============================ * Introduction to Gaia Security * ============================ The purpose of this thread is to safeguard you against the most common forms of account theft - though be aware that nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
The first post will cover your password, the second will cover examples of common pitfalls to watch out for.
While most of you will never need this information, to err is to be human, and knowledge is power, so read on!============================

============================ * Passwords * ============================ The key to a secure account is a solid password. If your password is something obvious like your username, or the word "password", you can expect not to hold on to your account for very long.
Just what defines secure varies from site to site, and person to person, however I'd say that at the very least considering the following tips will dissuade all but the most determined of hackers.
Tips:
Use at least 8 characters Use a jumble of letters and numbers If you're still worried after the above, you can even use capital letters to add further to the strength of your password.
A password of 8 characters in length, with alphanumeric (lower case only) characters means that you're looking at about 3 trillion possible combinations which a would be hacker would have to sift through.============================

============================ * Common Traps * ============================ New/Limited Offer Beta Testing These scams give you a supposedly legit link to a new GaiaOnline "feature" which you've been invited to join the beta testing for. These can range from the zOMG! MMO to a new Daily Chance which gives out old items.
The trap is when you click the link, it sends you to an off-site page which makes it look like you've logged out. When you try to log back in, the site records your username and password to a list for the owner to read through at their leisure.
ALWAYS check that the url is http://www.gaiaonline.com when logging in.
Pop-Up Warning You have been caught by a bot detection program! Enter your Username and Password or get bann- yeah right. When you get a pop-up on your screen asking for your username and password, you close it. Nothing bad will happen as long as you don't enter your details.
Catching the person doing it... well, that's a tad trickier as it's often hidden in a signature. You can just report the thread and say which page it's on and the mod team can track it down.
NEVER enter your username into a pop-up dialog box. Gaia doesn't use them.
You have Been Reported! If you get a PM from someone, which says you've been reported... Well, if the user in question doesn't have a Green, Pink or Orange name, chances are they're bluffing - especially if they have a Black name!
Should you get a PM like this, click the "Report a PM" button at the bottom of the screen. Remember, Gaia doesn't need your password!
NEVER give another person your password.
REMEMBER: Never tell someone your password, and never put your password into any pop-ups or sites other than www.gaiaonline.com ============================

============================ * Bonus Tricks * ============================ If you still got hacked
Hard luck, I suggest hopping on a mule account, and using this page to let Gaia know that you got hacked. The mod team will investigate.
Adblock Users:
If you adblock the following sites, you minimise the number of phishing pop-ups you recieve! For those of you who don't have Adblock - get it!http://*.110mb.com/* http://*.t35.com/* http://*.collectlogin.com/* http://91.105.0.107/* ============================

I can't remember my password because it is super strong and long so I leave it written on a post it conveniently located on my monitor. I put a warning too. "Don't look at my Gaia password, or else!"

Heh. My alts actually have stronger passwords than this account. But I still use 10+ characters whenever possible. And of course I mix in symbols, too.
Tip! Use symbols in place of random letters. For example, instead of "Pastrami" for a password, use "Pa$tr@mi". (Not every site will allow symbols, but Gaia does)
