How do you guys think paleontology would be conducted in a steampunk setting? During the Victorian period, paleontology seemed to be more about getting impressive specimens than actual science. So, do you think that paleontology in a steampunk setting would have progressed as it already has, or differently?

I would imagine that the very essence of paleontology would be different from either time period. I believe that it would be done with huge steam powered contraptions that would pull the specimen out and clean it. Then the scientist would examine the specimen and attempt to restore it.

Okay, cool. But I don't quite understand what you mean by the "essence."

Now that you mention it, I don't either. The very fabric of paleontology would be different....that doesn't make much more sense, does it?

I think, depending on madam likes her steam, it'd either be the same or very different. The same in that, they'd probably still think they were all terrible monsters! Just as they did in the real world. Only with all sorts of cool steam machines to dig them out of the ground!
OR
Slightly more excitingly, they'd invent some sort of machine that brings the dinosaurs BACK TO LIFE! gonk Think One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing/The Lost World! And even more excitingly, they plan an expedition to the deep jungles/the centre of the Earth and find 'the lost world' of dinosaurs there for them to study/hunt! biggrin
