john was in a horrible accident, in which he fell into a pungee pit that he had dug. three spikes went clear through chest, and one through his left hand. he only survived through his own stubborness. he refused to die then and there. when the grim reaper appeared in front of him, john spit blood in his face. the reaper didn't take too kindly to that, and decided to just leave john to suffer. john eventually clawed his way out of the pit where he was captured by slave hunters. unlike most immortals, john knew when to give up. to beat death all he had to do is live, but he didn't have the strength to fight the hunters.
