The end of winter meant the beginning of spring. A commonly uttered phrase is that ‘April showers bring May flowers.’ And it was already April. Rain was falling heavily on the majority of the districts. It had been storm after storm for the past few days that no one could even think of going out of the house for recreation. Today was a nicer day. There was no wind but the rain continued to pour and it was incredibly humid.
“But I don’t want to go to the market.” Stasio whined to his dad. He had never been this fussy, but when he was forced to wear an ugly raincoat and feel confined the entire week, he got upset and a little bit cranky.
“We have to get dinner for tonight. You do want to eat yummy food, right?” His dad sweet-talked the tiny songbird. “And you want carrots so you can get big and strong like Virgil and Daddy, right?” It was a sweet spot ever since the young boy was taken to the preschool and became friends with another songbird, Virgil.
Stasio pouted a little as he swished his restricted tail under his raincoat. “Yes…” he replied, a little unwillingly. “But we get to go home right away after we buy them, right?” He asked quietly in a hopeful voice. He didn't want to be taken here and there anymore when it was still rainy. The sun was his friend and he knew that it liked being seen too.
“sure thing! Wait here while I get the carrots from that stall. There’s too many people and I don’t want you trampled.” He said as he told the little bird to stay. Under the roofed building, Stas stood still and watched as his dad was eaten into the crowd. Moments later, he lost sight of his dad, and then the stand. He peered around and saw nothing familiar.

A small songbird female was out today as well, skipping along and holding hands with a tall muscular man in black. The pair actually looked related, which was something - both with long white hair, funny black markings on their faces, white wings and golden eyes. This tot was shopping with "Mommy", a man called Divine that was her primary guardian, and he seemed a little distracted by his grocery list and so Gail was able to slip away sometimes.
Unlike Stasio, Gail wasn't restricted by a raincoat and her wings were happily stretched out to catch raindrops as she walked. However, the girl stopped abruptly on spotting the other child, "Oh! Hi there!" the tot greeted, waving frantically to Stasio. "Wotcha doin?"

Stas looked around to see a girl with bright gold eyes and wings! He wanted to cry, but not out of sadness, but out of happiness that someone would even think of coming up to him and talking to him. Most adults would stare or just ignore him, but this girl actually noticed him and wanted to talk! "Hi!" he said happily, hiding his tears before they could start flowing down his cheeks. "I'm not supposed to be doing anything. My daddy told me to stay right here." He said as he began his story. "But I lost him. I have to go find him, but he told me not to move, so I can't." he said, finishing with an anti-climactic ending.
"But who are you and did your mommy and daddy get lost too?" he asked, not really knowing what was appropriate to ask and what wasn't.

THe girl's eyes widened "Oh no!" she said in surprise. That was awful! Losing your Daddy and then not being able to look!
"I'm Gail and my Daddy's right there." she said pointing to the swan man, who made a point to stand as near to his daughter as he could without getting out of line. He was particularly easy to spot with his wings. "Where did your Daddy go?"

Stas looked over to the direction in which she pointed. You really couldn't mistake her father for the father of someone else. "Gail's daddy is a lot bigger than my daddy." He said as he was mesmerized at how powerful his wings must've been to lift him in flight and remain soaring. "My daddy looks like this" He said as he put his index fingers and thumbs into rings and then proceeded to put them around his eyes. "He looks nothing like I do and doesn't have wings like your daddy." He said with a smile to the girl. "I think he went to get groceries for dinner." He replied as he thought back to before his dad got lost. "Maybe he will come back." Stas said, trying to look on the bright side of things. Besides, he had a bit of company for a while, right?

Gail smiled, "I'm sure he'll be back!" she said after a bit. "What's your name?" the tot asked, flicking her wings. "Your wingies are nice. I's got some too, and so does Wren. We came from eggs - Mommy didn't - my Daddy's called Mommy and my other Daddy's called Daddy and my other other Daddy's called Papa - but Papa and Daddy got Mommy my egg cause it was a swan egg too! Do you come from an egg?"

Stas blinked and started to try figure that out in his head. In the end, he didn't but he nodded and just believed that Gail had two daddies and a mommy. That was alright to him. "I came from an eggie too. But I don't have a mommy or another daddy. an' I like your wings too! they're very pretty!" He said as he shook his head slowly. He did have his dad's friends coming over to play with him though, but it still wasn't like having a mommy... "your daddy has wings like you and looks like you too. I don't look like daddy at all." he mentioned as he noticed that she and her father had the same facial coloration and wings. He almost made himself panic when he got the thought that his daddy wasn't really his daddy.

"We're the same kind of birdy." she said with a nod, not bothering to correct him that her "daddy" was called Mommy. Some days she slipped up and forgot too, so why make him remember?
"What's your Daddy like? Is he nice?"

Stasio smiled as he nodded back at her. "what kind of birdy are you and your daddy?" He asked her before answering her question about his dad. "My daddy is tall and wears glasses and is cool and i love him thiiissss much!" he said as he raised his arms and went on his tippy-toes as he said it. After, he just went back down and finished with "he's awesome!" and grinned wholeheartedly. "What about your daddy, is he awesome too?" He asked as he got caught up in the conversation that he completely forgot that he had to look for his dad or else he may never get home.

"We're swans!" Gail told the other boy proudly, "We're supposed to be really really pretty and graceful." Not that she knew quite what that entailed, but she could try!
"My Daddies are all awesome." the girl agreed, flicking her wings a bit. "Should we look for yours?"

"wow! I've never seen a reeeaalll swan before. My daddy reads me a book about a swan though!" He said as he remembered his dad reading him 'The Ugly Duckling' to sleep many nights ago. "Okay! Let's go look for my daddy." He said as he offered out his hand to her. "My daddy always holds my hand so i don't lose him. But we let go of our hands when he walked away to get groceries." Stas explained to Gail.
"I forgot to tell you my name from before, but I'm Stas!" He said happily but a little bit embarrassed that he didn't answer her question at all from before. He swished his tail and fluttered his wings a little before announcing, "Let's go find daddy!"

"okay Stas! LEt's go!" she agreed, taking his hand and walking with him into the crowd.
Divine had just gotten finished in line and blinked in surprise as he daughter walked off with some strange child. Immediately he followed after them.
"Don't go too far." he called, not the best runner with a lot of groceries.

Stasio looked back to see her daddy calling out to her. He gave him a friendly wave before being eaten into the crowd; his hand in Gail's hand. "I don't know where daddy would have gone..." He said as he walked with the swan girl. "Where do you think daddies like going to?" He asked his friend as he was led into the crowd; deeper and deeper into the marketplace. Stas had only been here once or twice before when his dad forgot to buy groceries when he was at school and had to get them on the weekend. It was all brand new to him; the stalls, the shopkeepers and the layout of the marketplace.

"Maybe for foods?" Gail said, pointing at the different things in the crowd. There were all sorts of stalls for food and signs up here and there that she could barely read. "Look! Choklates!" she squeaked, pointing and pulling him over towards it.
Divine barely managed to keep up with them through the crowd. He was so glad he could fly some days.

Stas looked up as he wasn't the tallest of the people in the crowd. The longer they seemed to walk, the less familiar the market seemed to be. He wandered as he held Gail's hand tightly and keeping it close to his own body in case they were forced to separate from each other. He looked to where he pointed to, but at the shout of 'choklates' from the swan girl, he was instantly pulled along. "What're those?" He asked her. His dad had never told him about chocolate and neither had Stas eaten many things that were that colour on purpose. "Do daddies like these? They look funny." He asked and said to Gail who he hoped knew what she was doing and where she was going.
