The "Dumbing Down" of people today has not been a thing of the present of of the last few years, say 9/11, but in American society it has been going on for more then a century. In recent years however, it has become more apparent that we are taught nothing in school. The facts that the current generation going through the grade school system are repeated over and over again throughout their education. For most, they do not retain the information and forget that they were taught the subject at all. High Literacy is not taught in the current education system. High Literacy opens a mind to the world, making one curious, asking questions. For the elite, questions are brooms to move the dust that covers secrets, so they dumb down the masses, keeping those rich to become richer and the poor becoming poorer.

Humans are a creature of routine. We watch the world and learn from it. It shapes us who we are. We only understand what we know, and embrace it. If that is the case, it was quite easy manipulate the variables for our learning throughout our early years.

I think most of it has to do with the kids not actually having to learn anything to get anywhere. You can go through the motions, not really learning anything, and still come out alright. Even at the collegiate level.

Then after the basics are down, they don't really have to learn anything important ever again. You can just watch TV. Why bother reading a book? That's slow and boring. rolleyes

When I lived in Germany I was starving for information, something new. I read constantly, which got me reading college text books in no time.

Very rarely do I not have a stack of new books waiting to be read. Bookstores are my wallet's kryptonite.

This is why if I ever have children, I would homeschool them. I dont know how well this would go, but I would rather try then leave it to the ******** up system. I want my children to be able to think for themselves, not just memorize bits of data but really think about the information they recieve.... How I will accomplish this I dont yet know, but I will be damned if TV will rule their lives as it has ruled most of mine (which I am finally putting a stop to)

Um, due to my clan's costom that we seemed to have developed, all of them, including myself, have an avi of the opposite gender. sweatdrop

And getting on topic again slightly, my teacher has let me do a report of the education system in America. I'm gonna blast them away.

We have some of the worst public schools in the world but as for Private Institutions we have some of the best.

Most people don't have the opportunity to go to private school.

@May: I have a library card from when I was in highschool. My problem is that I'm confident my library doesn't have much of what I'm interested in reading and I also like to actually own my books so I can use them for reference material whenever I want/need to. My books on ESP and psychic abilities come to mind.

Heh. My boyfriend just got a new library card the other day. He kept putting it off saying the library wouldn't have the novels he wanted and I kept telling him they would and if they didn't they would import the books from outskirt libraries. To his surprise he came home from the library with exactly what he wanted ^^. But yes, if you can afford to buy books, go for it, it's much nicer.

There's also that thing where the government can take a peek at what you're checking out of the library now. That's a big turn-off as well.
