 Ocala walked slowly, a tremble shaking its way up and down her spine. What was she thinking? This was crazy! How could she even expect to survive out here, let alone manage to trace the exact path her mother took eons ago? The very path that Ocala had been born upon. She knew some of the way home, at the very least...but the journey that would retrace her mother's steps seemed arduous at best. Even though she knew that she should just turn around right then, something pressed her to keep going, to keep moving forward. She couldn't allow herself to falter. She had nothing to go home to. A mother who loved her youngest son more than her eldest daughter, or seemed to at least. Dhanny sported a marvelous pair of wings, and he had traveled the world, bringing home a pair of feathery alicorn grandbabies for Alyna to coo over on his last visit. Whereas Ocala paled in comparison. She was unmated, and thus had procured no grandchildren for her mother to adore. She had never ventured more than a league out of their home. And even her plain tan markings dulled before Dhanny's brilliant blue and rainbow.
Ocala felt like she was an embarrassment to her mother, for not living up to the family name, as well as being an illegitimate lovechild. She just felt like she didn't belong, that maybe everyone would be better off without her. And so she had left, running at first, tears streaming along behind her. But now, as the shock of being alone caught up to her, she shivered in fear. She hadn't ever traveled alone before. What would become of her now?

As he relished the feeling of movement, he noticed a tawny something ahead of him. It was a ways on, but he seemed to be gaining on it fast enough. It took a couple of minutes for him to get close enough to realize it was a mare, and a couple more to get within speaking distance. Not wanting to blow past in case she was injured or lost, he waited until he was a few dozen yards behind her before calling out a cheery "Hullo! Evening to you!"

Ocala yelped at the sound of an unfamiliar voice, crumpling to the ground in a ball of tremors, her mane flying up to hide her face. This is it, she thought. This is how I'm going to die. Eaten by some random stranger brought in with the night! It didn't occur to her that she was being overly fearful. That the voice might well belong to someone of a more cheery nature, some good-natured traveler merely wishing her a happy evening. No, Ocala was convinced that it was a menacing Kalona from her mother's stories, come to lull her into relaxation with a friendly greeting, only to shred her to pieces later.
After a few moments passed and she had not been shredded into little bits of horseflesh, Ocala tentatively poked her nose out of the wall of mane flopped over her muzzle. "W-w-who's there?" she squeaked meekly, her two brilliantly blue eyes quivering as she peeked out for whoever had startled her.
