i finally got some driftwood in my tank and its been turing my water yellow, so naturally i want to redo my tank so it looks liek the bottom of a lake and want darker gravel. the problem is is that the type of gravel i hve only comes in the light color i already have. its a pretty fine gravel thats almost sand. i got it for my cories and their little wiskers.
what substrate could i use? would large gravel be ok or would it pinch their wiskers?
or should i suck it up and just just a darker background?

Why not make a combination? You can have the majority of gravel be large and dark with a few random 'sandpits' or 'rivers' for the corries. Here are a few ideas: ThreadImageImage

True, but check out the thread, they placed the sand in a separate cup. As long as there isn't too much level difference, and you take extra care during cleaning it should be ok I think.
I suspect that if sand does get into the gravel, it won't stay on top, and maybe you can pick the gravel out of the sand by removing the cup once in a while and sift it. Theoretically speaking of course ^^;
