Hmmm....It seems that no male in today's society knows the definition of Chivalry. (For all of you who don't, it's the belief of courtesy towards women.) Countless doors have been slammed in my face, I've never been offered and umbrella, let alone had a man place his jacket on the ground. But there is a difference between outright laziness and pure cruelty, right?
In my town, a new gang recently formed for the sole purpose of humiliating and/or hurting women. Late at night, when you're walking down the street, us girls travel in packs because they'll chuck eggs and garbage at you. Two fridays ago, one came up to me, pushed my fox ears forward, (don't ask) and cracked an egg on my head. Not very fun.
So, would you consider this a lack of chivalry, or just cruelty? We've been having a debate at the town council, trying to eradicate them. So far, it's not working well... sad

That is just jevenile. Those people must have the mind of 5 year olds with the whole "girls have cooties" attitude. I practice chivalry to an extent. I open doors, when walking down a sidewalk I'll walk closer to the road leaving them the inside of the sidewalk. I don't use umbrella's so I can't offer one to a girl. I hardly wear a jacket, so I can't lay it in a puddle for a girl either. However, I do practice chivalry.
These people however, are just plain disrespectful and a disgrace to the human race.

The overall case across society is that chivalry as we know it is falling; women are coming onto the same level as men in more ways than ever before, and are starting to lose the 'pedestal' that was, in my opinion, the core of what gave socety the concept of chivalry.
In this specific case, it's sexual harassment of a highly illegal sort, and the council SHOULD be demanding the police deal with it. Try getting the media involved, especially television news; gangs like this are most easily eliminated by putting them into the limelight, in my opinion.

Chivalry has nothing to do with it. Most likely, they're just people that get off on abusing others. I'm fairly sure you can get them arrested for it, hint hint.
As for the whole chivalry thing; there are a good few guys that still actually do that whole system. In fact, most of the guys I know are centred towards courtesy towards women. What doesn't help are diehard feminists who turn around and yell at us because they can, "Open their own doors, pig~!".
It's not every woman by far, don't misunderstand, but things like that sorta leave a sour taste in your mouth for being helpful. I won't slam a door in anyone's face, but I certainly won't go out of my way to soak my jacket in a puddle for a woman anymore.

Believe me, all of us would love to see them arrested, but no one knows who they are! Thay're actually very well planned out and hidden, and they don't spray paint walls with their gang name (like DeathSkwad and Shade) they just hurt people. Lately it's also been getting worse. They found this woman beat up and bleeding, also tied up in the train tracks alleyway, and another was stabbed in the arm with a screwdriver.

Aeinor Believe me, all of us would love to see them arrested, but no one knows who they are! Thay're actually very well planned out and hidden confused Now i'm really confused. So they attack people wearing facemasks et al, so that no-one knows who they are? If there's assaults going on, such as women getting stabbed with 'drivers and shiz like that, the police most definitely MUST be called in to deal with this. DNA tests, positive ID confirmation and suspected criminals will all narrow things down; police presence in the local area will help crack down on this thuggish behaviour. Not much more I can say, really. But I don't see how stabbing a woman with a screwdriver leads onto saying that chivalry is dying in most men. wink

- And His Archaic Omnipotence said unto thee:
I don't believe in chivalry. I believe in common courtesy. The door opens both ways, so how about we hold it open for each other when the other needs it?
- And he saw that it was good.

Well, chivalry is certainly starting to die out with women demanding more equality and equity from society. It doesn't mean that there are no more "knights in shining armour" no more razz They might be mighty hard to find, but that has to do with the mentality society has towards women these days. I find it funny, that considering how dainty and frail they make women out to be in some beauty magazines, especially with articles about "Where have all the good men gone?" etc when the covers often express prosperous, healthy (with exceptions), strong women.
A female Neo-Analyst (Karen Horney? Not sure...) would be saying it has to do with the fact that men are envious of women who have something else than them and thus have to make themselves feel superior (essentially being jealous of a woman's ability to bear a child) may play a role. Those men may be feeling threatened?
But then again, this is simple plan cruelty and would be considered as a hate-crime considering that for obvious reasons, this gang is targetting innocent female victims. I find it odd that your community has not thought of trying to gain finger prints or other forensic evidence that could possibly lead to members of this gang? For all you know, it could be the guy that delivers the mail in your office and decided to enact revenge because you have a better job than he has? ~shrugs~

I can't help but be reminded about the Monty Python "Old Lady Gangs" Skit by this.
Unfortunatelly, this situation you have is probably not as funny.
However, I think this is just cruelty and not a lack of chivalry.
Also, on a different subject. Coat in the puddle idea is just for the wimpy guys. I pick up the girls, and carry them across. Much more chivalrous.
On another new subject. Women want equal rights. Women should show chivalry to men also! That way we're all equal.

If a girl was to scoot me off my feet and carry me across the puddle, i'd probably be in a rather bad mood about it all. :3

I took far too much pride in lifting heavy things growing up and yeah, I'm a pretty tough dame sweatdrop

Chivalry, for me, seems very demeaning for men. As a woman, I don't feel like I need a man to open the door for me. I don't mind having the door opened for me if I too can return the favor. There is nothing wrong with manners and polite behavior, and the sort, but if we scream out equal rights and equal pay, why should men still have to pay for dinner all the time? Why can we not split the bill, or take turns paying for it at a restaurant. The whole jacket on water thing, I think it is wasteful, you get a perfectly nice coat, and dirty and messy and for what? I think it is not worth it. I don't mind being treated like a princess sometimes, but I don't think it should be one-sided as is often seen.
