girl's proper attire and pretty smile. "Pretty senshi, give me a hand?" There wasn't much time to do this the right way, so she simply reached and plucked it up, holding it between her own and closing her eyes. The star in the center of her forehead flared slowly, glowing brighter and brighter until something appeared in front of Alkaid - her henshin pen. It warped and changed before exploding into light and shooting into the senshi's body where it had come from.
"Say fast, Alkaid Star Power, make-up! Hurry!" Her bright and adoring eyes were full of faith and joy that this process always brought, and every inch of her was full of confidence in what was about to happen. Certainly now, the youma could be dusted? If it worked right...hopefully it worked right!

Khalla started as the tiny cat leapt out of her arms, her eyes widened and her hand reaching out as if she might try to catch her. Somewhere between Derp jumping and landing, however, she turned into a tiny little Victorian child and Alkaid was left half-grasping at her in a very awkward way. She pursed her lips together and was just about to pull her hand back when the little cat asked for it, then grabbed it when she took a half-second too long to offer it herself.
She had no idea what she was expecting, but before she knew it the star on the tiny cat-girl was glowing and her henshin pen had appeared without her summoning it. She just stared at the hovering pen as if it might bite her, furrowing her brows in confusion as it started to warp and change into something odd. Before she could ask what was happening it disappeared as quickly as it came, popping back into the void in which it was kept. She glanced down at the cat quickly as she began to speak, then blinked rapidly to try and clear all the confusion from her head so she could at least concentrate on the one thing the tiny catgirl was asking.
She glanced around her quickly, decided the that the fire escape was no place to do this, and then resigned herself as she realized that she had no other choice - that youma was still pounding away at the hanging ladder. "Okay," she nodded, then lifted her chin up defiantly and shouted out.
"Alkaid Star Power, make-up!" Again, she didn't know what to expect but somehow, she didn't think it was an upgrade. The familiar feeling of hovering and having all her will-power stripped away for some other-wordly transformation washed over her. After what looked like a one-woman disco light show, Alkaid was deposited gracefully back onto her feet next to Derp. She glanced down at herself with curious eyes, holding out her for inspection. "Was that an upgrade?" she said softly as she continued to flex her fingers.
Then her attention snapped back to the youma below her and she pursed her lips in irritation once more. "Guiding Light, Magnified!" The words bubbled to her lips when summoned and as she spoke them, two balls of light formed in her upraised hands. She aimed them at the youma below her and.. nothing. It had the same effect as her original, regular attack had, just doubled. The youma roared as it struck, causing him to strike out at the fire escape in blind fury. Only this time, Alkaid was sure she felt some of the bolts give way because the fire escape definitely lurched.
"Thanks for trying," she said softly, simply frowning a bit. The frown wasn't just because of the unsuccessful attack though. "I feel like I should be able to do something else, I just don't know what." Now wasn't exactly the time to think about it though. She glanced at the little Victorian girl that was still standing at her side and gave her a weak smile. "I don't suppose you have another plan?"

It was amazing the amount of energy that a guardian cat gave off when not in cat form. Taranis was several buildings away scraping a piece of gum from his boot with a piece of chipped concrete when the warm deluge of positive energy wafted his way. He liked to stay on rooftops when patrolling, and tonight wasn't any different. The night had been relatively quiet, making this energy explosion the most interesting thing so far.
Curious, Taranis hopped from roof to roof until he reached the one where he could read the energy signature. There were noises coming from the side of the building. The black iron ladder of the fire escape jutted up on to the roof, and Taranis made his way over there, laying a hand on the railing and peering over the age.
There were two people a few levels down. One was familiar: the omnipresent Derp, his own guardian cat. The other was not: a senshi with striped leggings and bright fuku. His hand vibrated furiously on the fire escape as something struck it. "Derp, what's going on down there?" he asked, shouting so she could hear. From that angle, Taranis could not see the youma.

When Alkaid had started to look expectantly to the tiny catgirl, all she could do was stare back and look just as expectant. Derpraline had used every trick up her sleeve and had nothing left, upgrading the senshi to a super had taken all her minimal guardian cat powers. Probably all she had left was what generally was referred to as 'flee', and even then it was not that great. So the two simply stood and looked at each other with a growing apprehension, until a familiar voice caused her to look up and squeal happily.
"Taraaaaaaanis! There is a very big big youma heeeere come helllp! I dunno what is wrong, I made the senshi a super senshi but still nothing! We triiiiiied!" Her voice was rising on an edge minorly hysterical, and her big blue eyes were welling with tears. Derpraline hated failure. Derpraline hated uncertainty. This was rapidly becoming a situation filled with both. "Help us, Taraaaaanis!" He'd listen right? He'd helped her last time! He had to help them now!

Alkaid had begun to wonder what the two of them were possibly going to do - other than have the most dangerous staring contest the world had ever seen, of course. Then, from above, a male voice rang out and Alkaid had to wince as the little cat next to her practically squealed in excitement. If Derp knew who it was it had to be a good thing, right?
She had resigned herself to letting Derp take care of the situation and explain it to this mystery person when, out of the blue, Derp started to cry. Was this really because she thought she had failed? "Oh, no, don't-" she started, but was quickly drowned out by the hysterical cries of the little cat. She couldn't help it though, even with the danger below her, she wanted to comfort the poor thing. "It's not your fault, I'm just.. more of a support Senshi okay? I'm not made to attack alone."
She frowned then and moved to the edge of the fire escape. Making sure her hands were securely grasping the railing, she leaned out a little so she could look up and try to see the stranger. She could see bits of.. someone through the railings, which she supposed was good enough. "I don't have an attack that will kill this thing, can you help please?" She was a lot less hysterical than Derpraline, but her voice still had an edge to it despite her attempts to control it. She just had to go with the assumption that if Derp knew this stranger, he was a Senshi - or at least someone that could save them before the youma pulled down the whole fire escape on top of them.

Oh, Derp. Sailor Taranis smiled. But it was the kind of smile that a person would give their grandmother after she presented them with an old fruitcake for Christmas the third year in a row, a smile that said: thanks, but you shouldn't have -- no, really. Derp had adopted him as her own, so to speak, and he seemed to run into her more than any other senshi (other than Magellan, of course).
From where he stood, he couldn't see the youma. "The fire escape doesn't feel stable," he said, giving it a gentle push. No way could he crawl down it. Across the roof, there was another fire escape. "Hold on." Taranis disappeared to the other side, scrambling down the other escape. He was on the far side of the building now, but at least he was on the same level as the youma.
Creeping around the side, he finally spotted the creature about twenty feet away. The distance was a bit farther than he preferred so he took the risk of running a few feet to close the distance. Winding up his hands, he said, "Taranis Sand Blast!" The sand ball formed on his fingers, just as the youma turned to face him.
s**t. It started to run, and Taranis launched the sand blast, hoping it would derail the thing for long enough to let him load up for another.
