Sonnet had probably been wandering around for about 2 hours talking to himself. Not that he would ever do so if he thought anyone was around to hear him. He had flown to the foothills of the mountains, thinking that there he wouldn't run into anyone. And here he was talking to himself working out how to go about learning to protect his small family, as well as the few friends he had. "There has to be someone that will teach me... I can't ask Maion he's done so much for me already, beside he would just think it another way to spend more time with Chan... But I don't know anyone else that can fight." The young stallion had grown bigger now, learning to fly had filled out muscles he hadn't known about. And simply getting older had made him taller and more adult, but he was still more foal than grown up.

Sighing as he turned round, pacing back the way he had come, a frown of thought on his young face, clearly trying to work out this problem. Having the drive and instinct to protect but not the means or knowledge to do so. Huffing softly, this moving his fringe, making him toss his head. His hair was getting longer, it was longer than his sisters now. "Dad why did you have to have such long hair..." Grumbling softly to himself, loving his father but he found that at the moment his hair ticked and irritated more than anything.

Turning around again he went back again, a clear path marked out where he had been pacing in the dirt. "Ok, so you don't know anyone to teach you... maybe ask someone you do know... Not that you know many but maybe they can ask others and someone would take me on!" Trying to be optermistic as he mused the options.

Islagiatt territory had been reasonably quiet as of late, with tell tale signs of new children in their midst the atmosphere had been joyous and light. There were no signs of strain or uncertainty and if there had been any doubts laden in the depths of any individuals mind they gave no indication of it. The borderguards and their very opinionated commander had been sated and the agreements that had been made only a few years before had been cemented. There were no arguments and no threats of notes, and if there had been then Sylph Forcas was doing a spectacular job of keeping them at bay. Such was the professional nature of the herd's guardians that Grencia no longer found himself hardpressed to patrol every region of the territory and he was able to grasp every opportunity to potter about and simply enjoy himself.

...He did this often.

Both his mate and he enjoy the moments in which they could share one another's company, and in addition they revelled in the opportunity to peer about for new additions to the herd and new features that may have evaded their notice when their main concern had been security. Alas, his mate had opted to visit her new grandchildren and Grencia had chosen to broaden his horizons just a touch more by touching upon a region he hadn't been present in for many a year - the Lowlands.

The Lowlands were a place that Islagiatt held with very little regard, with soquili that possessed little to no morals, it held very little appeal to the soquili of the slopes. Children came from broken families, said children then had their own children before they had even reached adulthood. It was a vicious spiral but there was little to be done about it when those with morals had left post haste and migrated to more suitable climates. That being said it had always been in Grencia's opinion that time should be invested in at least gaining some kind of familiarity with the individuals who lived close to the borders of his herdlands. A familiar face was easier to discuss with the guards and in turn they were less likely to be confronted if they happened to stray too far - it worked out better for everyone.

It should have come at no surprise to find that the rather vibrant stallion could be found wandering throughout the foothills that morning. Having made his decision he had made quick work of descending the slopes and now shuffled through the grasses. Broad strides cut through the reasonably long grass in swathes and only the faintest ruffle could be heard as his tail feathers occasionally caught upon the blades. The morning had been a quiet one so far, but as he meandered in no particular direction his ears did catch the faint whispers of a voice and swivelled in the direction - he paused (no surprise) and listened for a short while before progressing in the direction it had come from.

"...know anyone... teach you," he furrowed his brow at the unfamiliar voice and threw a disapproving glance towards the spirits who made his eavesdropping so clipped and inaccurate. "...know many - someone would take me on!"

What?

The phoenix shook his head and came to a halt as his emerald gaze finally came to rest on the purple crossbreed that stood in his midst. Pacing back and forth, he seemed not to notice Grencia's immediate presence as the male's head drifted left and right in order to follow the colt's meandering.

"You seem agitated," Grencia broke his cover at last, although this would hardly have been difficult give how bright his plumes were to begin with!

Freezing to the spot when another voice interrupted his not so private monologue, his white and purple face going a pinkish colour in embarassment. Not so much for what he had been saying, he knew he had said nothing that would offend anyone. But more for the fact that he had been caught talking to himself. Peering round slowly to see a very brightly coloured male looking at him. Instantly feeling a kid again, he spun round and started babbling an apology. Not sure why but then he seemed to find trouble so he found it best to apologuise before you were yelled at.

Agitated, mulling the word over in his head as he stopped babbling an apology, not that he had done anything wrong, least he didn't think he had. Looking up at the older stallion, not sure how to answer, he had been agitated in many ways, but then was he properly agitated? He had just been trying to work something out, he just had odd ways of doing that. "Maybe, I suppose... I... I just think better when I can hear the options...." His face still shades of pink, this part embarassment and part guilt. Feeling bad for talking to himself when his sister could not say a word, but then he also felt silly for being caught as the older stallion probably thought he was barking mad now.

"I was weighing up some possibilities, though they were pretty non existent... But I was thinking if I could come up with a plan of action I could make some possibilities appear.... Or something of the like..." Pretty sure he sounded young and foolish, but he was determined to work it out, he had to find a way to protect his father and sisters. That and he wanted to be able to protect Chan too, not that she needed his protection, but he wanted to know he could do it.

Trying hard not to figit as the other stallion looked at him. Still having much of the awkwardness of youth in him as he stood there. His expression a cross between embarassed, determined and sheepish. Not thinking he had explained himself well, though he would take it as a good thing if he wasn't cast off as some mad creature.

Grencia was privvy to a lot of eccentric individuals and if he had had the audacity to claim that talking to oneself indicated insanity then the vast majority of his herd would be stark raving mad. It was a rather frequent occurance to find at least one soquili muttering, chittering or ranting to no one in particular just to get something off their chest. It was completely normal in his eyes, to discuss and voice things with oneself if there was no one else to listen. Consequently, his eyes belied no accusation of insanity or doubt, merely acceptance. Embarassed as the colt was, he had taken the moment to try and explain regardless of whether or not Grencia considered it necessary.

"As you do," he replied simply, his head giving a very slight nod in response to the explanation. The colt had been incredibly vague as to what his exact issue was, but the older stallion had gotten the overall idea. He had been pondering over various options and with no soundboard to voice them off, he had been acting as his own. Grencia could fully appreciate the surprise that he had given the colt, when he hadn't given an answer but had certainly interrupted such a reverie!

"Some of the finest stallions do the very same thing," he added calmly. Ruffling his wings against his sides, he shifted himself into a more balanced and comfortable position. "Perhaps your agitation was a sign that the trees were not providing you with very many potential solutions though - they don't often make good soundboards," he murmured. He paused for a few moments and his head canted to one side in thought, almost as though a voice in his head had begged to differ.

"...Although my mate might disagree with me, she finds that trees are incredibly helpful in her endeavours," he confessed with a hint of a twinkle in his eye at the mere thought of her antics, now she was an eccentric and had Sonnet met her, Grencia sincerely doubted he would have worried about being considered mad at all!

Looking a little relieved that he hadn't seemed mad, he felt awkward enough around others as it was. And that was when they hadn't caught him talking to himself. Trying not to fidgit under the gaze of the stallion, his 4 wings folded though twitching slightly. Though the small wings on his head always gave him away most, right now they were drooping into his mane. Said mane being at some awkward middle ground between foal and adult length, some of his fringe having once again fallen in his face. Tossing his head a little to move it, though this action made him start fidgiting over again.

Thinking that he might have actually have gotten somewhere if the trees could answer, they saw all kinds of things, so were bound to know where he could get help learning to fight and defend. Sighing softly and looking at the nearest tree, clearly pondering actually trying to get an answer from it.

Looking back at the stallion finally, not really sure what else to say, knowing that not all older soquili liked being asked questions, so he was going to avoid that, neither had he really been asked any questions. "My name is Sonnet... sir.... I am pleased to meet you." Giving a small unsteady bow. Trying to be polite and well mannered, though not totally sure what this kind of situation called for. But it usually didn't go badly when you didn't probe with unwanted questions, or ignore any questions that you had been asked. With that thought he ran over what the stallion had said again in his mind, just checking to see if he had missed any questions that would need an answer. Not able to remember any, he offers an unsure smile.

Evidently, subtlety was not something that the younger stallion picked up on. Grencia was not a male who pried into the lives of others, merely provided them with the opening to tell him. Unfortunately, the colt had opted not to open his mouth and the older male was fairly certain it was because he hadn't actually caught the invitation. His expression clouded briefly at this and his lips twisted into a mild grimace, as much as the colt needed his help, he wasn't going to drag his issues out of him by force.

...It just wasn't how Grencia did things.

"Grencia," he replied in response to Sonnet's introduction, nodding to indicate that his sentiments were returned. It was for the best that he didn't sound like a broken record or a mimic so he had no need to repeat the well wishes. That being said, if Sonnet hadn't picked up on his earlier invitation of assistance then maybe he wouldn't get that either? The internal voice within his head gave a small grunt of annoyance and then surrendered to the facts, he'd just have to be direct in that respect.

"A pleasure to meet you also," he added after a few seconds and tilted his head to the side again. A few more minutes passed and then, with a quiet cough, the older stallion opted to save the colt anymore discomfort. There were just some encounters that did not go along smoothly, Grencia had never been great at talking to walls (that was his mate's forte) and consequently he was ill suited to talking to a youngster who preferred not to string many words together.

"Perhaps I shall leave you to your discussion with the trees, my mate swears by them and while they are silent to me, they may be more vocal to yourself," he offered with a neutral smile.

Still looking up at the other stallion he didn't really know what to do. There were really only 2 people he could speak easily to and he had grown up with them both. He even had trouble talking to his dad at times, but that seemed to depend on the company and the subject. But he had a strong feeling that he should go home and broach this subject with someone he knew, though the idea made him nervous, but so did the stallion he was looking up at.

Shifting a little flexing his wings slightly, wishing for the first time ever that he could hear thoughts from more than jsut his sister. Though he would probably not like what her herd so it was a short lived wish. Inclining his head again then giving it a shake he looked around. "I don't think the trees will be of any help to me, I think I'll fly back closer to home and see if assistance can be found there." Bowing again "Excuse me please." Turning to make his way out of the densest of the trees preferring to take off in places that were a little more open now that his wings had grown. Hoping he hadn't seemed rude, feeling ashamed of himself for feeling safer in leaving.

Well, that was that then, wasn't it?

The small smile never left the elder stallion's lips as the colt shifted uncomfortably in his presence. As inviting as the phoenix soquili could be to some, there were others he just didn't appeal to. He could accept that on occasions he was ill suited to the job of counselling or guidance. It was the same for every soquili, even his mate on occasions wouldn't 'fit' with exactly what another individual needed and would have to step down. It wasn't the most pleasant of experiences but he would have been very naive to believe that he could solve all the world's problems... Frankly if he could do that, he'd be a god!

"Then I offer you my best wishes and hope luck smiles on you," he replied, his tone accepting. There was no hint of anger or affront in his tone at the colt's desire to run from him. If Sonnet could find solace in a place closer to home then Grencia would have been the first to encourage him to find it there. "As well as safe travels, watch the air currents this afternoon, they are a touch tetchy," he chuckled softly and gave his own wings a quick flare, unfurling them briefly to examine a few dented and twisted feathers that would need preened. With the exception of these feathers, his wings were perfectly servicable and he could make use of them on the way home - a good bit of news if there was any.

Nevertheless, rather than making the colt feel more awkward by watching him leave, the elder stallion cleared his throat and brought his wings firmly against his side. "I suppose it would not be a bad idea for me to make a move either - I hear good things about these 'coconuts' that the humans have been bringing across on those boats of their's. Seems like a fitting day to investigate," he flashed another smile and proceeded in a direction just off to the left of the colt.

Alas, if he desired to investigate this odd 'milk' then he was more than welcome but at least he wouldn't have to worry about Grencia staring after him. The firey soquili knew how awkward it was to have an audience in uncomfortable situations.

Sonnet paused and looked back. "Same to you as well." Walking on, soon clearing the trees and taking off, soon disappearing into the clouds that drifted overhead.
