Where the heck had he gone?! Did he think this was funny leaving her all by herself? Wait...what if he wasn't coming back this time? What if he'd gotten so fed up with her that he'd just kept walking. Walking...walking...walking and not looking back.
Then she'd be all alone again.
Alone.
The thought was almost too much to bear! But she shoved it away roughly. No, Ahnik wouldn't leave and even if he had, he wouldn't have gone far! But boy oh boy, when he got back she was going to...or wait...maybe she should be careful with what she said. Ahnik wasn't exactly the type of male who would appreciate a lecture and if she pushed her luck a little too far then maybe he would leave and...
She growled, kicking at the dirt. This was way too much stress and she didn't like dealing with stress one little bit! Either way, she didn't want to be alone and if that meant taming down her personality a little then...so be it.
And, for all her faults, Ka had always been true to herself, never hiding or squashing her personality for anyone. But...recently she had begun to wonder whether this was why she had no friends. Maybe this was why she was so alone. No one liked the real Ka so perhaps she should just fall in line like others, and shape herself in the way others wanted to see her.
But that thought hurt her more than anyone could understand.
And then she heard the approaching of paws and her head bolted upright. He was back! But wait...that wasn't just one lion, was it?
Instantly in stalk mode, Ka lowered herself down into pounce position, preparing to attack and run if need be.

Ahnik was in a very good mood since running into Tabia. Though he couldn't explain it to either of his companions now, he was feeling accomplished. It was a lovely feeling, and the first real sign that he had done the right thing in leaving. At least, that was how he saw it. Leaving had been an accomplishment but not in the same way this was. How easy it was to find a female to take back with him was quite the boost for both his ego and his mood. So, cheerful and consciously trying to keep Tabia in a good mood, he did his best to make small talk as the walked-- until he got back to the area he was sure he'd left Ka in and couldn't see her.
"Huh, I wonder were Ka got off to," he muttered, narrowing his eyes and looking around. They were still some distance from where Ka actually was but she was an effective hider.

Tabia, completely unaware of what Ahnik was plotting, was simply overjoyed to be allowed to stay with him and his companion for a while. It beat being alone and she had to admit she already liked his company! A miracle in itself, really, after such a brief meeting. She supposed that sometimes you really just did meet others who you got along with.
"Hmm..." Tabia paused and peeked across his shoulders, eyes scanning the area for any sign of life. The other female's scent was certainly strong here, but that didn't necessarily mean she was here at that moment.
"Maybe she went to find you?"
Ka'ohu heard the voices and crept forwards, knowing now that it was Ahnik and knowing also that he definitely wasn't alone. So who was it then? Who was with her friend? Didn't they realise he was hers? Well, she'd tell them what was what!!
She sprang up suddenly to meet them, huffing and looking less than impressed. Her eyes went straight to glare at Tabia and then they turned slowly to Ahnik, accusing.
"There yoos are. 'Bout time." And then her eyes snapped back to Tabia. Pretty little thing that she was. Ka'ohu was not impressed. "An' who is this?!"

"Maybe," he agreed, "We can wait here for her to show up." He didn't really think it would be any more productive for them to wander away as well, so he got comfortable, sitting down and smiling at Tabia. Just in time for Ka to pop up. He nearly jumped but was quick to recognize that it was only Ka. And while she looked upset, it certainly didn't worry him. She didn't have any reason to be upset that he could imagine except that maybe he was gone longer than he'd expected but really, they were grown ups and he was back.
"I got a little distracted," he explained, shaking his head as Ka tried to stare down Tabia, "This is Tabia, she's new to being a rogue as well. I thought it might be easier for her- and us- to have another body around."
After all, it was easier to hunt, scavenge and stay safe in numbers. He was careful to word it in a way to try and make Ka see it as a positive. He could leave a demonstration of her personality up to Tabia.

Tabia leaned a little closer towards Ahnik, but her eyes did not leave the other female's, too proud to dare do anything but hold that line between their sight. To say that she was surprised would have been an understatement. Despite the fact that she had been told little about this female, she had thought that she would have been a lot like Ahnik himself.
She couldn't have been more wrong!
She was a scruffy, brutish, foul-spoken creature who clearly had no manners towards anyone - even a stranger who had done nothing to offend!
When Ahnik introduced, she forced a smile and dipped her head very slightly. "Nice to meet you, Ka. I...hope I'm not intruding..." When in doubt, bite your tongue and be polite...
"Distracted?" Ka arched a brow and continued to stare into those lilac eyes. "Yeah, ah bet yoos did." She snorted and shook the tangled mass of fur out of her eyes so that she could see them both better.
"Tabia?" She exhaled noisily and curled a lip. "On'y frien's get tah call me, Ka. It's Ka'ohu to yoos." Her hackles bristled momentarily and then she leaned backwards, eyes narrowing just a little.
"More mouths tah feed." She complained, shaking her head to rid herself of an itch. "Ah sorta preferred it jus' bein' the two of us. We dun need no ones help! Ah can scavange a' good a' the bes' of 'em!" She snorted again, mumbling under her breath that Tabia was indeed intruding.

A true reflection of the mood he was in now, Ahnik's reaction to Ka's little tirade was to chuckle and shake his head. He could see she was genuinely upset and he could begin to guess why but he also figured this wasn't something he ought to get upset about if his future was going to work out exactly as he planned. He'd need more than Tabia eventually and disagreements would happen.
"That's no way to treat a guest, Ka," he scolded, though clearly not too concerned with how the scruffy lioness was reacting, "We don't need the help but what about her? And she could feed herself but it's safer in numbers and this is better company. You did say you wanted company."
It was almost out of character but he had a goal, he had to keep Tabia with them now and having Ka on his side was useful when you weren't exactly a talented hunter and might eventually need numbers on your side.
"Don't girls get along better with each other, anyway?"
What did he really know about that? He'd never had any friends but it sounded right. He was just grasping now.

She wrinkled her snout a little at the harsh response she got in return. Already she could tell there would be friction. They would not get on. To look at them was to look at two different sides of a coin. They should never meet. And yet, perhaps a meeker lioness may have declined their offer politely and left. However, Tabia was not meek and she certainly wasn't going to be bested by this unkempt female who couldn't even enunciate her words properly!
"Ka'ohu." She corrected, if a little stiffly.
She looked gratefully towards Ahnik, smiling a little as he reasoned with his...friend. "Ahnik is right, Ka'ohu. There are more mouths to feed, certainly, but more claws in which to hunt that food." She blinked. "As I told Ahnik, I won't be a burden. In return for company and safety I am prepared to hunt as well."
She smiled sweetly then. "I'm sure that's true, Ahnik. I think once we get to know each other, we'll get on fine."
Ka was between getting angry and getting flustered. Ahnik was acting...weird and this female was being infuriatingly reasonable!! Why didn't she at least get insulted and snap back? That was the reaction Ka wanted and it wasn't fair that she should be denied that.
"Ah did..." She agreed after a moment's hesitation. "Guess she can stay, then." Another pause. "Bu' if she dun pull 'er weight, then she's outta 'ere, right?" She turned somewhat pleading eyes to her friend.
And she growled a little. "Girls or boys dun matter much, Ahnik. We get along fine." She sat gruffly and leered at Tabia from beneath the bangs of matter hair.
"How long she gonna be stayin' fer? 'Till she fin's a new home, righ'?"

Well, Tabia clearly had the right attitude! He could see the frustration in Ka, it was something he generally identified with but he had motivation not to sympathize with her this time. He was still having trouble admitting or even recognizing that they were, indeed, friends. He smiled at Tabia, encouraging her effort to be friendly. But he also smiled at Ka when she agreed.
"Fine, fine," he said when she commented on gender, "Then we can all be friends." And he said nothing else, purposefully not addressing when Tabia would leave.

Tabia listened to Ahnik and Ka's banter with a small smile. Such an unlikely pair! She was surprised that Ahnik was able to put up with her. It seemed that this one was not as simple as she had first thought. Or maybe it was simply that alone he would have struggled here and with Ka it was easier, even if she was a brainless fool.
"I'd certainly like that." She added as Ahnik stressed that they should all be friends. "And as for how long I'm staying, I couldn't really say. Perhaps until I find a home I can attach myself too, hmm?"
Her ears lifted. "Are you two planning to stay rogues or are you looking for homes, too? A pride, I mean."
"Fine." Ka practically hissed.
She backed up a little and sat heavily amongst the undergrowth, leaning to one side so that she could stretch a hind leg up to scratch vigorously under her chin. A small twig became untangled from her messy crop of 'hair' and landed at her paws.
But, at Tabia's question the fur along her neck and shoulders stiffened abruptly. And, before she could control it, a growl rumbled in her throat. "Pride? Pride? Ah ain't gonna stay in no pride!" And if questioned why, she wouldn't really have a reason, other than that it scared her somehow.
"We're rogues. Got tha'?"

Tabia expressing interest in finding a home caught Ahnik's attention and he smiled at her, especially since she was continuing to be quite agreeable despite Ka's unusually unfriendly behavior. He looked back at Ka, shaking his head a bit at her. She was certainly different around Tabia, he might always have been annoyed by her but she was always nice to him- it could have been worse.
Deciding it would be best to get comfortable, he lay down on the grass and looked up at the two lionesses.
"Like Ka said," he responded, glancing at Ka first and then turning to Tabia as he continued, "We're rogues." He gave a small shrug, the only indication that he personally was not set on staying a rogue forever. But saying it out loud probably wouldn't make Ka any easier to deal with.
Hmm, there must be something he could do to make it easier.

She nodded, seeming happy with that. Having no idea what Ahnik planned she assumed, then, that she would tag along with them until a pride caught her interest. Then she would part ways and let them get on with their wandering.
"Well I admire you both for remaining as such. I do not have the nerve to stay out in these wild lands without the borders of a pride around me to keep me safe." She smiled, throwing Ka a friendly look.
"Then thank you again. I'm sure our time together, though perhaps short, will be enjoyable."
"Not ev'ryone is cut out tah be a rogue." Ka'ohu replied, seeming to think that she was insulting Tabia by saying so. Then, with a snort, the scruffy female gathered her paws and turned half-way from them.
"I foun' some food." She continued, somewhat uncertainly. "Vultures led me."
And as she stalked off to fetch it, she mumbled to herself that their time together couldn't be short enough.
(( dunno if you wanted to wrap it up in the next couple of posts and then set another rp a few days later where Ahnik tells Tabia his plan? ))

Ahnik only smiled at Tabia, having nothing in particular to add- and then looked to Ka when she tried to insult Tabia, shaking his head at her behavior. He perked up when she said she had found some food. That was, at least, good news. And something else to focus on.
"Very good," he said, moving to follow after Ka, "Let's go, then."

Tabia didn't seem that insulted. In fact, if staying a rogue meant she'd end up looking like Ka, then she was pretty glad that she wasn't 'cut out for it'. She much preferred looking neat and tidy, thanks.
And, returning Ahnik's smile she stood and moved after him, wondering how on earth the following days were going to play out. Such three different characters all relying on one another for food and security. Would it work or would it end up in terrible failure?
And, if it did end up badly?
Well, Tabia certainly wasn't going to get stuck in the middle and she certainly wasn't going to retaliate in the way Ka'ohu wanted her to. Know, she'd remain the calm and reasonable creature she liked to be, knowing that would irritate the scruffy female even more than if she were to fight back.
Yes...the next few days were going to be interesting indeed.
