When had the night ever felt lonely to him? When had he ever imagined the sun low in the sky, the sweep of the sea, and a pair of tender blue eyes more radiant then the sky? His mind had always been filled with thoughts of his family, of his siblings, of the shadows that wrapped around the forest. He had always been content to snuggle against furs his mother had arranged for them...yet now he snuggled alone. He was grown, his siblings were grown, and though he saw his mother look at him with love he also saw something strange and new in her gaze. It was as if she were trying to understand him in a new way, like a puzzle that escaped her grasp.

He knew exactly what it was, but he didn't want to give her the piece just yet, he didn't want her to complete the puzzle. Jaile was what had changed him, her soft coat with its shadowy marks and flashes of soft brightness. Dark eyes surrounded by little sun colored markings. At least he imagined them so, the sun was something he avoided for so long it could be green for all he knew or cared. He was antsy to be with her, to meet her at the dunes as promised. He wanted to show her the beauty of the night, the magic that could be found in lonely dark places. Soon he knew his mother would find that last piece and then he would have to make some sort of clear intention...he would have to leave his parents home...if he ever wanted one of his own.

The trouble was...when he imagined a life with Jaile it was never in the same place. He could picture them on the beach at night, in a cave as the sun attempted to filter in. He could see her running across the open shore with the sun violently brightening ever strand of her fur...but he was never in that image. Likewise he could see himself in a dark shadow hidden in the forest, but Jaile's brightness was nowhere there. A bird may love a fish, but where would they live? An old and curious question, and one it seemed he would need to find a proper response for. He abandoned good sense and he knew his parents would purse their lips and frown to see the way he darted out into the open sparse land between the thick trees and the shore. He couldn't help himself though, so eager he was to see Jaile again.

It had felt like forever. Waiting for evenings light had kept Jaile up most of the night. For some reason her thoughts had only lingered upon the ebony furred wolf she had met just once before. Her little nocturnal knight that had rescued her from wandering and dancing away from the sea. . . Strange how one evening had made such a lasting impression. She had thought him nothing more than a good memory and yet the spirits had let them meet again.

And what a meeting. They had both grown, both changed and strangely enough Jaile found herself rather smitten. He was charming, fun, and incredibly handsome. She was so plain and simple in comparison to his secrets, his shadows . . . And yet he had called her beautiful. The words had repeated over and over in her head, and the wolfess couldn't help but float on cloud nine.

If Faile had wondered she hadn't asked; the same with Jaxom and others of her pack. they were a scare group and while Jaile didn't want to necessarily hide Sly . . . She wanted to keep her feelings a secret. Just for now. They were still new and they were still almost strangers. . . No, she would keep this to herself for now and see what came of it.

Maybe she was just over thinking everything.

Still, the wolfess had actually felt vain. She had groomed her fur for hours to make it shine and clean and had even donned a small bit of kelp wrapped loosely about her ear. Attached atop the small tangle of seaweed was a pink sea star which rested neatly by her ear.

Yes, she was dolling herself up but she couldn't help it. She wanted to make a good impression on Sly in case her appearance the night before had been less than stellar. Oh sure, he had called her beautiful, but tonight she wanted to really feel it. It wasn't everyday she got to meet a handsome wolf after all!

Anxious as ever, Jaile had arrived at the dunes a bit early, her excitement getting the best of her. So the wolfess had forced her nerves to calm and instead tried to sit still and gaze out at the ocean. This was no different then yesterday. . . . Just another meeting between friends, right? Right!

Her ears flicked and turned with every noise. A wind, a small shore bird preparing to nest for the night. . . Curling her tail about her paws, Jaile reminded herself to be patient, to wait. He'd make himself known when he was ready.

He stilled and his eyes focused on the vision ahead, was it even possible? She was even more radiant then he remembered...he slunk back a step or two and frowned. What was he doing, how could he bring her into the darkness, into some...cave. It had seemed such a perfect place to him, but he loved the darkness, loved how it hid things, hid everything, but he didn't want to hide Jaile. He lifted his head his eyes narrowing trying to catch every detail of her, her fur shone, something was nestled above her ear.

He looked around and frowned trying to come to somekind of resolution, he wanted to be with Jaile, but he still felt guilty for it...she would be tired to stay awake so late. He spotted a small patch of blue flowers and moved to snap them off at the stems, night bloomers. He slipped back into the open and walked towards her trying to keep from rushing over and knocking into her like a fool.

A smile slipped onto his muzzle easily as he reached her and he laid the flowers down for her. His eyes flicked to the item behind her ear, it was a small piece of seaweed draped and holding a pink star shape. He envied the decor wishing it were his nose, his tongue, his muzzle nestled there instead drinking in her scent. His nose flicked down instead and he nudged the flowers. "These are for you...you look...amazing." Beautiful, Delicious, Tempting, he wanted to tell her, but he was worried his words would frighten her.

Jaile heard the sound of something heavy slinking closer. This had to be him. Slowly the female turned to study the male, though a radiant smile instantlyl brightened her features. For a moment her blue eyes ate him up, hungrily. So strange for her to be acting so silly. . . . She had gone how many years without him in her life, why should she feel so smitten now!?

But something had tugged at Jaile, and it was a feeling she couldn't entirely resist. It had taken her by surprise, something that had developed in that one evening with him. And yet here she was, smiling up at him like some foolish pup. . . . He had grown up so handsome Jaile felt small and ugly in comparison. She couldn't help it . . . The seasalt often left her coat less shiny than some neighboring packs, or the ocean breezes often kept her slightly disheveled. Sly was large, cunning and intelligent; he lived a life she still didn't entirely understand, with a family that lived fully in shadow. She was a wolfess of the day . . .of the sea. . . He of the night, of the woods. But no matter their differences, the young female plum didn't care. Just to get another night with him . . . that's all she wished.

"Sly!" She breathed, rising from her seated place. Blue eyes eventually tore off of the ebony male and looked at the gift he had brought her. Flowers! Just for her. Her tail wagged as she lowered her nose to the night bloomers, taking in their fragrence and admiring their beauty. "They're beautiful!" She breathed, quite ecstatic. He had brought her flowers, what a complete surprise! Chuckling lightly, she picked one up, gingerly nipping the bud from the stem. Offering it to Sly, she gave him a grin. "Here. You can tuck it next to the sea star. . . That way I can take it with me when we go."

He smiled at the way she moved to stand as if she were as eager to see him as he was to see her, maybe she was. The thought that they both felt so glad to be together again made his spirits lift and when she inhaled the scent of the flowers...He'd bring her flowers everyday if he could see her look so happy.

He grinned when she asked him to place the flower, ah finally a chance to be close. He scooped it up and moved closer until his shoulder touched her fur and he was able to lean over her and arrange the bloom. His nose twitched as he inhaled her scent mixed with that of the flower and he lingered longer then was probably needed.

"There" He smiled and slowly slid back, but not too far, he didn't want to be too far from her. "You look beautiful..." He murmured softly. He realized he had actually spoken the words out loud and ducked his head surprised at himself.

Jaile almost held her breath as he approached. She felt the press of his shoulder against her own, the close proximity of his face, and his own scent mixed with hers. She was of the sea, and his scent was much more rugged and earthy; he did indeed smell of the night, of the earth and woodlands. . . It was strangely intoxicating.

Oh, if only she'd just stop acting so silly! Her heart was practically fluttering and when he stepped away she still felt his touch. She was inwardly pleased that he hadn't stepped so far back and was still close. She . . . rather liked him right where he was. Though she had to force herself not to inch a bit closer. Honestly, her mother would roll her eyes at her if she witnessed such silly and puppish behavior! But Jaile just couldn't help herself.

Her ears pricked and she couldn't help but sit just a little taller at his words. Her? Beautiful? Laughing softly, the dark furred femme gave a little shake of her head. Still, she ducked her own head lower than his own and looked up at him, almost nose to nose. "I bet you say that to all the girls," she teased gently, trying to ease his discomfort. "But . . . you make me feel beautiful, so thank you." Were her words slightly shakey, maybe. . . but it was true.

In all honestly, Jaile never thought herself a particularly pretty girl. Her coat was very plain, and oddly mixed. A black-brown with paler brown . . .and then random spots of orange here and there. She had witnessed other wolves like her cousins and some of their vibrantly coated companions. . . . What little vanity she had accepted she was no great beauty.

Except, maybe, when she was around Sly. Not wanting to sound selfish or incredibly vain, and not wanting to make him believe she didn't find HIM handsome, she added, "But with such a charming and attractive male saying such sweet things, I suppose it's a very easy thing to feel."

He had to remember to breathe, to swallow as his mouth went dry the way she looked at him made all his muscles tighten and all his senses sharpen. He wanted to press close to her again to shield her from everything and everyone and keep her. It was laughable though, because the most danger she would probably ever face would be from him, and the darkness he lived in.

He snorted at her mention of other girls, what other girls? No female had ever drawn his eye the way Jaile did, but he knew the words would sound sugared and false so he kept them to himself. He was at least glad that she felt beautiful, that he made her feel that way. He tried to imagine how some other male might look at her but it caused a soft growl to build in his chest and he shoved the image aside fiercely.

Charming? attractive? She was talking about him? He chuckled softly, he was certainly no prince charming, he knew with his dark colors and tendency to slip into shadows that he was more the monster then the knight. "I'm just glad you see me that way." He stood and shook off with a smile.

"I don't want to keep you too late, but I did want to show you something...I hope you'll like it." He moved to lead them into the forest.

Jaile retreated a few steps to give him room after he gave a soft snort in reply. Though her smile never wavered, Jaile did wonder about any competition she had with her friend. He was sweet to call her beautiful but she could only imagine the shadowy dark wolves she might have to contend with. This, of course, if he was even interested in her on a . . . more intimate level.

Oh goodness, was she even thinking such things? He was her friend, a friend who sometimes made her blush or feel pretty. No need to read more in to it than was necessary. A little flirtation here or there, a few painted complements didn't necessarily mean anything. The romantic in her was just getting too out of hand.

Falling quiet, the young female trotted after her friend. Part of her wondered where he might take her, what he had in store for the pair of them. "No need to fret about the time of day," she murmured softly behind him, eyes bright. "I expected to be out later and tried to get an extra nap in this afternoon." It only made sense. Her excitement at seeing him so soon made settling to sleep difficult but she had done her best!

Besides, she doubted sleep would exhaust her so soon. Not with her eagerness to spend some time with the night wolf. "I'm sure it'll be wonderful," she assured with a small chuckle. The smile she wore was proof enough that anything he thought important enough to show her would be splendid. Heck, he didn't have to show her anything when it came down to it. He could walk her in circles and she'd be happy as a lark, if only because it meant time to bond with him.

. . . oh boy did she have it bad. Strange really. Jaile always thought herself much to practical to find herself drowning in a crush so swiftly.

He smiled at the way she followed him, she trusted him even going into the unknown, into the darkness other wolves often avoided. He glances back at her every few moments to ensure she was alright, and to just look at her. Her fur color didn't blind him, didn't detract from the shadows that nearly made him invisible. He liked the soft flashes of color dark and a speck of orange every few moments when the darkness didn't steal the color from her. His sister was offensively bright, like a constant torch in the night, she stood out and he felt bad that she was so vastly different then the rest of the family.

"We're almost there..." He finally broke the silence as they wound up a slow incline and the trees became thicker and thicker blotting out the weak night light. He leapt up onto a rock and then another pausing again to make sure Jaile could manage. He leapt down then and looked around with a smile, they were in a shallow little ravine surrounded by large boulders. He grinned at her and motioned with his head for her to follow him and then he slipped between two large rocks where an opening was just large enough for a grown wolf to wriggle through. He slunk down and squirmed his way in vanishing to her eyes behind the rocks and judging by the angle probably into the great slab of rock that formed a small mountain behind them.

The young female followed Sly quietly as he guided her through the darkness. While the female was unaccustomed to meandering around at night, she found his presence comforting; there was something pleasant in the darkness, as if it were harboring a great secret from all the world and only those that walked in moonlight could find out. Besides, any worry or concern she might have had walking alone was lessened knowing that Sly was out there, somewhere amidst the shadow and starlight.

It was a nice feeling. . . .

The darkness offered a new spin on the world, and let her forget about the crashing and rolling sea and sunshine she was used to. The femme moved quietly, curious where she might be taken. She trusted Sly completely, and while some might call her foolish for he honestly WAS still a bit of a stranger, he was also her knight. He'd shown his good heart after saving her and guiding her home while puppies; though there were things about him she didn't know, she had every confidence about where he'd take her. Honestly she'd follow him forever if that's how long his walk took. . . .

Following Sly in to a part of the woods that seemed overrun with foliage, the young female followed as he hopped from rock to rock. Thankfully, she was adept at such movements, as there were places near the shore that could only be reached by ambling up and down the rocky cliff side. But the blue eyed girl did hesitate as soon as he wriggled through two rocks. Still. . . . giving her coat a small shake, she slipped in after, not wanting to lose him in the darkness or be alone for long.

"I bet it'll be amazing," she whispered to herself. Wherever they were going wasn't a particularly easy endeavor to reach. As far as Jaile was concerned, some of the most wonderful places and things took a bit of work to gain and find. This place seemed like one of them, wherever it lead.

Sly grinned as he saw Jaile wriggle in her way in he turned and gazed down the wide tunnel, ahead soft light danced tinted in blue. He moved to walk beside her now, the area large enough to do so. He paused and let her take in the sight as it unfolded before them.

There was water gushing from a stone and filling a basin that had obviously been carved over time by the hot water. Steam rose up slowly giving everything a cozier feel then a dark wet cave might otherwise have. The light came from above where high, high up moonlight poured in through the stones and bounced off the quartz covered walls. It was a natural paradise that most two leggers would probably kill to excavate, but for Sly it was just a special place. A special place he was only to happy to share with Jaile now, in the hopes she too would appreciate it's beauty.

He always felt good after coming here and spending a night enveloped in the warm steam or taking a dip in the bubbling hot water. If he had known how rich in minerals this cavern was he might have understood it's pleasant effects, but he liked to imagine it was moon magic.

Jaile wriggled her way in the small cave, wondering exactly where her friend might be guiding her. Orange tipped ears pricked as she heard the unmistakable sound of water. . . . Water? Here? So far from the ocean? As the tunnel widened and Sly came to walk beside her, she found herself curious at the tings of blue.

Ooooh. . . . . And as the tunnel continued to widen and open out before them, the black and brown female gasped and stopped. Her blue eyes went wide with surprise, but sheer delight and joy swiftly followed. "Oh Sly!" She gasped, quite amazed by the beautiful scene. The way light danced off the quartz crystals, and the steam of water that was warm. It was breath taking . . . Jaile had never seen anything so beautiful!

Oh, sure, the ocean had some great tunnels and caves and some gorgeous lagoons. But this was hidden away from the eyes of the world, a small place only she and Sly knew about. This was . . . this was special. And the fact he chose to share it with her made it even more so! "It's beautiful . . . This is amazing, absolutely amazing!" She couldn't help it, it was unlike anything she'd ever imagined.

Breathless, she stared up at the walls, watching the light of evening dance amidst the prisms and mist of the warm waters. Slowly, she turned her gaze away and studied her friend, a warm smile firmly painted on her features. "Thank you for bringing me to see this . . . I . . . I couldn't even imagine such a place might exist!"

"It's even better with you here..." He murmured as he watched the way she lit up. He could see that she appreciated the magic of this place the same way he did, she understood it's raw natural beauty. Suddenly he wondered what this cave looked like in the daylight, he had no idea for he had never stayed until morning. Yet now he was struck by a sudden urge to do just that, to stay with Jaile...maybe even sleep though he normally didn't sleep until dawn.

"I'm only to happy to share this with you, you could stay...we could stay...just until morning." He moved to sit close to her and softly nuzzled her ear* "I'll escort you back home in the morning, you'll be safe..." He offered temptingly.
PostPosted: Sat Jun 05, 2010 2:42 pm

Jaile felt her ears warm and her muzzle flush, though she knew it wouldn't be spotted underneath her fur. She averted her gaze from him, a sudden coyness overwhelming her. He always did this . . . made her feel so funny and so beautiful. . . .

Shame on her for getting caught up in such truths. But it was Sly and he would and forever be her knight of the night. He had rescued her so many years ago while she was lost and afraid. . . And he had rescued her once again when she thought her hope had waned. Truly he was an amazing wolf, and somehow she couldn't entirely believe that he chose to spend time with her. . . that he chose to see her as some thing so lovely.

He deserved a beautiful wolfess, dark and alluring. . . She was plain, simple, not at all the elegant beauty she imagined him to desire. Still, she was quite pleased he did choose to be so kind and thoughtful. So when he brought up the thought of staying together through the night. . . . at this beautiful hide away . . .

How could she resist? Her family wouldn't worry, she had planned on being out all night. "Oh Sly, could we?" She asked, her tail wagging a bit faster in excitement. "It would be so lovely. . . here in this darkness. . .amidst the warmth of the water and the crystals of this cave."

As if he needed to beg. Please. Her interest was purely genuine. Giggling softly, unable to help it, she leaned over offered him a very gentle nuzzle against his neck and cheek. "I'd love to stay if . . . if you'd like me to." She still didn't have the confidence she yearned for but she wasn't like Sly. She had always thought a bit poorly of herself, at least when it came to looks, and so she couldn't entirely believe that he WOULD want her to stay all night. Together. Somehow it was just too good a thing to be true. . . .

But oh she could only hope he meant it. Could only hope he wouldn't regret it after a few hours together through the night.

He smiled at the way she nuzzled him her tail wagging set his own into a soft to and fro motion. He couldn't help the pup like gesture and he grinned laying down and rolling onto his back. "It would kill me if you didn't stay." He assured her then chuckled and leapt back up onto all fours. He walked over to her and softly touched his nose with hers his eyes meeting the her soft blue ones.

"Here, we belong together here..." He softly licked her muzzle and then turned to ay down close to where the hot water bubbled up, the steam doing odd things to his fur. "Come, you can sleep...I think I'll enjoy seeing what shade your fur becomes when the suns first rays kiss you." He curled his body to make a perfect nook for her to lay with him.
