Zhu Cao liked to make sure that everyone in the neighbourhood knew how much money they had. He also liked to make sure all his ‘political’ alliances remained intact. Thus the Zhu family was hosting a special dinner party for all of the more important people the head of the family knew. There was only one that MeiLin was nervous about and that was her once upon a time arranged husband, Long. With the coming of Song Tzue, the marriage had been called off and while her father had told her they hadn’t been all that bothered, she was still worried. Other than that, MeiLin was used to playing the good and very quiet daughter. This was role she had been trained for all her life.
Song Tzue hadn’t.
MeiLin paused in brushing her mother’s hair and looked across at Song Tzue. The pine child seemed somewhat annoyed. She had been dressed for the occasion and MeiLin was proud to see how beautiful the young girl looked now that she had been coaxed out of pants. Not that it meant Song Tzue would behave. But their father had demanded the lotus’ presence, since she was a ‘gift’ from the gods and she needed to prove she belonged in their family.
--
A little later MeiLin stood calmly in the main room with Song Tzue by her side. Ce hovered nearby, looking stiff and unhappy in his new clothes. Their mother was seated on her favourite chair, staring vaguely of into the distance while waiting for this silly dinner to begin.
“You will be on your best behaviour... every one of you.” Cao told them all sternly, as if they were all intending on embarrassing him that night.
MeiLin nodded and shifted slightly, bending carefully as not to budge her dark, coiled hair even an inch. She kissed Song Tzue on the cheek, aware that her daughter would much rather be doing something else. “Just be yourself dear. Don’t worry; everything will be fine.” Maybe she was reassuring herself for than the pine.
Er, they live in a big traditional sort of house. XD A servant will meet Long and that at the gate.

The Huangfu family was a rich and prosperous one, and adored showing that off and admiring the wealth of others in their neighborhood. After all, it was an ego-boost to see how much better they were doing than their neighbors in some respects, and how they needed to improve in others.
Their eldest son walked carefully, looking about as respectable as his father, in a simple outfit with his hair braided up. The whole family looked neat and stern, save for one member - a small girl with long brownish hair, a red dress, and a lotus mark under her eye.
Gui was happy as a clam - she was getting to go out with her father and his family! And they were meeting a girl! The lotus child had absolutely no idea that MeiLin had been intended to MARRY her father - just that they were supposed to know each other, and that MeiLin was young. However, she was very excited upon spotting Song and waved a bit.

The servant opened the door for their esteemed guests and led them up the path into the house and the main room. Cao greeted HuangFu family with a great loud exuberance, as if they were long lost relatives. “I'm glad you could make it. Please relax, dinner will begin soon.” He made a brief motion with his hand to direct their gaze towards his family and the expansive room that had been carefully decorated with some of their more expensive items. “My wife Xiang; my son Ce and my daughter MeiLin.” Being the daughter, despite being the oldest, her name was placed last in the line up. MeiLin didn't mind; she smiled politely at their guests, smothering the little bubble of nerves and not allowing her gaze to rest long on the young man she assumed was Long. There was something vaguely familiar about him and she wondered if perhaps they had met before. “If you require anything please just ask.”
MeiLin had been dressed to perfection tonight; she clasped her hands together in front of her, the long blue sleeves covering the anxious way she twisted her fingers together. Song Tzue had been, of course, clothed in green this night. She was well aware of MeiLin's anxiety and she frowned, giving a rather venomous glance towards Cao. He was certainly not her favourite person in the world. However once Gui was spotted, her expression lightened and it took all of MeiLin forewarnings to stop her from simply walking over to cuddle the brown haired child. She could recognise another lotus when she saw one.
Over in the corner Xiang gave her odd little smile and took her turn now that her husband had finished speaking. “It is a pleasure to meet you.” Her attention had focused upon Gui and with a rustle of fabric the woman rose from her chair and approached. Her long black hair had already escaped from MeiLin careful work earlier and she had a strange aura about her as she took Gui's face between her hands. “I see you have been blessed by the gods as well.”
Cao cleared his throat, gently pulling his wife back. “Yes, yes. You can talk about that later.” He hardly wanted all that lotus nonsense brought up now.

The greetings between Long's father and Cao were very proud and warm, though Gui paid little attention to them. It was all she could do to restrain herself from rushing over to play with Song, her father's hand resting lightly on her shoulder as a careful reminder to behave. He knew what she wanted but now was not the time.
Long tensed a little on seeing MeiLin but smiled politely just the same. She seemed like a good girl, though he couldn't help the nagging feeling of familiarity. Had he seen her somewhere before? He was distracted, however, when Xiang came towards Gui. Another light touch to his 'daughter''s shoulder to keep her from exclaiming a loud response was proved unnecessary when Cao distracted them. For that, Long was very grateful. He did quietly nod and smile to the woman's question just the same.

MeiLin came forward, taking her mothers hand and leading her back to her seat. Xiang settled obediently back down with a smile, but she did not remove her gaze from Gui.
Once he was sure his wife wasn’t going to cause a scene, Cao offered Long’s father a seat s and a drink to have before dinner. The atmosphere instantly relaxed a little and Song Tzue took the chance to talk to Gui.
She marched right over, tugging up the hem of the green dress she had been forced into with one hand and reaching out with the other to grab Gui’s arm. “Hey.”
Ce had followed on her heels and bumped into her shoulder in order to press in front and frown at Gui. “Is she another weird flower kid?”

Long took the seat he was required to in the room, making sure his mother was comfortable before taking his seat and trying not to glance too nervously at Gui. She made new friends so easily but she was energetic and not too good at keeping quiet, and his father would be very offended if she were to do something too embarrassing tonight.
The brunette was immediately pleased by the other child taking her arm. "Hello!" her voice an excited but hushed tone, "Are you a scent child too? With the flower markings?" she had met a few of those before, just like her. However, when Ce came up, she gave him a brow furrowed dirty look, "Why are you calling me weird? What is wrong with being a flower?"

Song Tzue grinned. “Of course.” She tilted her head down and moved her long hair aside to show off the lotus mark on her neck. At the arrival of Ce, Song Tzue gave the boy a withering look of annoyance.
“It’s just weird.” Ce crossed his arms over his chest and frowned at Gui, an arrogant tilt to his chin. “You should be-ack! Don’t pinch me!”
Song Tzue knew she was supposed to behave herself, but she couldn’t quite help herself. She quickly took her hand back after pinching her young ‘uncle’. “Tsk. You should learn to be such a big mouth. And if you tell Cao what I did I’ll make sure MeiLin doesn’t take you on our next picnic.”

Gui's eyes widened a bit at Song Tzue's pinching of the haughty Ce, and she giggled some behind her hand. "You have much control," she whispered to Song, that weird slightly off method of speaking Gui had showing.
The child still struggled with the language, but she was doing better, but phrases she didn't use often were a struggle. So expressing something like 'you sure showed him' or 'well you have him under control' came out choppy and awkward, but still with at least some of their meaning. Gui was a very expressive creature to say the least.

Song Tzue wasn’t at all bothered by Gui’s manner of speech. As long as she understood what the other was saying, it hardly mattered how she said it. “Of course.” She gave a smug grin as Ce wandered off, rubbing his arm and muttering to himself about ‘weird girls’. “It’s important. He can’t be allowed to say things like that to my friends.”
