Scientists tend to use fish as research subjects to study medicine, biology, physics, chemistry and what not.

A favored fish seems to be the inexpensive zebra danio. We've already discussed the subject of the fluorescent glowfish, but there are more interesting researches.

Post the examples you know of, and also, what do you think of the use of fish as gineapigs?

A pair of zebra danio larva that are but a few days old. Their mouth and nostrils are visible as holes and their eyes are the darker shaded area.
Apparently they can regenerate their fins and organs while still in this stage.

Zebra danio's are also being used in the research of Alzheimer cells.
The green/yellow nerves are the normal cells, while the Alzheimer genes are coloured red and blue (I assume the eye does not count though)

Here's an article on the topic: http://insciences.org/article.php?article_id=4273

Most research with fish are generally and relatively 'painless' if not harmless when it comes to them. At least that's what I've been told by the professor here at my university who works primarily with fish. biggrin he's a pretty chill guy. He says usually if it the gene doesn't work, the embryo in the egg usually dies, it's sad he says, he doesn't like it when his fish die, but then he says, its either that or the eggs get eaten as yummy snacks by other fish. He says generally if the gene works or not but the fishy comes out alright, he's happy because then he has new fish he can show off and play with. >.>

Your professor sounds like an awesome guy.
Must be amazing if you can make 'playing with fish' your fulltime job.

I once knew a marine biology student who got the tag seaturtles as a part of her intern. Lucky girl.

Anyway, if anyone else has nice tidbits on fish of scientific interest, please do post! biggrin

WAAAAH that first pic is extraordinarily creepy!!

i realized the other day that my spotted "zebra" danio only has one eye. it was sold to me with some other zebra danios. i wonder if it was a mutation.
