It took awhile for Hallows' eyes to become adjusted to the afternoon light. The light of the sun warmed his dark coat to an increasingly annoying amount. Why he had to be awake at this time he had no real clue. His group knew that he was normally nocturnal and preferred the shade of trees or the coolness of the starry sky and full moon over his head. It was an annoyance, and Hallows was becoming tired of the daytime interruptions. They were starting to become more frequent. Too frequent for his taste.

Be that as it may Hallows was, for once, awake during the daylight hours. A bit grumpy, but awake non-the-less. Nymphalidae was nowhere to be found so he couldn't occupy his time with her. Not that he really could since his group had no idea she was even in the area. On top of that he had to wonder if her being her was what started the interruptions. Didn't really matter though at this point. If they found out about her then they did. He'd chase them out before they could do the same to her.

As Hallows made his way down a shallow incline out of the nearby hills Hallows heard something, like the ruffling of feathers. For a moment he stopped, lifting his head to sniff the air. Someone was nearby. Making a quick note of that he started off again slowly, a bit more cautious. He personally didn't want or need any attacks today.

As the wind picked up a tiny bit, his leathery pair of small wings moved on their own accord.

"Stupid little things...so useless." he mumbled.

The flurry of feathers that Hallows had heard was no bird or leaf on the wind, but a proud stallion coarsing along the edge of the territory that his herd had claimed as their own. It was due time that he took Thunderbird on a patrol such as this - to show him what it meant to be the protector of the herd, and the extent of their coveted land.

From the waterfall that surged off of the cliff on one side to the tangled weave of a forest that clawed as far up the mountain as it could before the air ran thin at the other. Both sides of the territory were well protected - be it from rocky cliff or choking, dark woods - the inhabitants of which were whispered of in a hushed voice to many a scared foal.

IT was these natural barriers that sheltered the verdant valley that served as the grazing and foaling grounds of the Thunderbird herd. IT was this coveted land that Balrog sought to protect, and train the next generation - every bit as valuable to him as the land how to carry on this legacy.

And he could think of no finer heir than the Angeni stallion that now soared by his side, who had been named for the very totem that they had followed. It was Thunderbird the totem that they credited to his arrival.

He had taken to the air as if he were born in it - his double set of wings not cetting in each others' way, but instead allowing him to perform maneuvers that even Balrog - who had been flying for more seasons than he cared to count - had taken years to perfect.

Balrog refused to cater to the whispered rumors that the stallion was not really the true son of Stormwild and himself. In his eyes, he was the son he had always wanted - a true gift from the Spirits to cannonize his union with Stormwild.

"These are the lands that you will protect. These are the lands that have cradled our family, our herd. These whipping winds above and vast lands below have shaped our herd and have allowed us to bear many a proud and strong foal. It is these lands we must protect - from predators and lessers alike."

Thunderbird had no trouble keeping up with his father as he led him around the lands. He was a young stallion - but fully confident in his larger body. He had been looking forward to this day - when Balrog would take him on this tour of their lands. To see what bounties they claimed as their own, and how to protect the lands from threats.

It was the Angeni who spotted the dark shape against the bare rocks to the East. And while the cliffs were just outside their territory, Balrog had said to him to keep a wary eye on the surroundings.

"There, father. Another soquili? One I do not recogise."

Balrog turned his head to follow Thunderbird's line of sight, and angled his wings to turn, to meet this stranger. He would need to see if he had a purpose of being here, and be told that he encroached on his territory if he did not.

It took a moment for Hallows to realize that he was not alone. But when he did he stopped fully to meet the two winged stallions coming towards him. One was bigger than the other, he noted, and looked powerful. Maybe he was one of the elders he remembered his foster mother talking to him about when he was younger. The other next to him looked no less powerful and it gave him reason to be calm and collected. Despite being a a rather foul mood due to the headache formed from the slowly unlocking memories, Hallows did his best to look as non-threatening as possible. For it seemed fate had decided that he entered someone's territory unintentionally. Nymphalidae would get a kick out of this one when he got back and they could be together again.

As the pair flew to intercept this interloper, the form became more clear. It was indeed a soquili - but not one Balrog recognized. It was a dark shape - the green tints to his coat was the first thing that becaome ovious, and then, a small pair of wings on his back and arcing horns.

An uneasy rumble echoed in Balrog's chest as his eyes critically acessed this strange stallion. He was on the lookout for soquili such as Stormwild had described to him - demons - with arcing horns and batlike wings that were a perversion of their kind, manipulative and cruel. Was this one such demon? And if so, what was it doing in his territory?

Balrog landed hard, keeping his wings unfurled to emphasize his size. "Stay aware, Thunderbird." He cautioned, though his meaning was expressed in more than just words.

Thunderbird knew that a possibility on this expedition was that they might actually encounter something that wasn't supposed to be there - perhaps a cougar or hungry coyote - but to see a strange soquili was exciting! He kept silent for the moment, prepared to see what sort of example Balrog set, how one should deal with a strange interloper.

Now, who are you stallion? Why have you entered my territory?" His posture said that this stallion meant business.

Hallows was indeed startled by the sudden landing of two large stallions like himself. However to show that would be a sign of weakness, something he could not allow right now when he was thinking to set off on a journey of his own to his homelands. Little did he know that he actually intruded on someone's territory; such an idea in this part of the mountain side caught him off guard as well. It wasn't every day he had to deal with others outside the current Soquili he resided with, let alone in the humidity of the day. Regardless, the stallion was doing his job and Hallows had to respect that much.

"My apologies Stallion, I was not aware that I was intruding on someone's territory. You see, I came to this side of the land scouting out the best ways around the mountains, simply for the reasons of finding the best way back to my home herd, the one who has been lost to the void of my memories. If you could explain to me the best way that would be the most helpful."

Immediately, Balrog was sizing up this strange soquili, his eyes narrowing even more at the horns. But those he could almost forgive, but the batlike wings, that was the telltale sign. And how tiny they were - could this demon even fly?? If not, and if this were a representative sample of their kind, then truly they were perversions of the magnificence of the winds.

"Indeed you have." Balrog rumbled, irritation edged with hostility in his voice. "These are my lands, colt, and one such as yourself would be ill advised to proceed further inward." He mentioned going around the mountains - that seemed to be another indication that this stallion lacked the ability to fly.

If this was the truth, and not some ruse to get the elder to lower his guard.

Balrog never took his eyes from him, and never completely folded his great wings by his side, prepared to move if he needed to.

"IF you seek to get around these mountains, I would suggest that you head back down and follow the river. When the roar settles to a babble, you may be able to cross and proceed from there." His ears were still back agianst his head. But if it meant this soquili would leave his land and go around it, then fine."

Thunderbird still held his tongue, listening to how Balrog dealt with an intruder. IF this was one of the "terrible Kalona", he didn't seem so fearsome. His eyes wandered to the climbing peaks and the dense forests that surrounded them. Going around those mountains would be no easy task - though he himself had never explored the ground terrain that much. Maybe there was a way.

The black stallion caught on to the irritation in the other's voice and Hallows was put on guard. Mostly for his own safety. He hated being smaller than a stallion, the testosterone must have been talking, but he also wasn't stupid in the slightest. He may be young but he had common sense. Either way, this stallion in particular seemed to be extremely protective of any outsiders, something Hallows had to respect.

"Well then, thank you for the correction. I have meant no offense."

Hallows had to halt for a moment, wondering if the male would take offense to him turning around and just leaving. Some stallions took it as a sign of disrespect. Other's didn't really care. And in this case Hallows didn't want to piss anyone off more than he already had. Nymphalidae would get a kick out of this one when he got back. This hesitation couldn't help but annoy Hallows at the same time though. He hated feeling inferior to others.

Balrog held his ground as if he were a pillar of stone that rose out of the earth. He was certain, at least, to prevent this soquili at the cusp of stallionhood from progressing any further into his territory. He might be young, but he would learn the lesson of not to tread in others' lands. Especially Balrog's.

"These are the grounds of the Thunderbird herd, colt. Be advised of them. Consider this your warning." His eyes flashed quickly to the young Angeni stallion by his side. He appeared to be approximately the same age as the intruder, and Hallows might catch an informative look pass between them. As if to say 'this is how it is done.'"

Thunderbird tossed his long mane and gave an agreeing nod, though there was more curiosity in his eyes than the smoldering fire of the elder wind.

Note July 8, 2012: it's been some time since this RP has had movement - and the way it left seems like it could be a good wrap point, so I'll go ahead and consider it closed for the moment - but drop me a PM if you want to get it going again.
