Vohamanah raised his head from the traveling stream he was drinking from. He felt the spring breeze brush all around his wings. He fluttered them and watching how the sunlight would break through them like light on a prism. He watched the sparkling reflection in the water.
Oh yes. It was that time of year. Vohamanah always loved spring. He loved watching everything come back to life. The valley and plains blanketing themselves in green and flowers again. He was always excited to throw off the longs of winter.
Naturally, with the advent of spring also came his advent of vigor. It was almost this time of year it was that he had met Sohalia. It seemed that this time of year gave him great need of her. With the sunlight bouncing off of his horn, he turned around to go find where it was she was hiding her pretty little self.
More than anything, he wanted to smell her. Nothing was better than the smell of her hair in the spring sunlight.

Sohalia had taken herself back home, a long and emotionally painful journey. She had been accompanied by Shveni, the vixen had brooked no refusal on the matter, sensing that her ebony friend harboured many heart wounds that still had not healed, despite having found a mate and born children. She'd found out through rumour, and Shveni's persistence that the father she'd not know had died, cause unknown.
She had stood at her place of birth, and shed tears. There were no old herd members there, and her cool beauty and closed demeanour bought stares and whispers from those who lived in the area now. She stood where her father's bones now lay and spoke words, feeling the hatred flow from her, speaking her peace as she never could when he was alive. He'd taken it all from her, because of his jealousy for her mother, and although she would never forget, she could forgive him because she had to, the burden was too great to carry any more.
She still had no idea at all of where her mother had taken herself, but for now that was a journey for another time, she had been gone long enough and it was time to rejoin the world and the family she had made. A severely bitter winter had caused a long delay during the journey home, and it was only as the season turned into spring that she was finally in familiar territory.
She wandered to where Vohamanah's mother lived, and where she to sometimes had stayed herself, still unwilling to be tied to one place, she would leave for days on end to be with her own thoughts, always trying to return to her ever loving mate.

Vohamanah let his nose assist his heart in tracking down his beloved. He walked along towards the cavern where she had their foals at. He paused there to stare at it. He would always have to thank some being on high that they might be bound that way. Deep down in a place he'd never admit to; he was always afraid that she'd give in to the darker places of her heart. That she'd just up and run away one day. He would never own up to this fear as it was just too heavy, and Vohamanah was not one to entertain the slightest of possibilities that things would wind up other than how they ought.
He let his nose ripple out as though he could already smell her. Perhaps it was only just his memory of her. The smell of the wind on her hair and the grass around her feet. It had been too long. He had slowly started to be accustomed to her leaving. Everytime she'd disappear, a part of his spirit would feel the only discouraged demeanor he would ever be known to display. Then, she'd come back, and his heart would feel reassured. He would feel his original feeling towards her was correct. She wouldn't just leave him like that, but he would never say anything. Vohamanah was able to realize that she held things inside her heart which she would only share with him when she was ready.
Still, he felt like this time had been extraordinarily long that he was used to her being away for. He hoped she'd be back soon. With such resounding faith in his heart, he galloped on home towards the teepee he'd given his life to. The home of his greater herd. He wasn't often to think she'd go there first, but he could hope.
His heart felt rewarded when he could smell her on the air. 'She has returned', he thought to himself. With his heart beating furiously in his chest, he started wandering all over the campsite looking for her.

His scent was heavy on the air; this being his home it would be, but she couldn't help but think of the irony that she without wings went further afield than her mate. Of course it was probably for the good that she didn't have wings, as when she went off on her own she would have travelled much farther away.
Of course there were greater reasons behind why he stayed and she would leave. Sohalia wondered if he thought that she was unhappy in their relationship - far from it, he and her children were her only bright spots in a dark life. Still, maybe this time she could stay longer, the long trip had closed one door, and there was only the eventual journey to find her mother..but for now she could be that to her children should they have need of her, and reconnect with Vohamanah.
She wandered into the area proper, flicking her black mane from her face, her sapphire eyes catching sight of her mate. He was there as ever, and as she walked to greet him, she hoped he would greet her with affection, even though she had been gone for so very long. Shveni had parted ways with her a while back, she had her own things to tend to.

He turned his head but a quarter to see her approaching him. Vohamanah's eyes filled with irrepressible glee. How wonderful. As she drew closer, her smell was all the more stronger and pugnant. This of course only fed into his desire to try and keep her around a bit longer this time.
His wings folded outwards catchign the sun in them as he turned to hasten this meeting as he walked towards her. "Ah.. my love, my love... Again, you return to me, and the faith in my heart is rekindled with renewed vigor. I had almost begun to fear."
Then, he walked faster up to her. He pressed his nostrils to her neck. He took long whiffs of her skin. He could smell her journey, the wind, the sun, and the trees.
Then, he gave her gentle kisses around her eyes. "Welcome home, Sohalia."

'Fear?' she echoed, allowing him to approach, to bestow affection on her. She did the same tentatively, for it would take a little while for her to relax around him, to be back as she was before she left.
'You think I would do that, leave and never return?' Sohalia looked at him, wondering what she was doing to him, toying with his heart by being distant, not allowing him fully in after all this time and going away for months on end. She loved him but she'd always been broken, unable to be herself because of her past. He deserved so much more from her, and she promised herself right there and then that she would only leave again if he was travelling by her side.
'Thank you.' she replied softly, looking at him steadily.

Vohamanah beheld her for a few quiet moments. He was about to tell her something. It would be a rare moment. Very few ever heard him say anything that wasn't overflowing with nauseating optimism. That was his trademark. This next thing he told her was something a little different. Still, it was true. He needed her to know.
"Yes. You know. You've never complained when you are here, but I know that you haven't always been comfortable with the herd around here. Even when you are here, I do notice your frequent retreats for solitude. I guess down in my heart... I have been afraid I might wake up one day. You'd be gone and not come back. I don't think it'd be because you wanted to leave me personally. Just fear a day when you just become obsessed with needing solitude."
He looked at her with tender, loving eyes. He reigned himself in. He didn't wanna ramble on like some old bat who went on for years about the same thing. However, he just needed to add one last little bit.
"I love you so much Sohalia. I love you enough to accept your need to protect yourself. If ever comes that day which might be my only fear, I wouldn't be angry with you. I would only hope that you would be happy and find serenity. Still, I hope that day never comes. Or, I pray that if it does.. it shouldn't be for a long time."
He then nuzzled her neck with his nose. His wings twitched on the sides of his body as he felt such an overpowering devotion for her. He found it slightly curious that he didn't always feel so emotional over her. Maybe she was just gone longer this time than usual.

'You knew what I was when we met, when we got together.' she reminded him gently, pressing her nose against his neck before looking at him again.
'And yes, it was hard. I couldn't tell you, I kept my true feelings hidden but you obviously realised how much discomfort I felt being around anyone that wasn't you..or our children.' Sohalia sighed, shaking her mane.
'I love you too, even when I'm away. You probably think I don't, no one would blame you for that but I do. It brings me home to you, otherwise I would have done what you feared..gone and never returned.' she said, her voice soft but fraught with emotion.
'For now though, I am here to stay..if that's okay with you..' she asked, looking from under lidded eyes. She would tell him of her father, and how she wanted to one day look for her missing mother but after a time. She had to know how he had been, how their children had been and anything else important that had happened whilst she was away.

Vohamanah nodded his head. His honest heart couldn't deny her words. He knew all of what she said was all too well the truth. He had known it. While mysterious, she hadn't hid her true nature from him really. He regarded that very fact as the greatest guarantee to his heart that she cared about him. Though he hoped deeply that she hadn't overplayed her heart in doing so. He hoped it wouldn't end up one day that she felt like she had given him too much, so that it would cause her heart to withdraw and be even more away from him.
His eyes glistened with delighted adoration for her. "Of course, I want you to stay. I always want you to stay. If you need it, we can go venture and create our own special hiding spot in the forest somewhere. Somewhere that's not too close to either of our herds or families. Someplace your heart and mind can have peace and solitude."
He gently nibbled and sniffed various strands of her hair. Never so hard as to pull. He absorbed her smell, her texture. Then, he put on a big smile and twittered his wings about. His optimistic nature peeking through more brighter.
"And, it's ok, Sohalia. I can appreciate you. You know.. when you love someone; you love them for everything they are. Not just the stuff you like. You love them for all your favorite and unfavorite traits! Even if your need for alone time isn't my favorite thing about you; I certainly don't hate it. How could I ever dislike anythin about you? Your pelt and hair might be dark as the most opaque shadow, but your love for me gives me an unfailing light in my heart."
In the back of his mind, he also felt perhaps he should tell her about the things that had gone on in his family, herd and such. Still, just for a moment longer, he wanted to put if off. He wanted to savor every second she was in his sight.

'I'd like that Voha.' Sohalia replied. She knew that he was a family man and that to tuck himself away from his family wouldn't be natural for him. She appreciated the effort he was making for her. It made her all the more determined to do the same thing for him.
His touch sent tiny little shivers down her neck. She'd missed that; being solitary was what suited her, that would never be denied but a part of her had gotten used to physical affection and so it was comforting and nice to be touched again.
'Neve lost your silver tongue.' she said with a little giggle, relaxing even more. Her guards were almost all the way down, a state that only Vohamanah could induce in the mare.
'You should always have that light.. I don't wish to dull it.'

Voha smiled wide and hard. His light was overflowing. His joy was apparent and unrestrained. He could sense her feelings relaxing. There was no end to how happy it made him to feel it. He then pondered a moment as he gently leaned his head on the lower back of her neck as though he were somewhat hugging her with his head.
"You know... it might be ok anyways. After all, our own family has grown somewhat. Morgan has a mate, and they had a few horses of their own. They are grown now. To my knowledge, neither of those two have even started looking for partners or mates, but that's you and I are two. Then, we have our three, plus morgan's 2. That's seven of us."
Though the mentioning of all this made him think about their children. "It wouldn't be too crowded for you since Quiandiah has long been away on an adventure of her own. Vatsah has remained around somewhat. He does seem to have his own places he likes to go off to. Morgan is sometimes here with the herd and sometimes on the other side of hte lake. As that is where his mate is herded at."
