Any Buddhist militants out there?
If so...
What Nation?
What service?
What job?
What's life like for a Buddhist in the military?
Are infantry jobs acceptable?

ninja Well, I haven't joined yet, but I am going to join the USMC (specifically USMC Aviation)... I haven't really thought of the possible clash with my Buddhist beliefs.... I should look into that. 3nodding

Sorry for posting a somewhat useless answer. sweatdrop

*Edit* Military service is fine so long as you never take life for granted, and so long as you never come to hate your enemy. There are some 3,000 buddhists in the US military right now.

America
What service?
Army
What job?
Glorified Infantry...The MP corps

It's a little lonely and you can get ridiculed from time to time, until you start doing better then them or you save someones lives. The thing I awlays get is why aren't I sitting crosslegged humming in at an altar, lol.
Are infantry jobs acceptable?
My job is very similar to the Infantry, accept I have to usually bring the enemy in alive and as close to unharmed as possible. That is actually rather difficult at sometimes, but I never take it personal when they resist or try to take my life.

So if I were to be a sniper and would have to kill someone it would be... ok?

I suppose the question here is if you could live with the karma you're going to drag in killing people like that. If you feel you can bear the burden of ending another's life, and are serious with yourself, and consider deeply what it means, you can do this job. It will take its toll on you mentally, as a Buddhist, for certain. It becomes very difficult to dehumanize people and shoot them without feeling when you can see yourself at the other end of your gun.

Also keep in mind that "not killing" is the first precept of Buddhism for a very good reason.

I'm active in the Airforce Cadets, here in Australia and we do pretty well to move around religious beliefs, as many people of different beliefs work and participate there.
I find it great. I do wish to forward my career in the Airforce, not for the fact of killing and/or destroying, I just wish to have the expericence of flight.

America, National Guard, MP.

I'm not entirely in yet, I finish the processing step today(if all goes well) and then I get boot camp. I don't expect it to be much different than it is for anyone else. The only teaching that I can see possibly being broken is having to harm other people, but I will do what I have to do.

I believe what really matters is how this makes you feel. Can you handle shooting at other people? Can you handle their blood being on your hands? Even if so, will you feel no guilt? Might you feel guilt about not feeling guilt? These are some questions to look at. I see it this way- if I must shoot, I only do so because I must. If I must kill, I only do so because I must. Knowing it is a possibility, why do I go into the situation that would make it so? I'm very close to having a family of my own and I have to be capable of providing for them. Also, six years of service is a civic duty. The way I see it, I'm still simply doing what I must.

Infantry isn't what I would recommend. Yes, if you're good for it and can do the job without any problems it may be great for you, but when you get out you are simply a house wife trained to kill. There aren't many civilian jobs available to ex-infantry, at least not that rely on such training. I would recommend being something that has a long-time benefit.
