I find myself staring at two cards. One of them is Blackmail. The other is Coercion.
Blackmail: B(lack) target opponent reveals three cards. You pick one and discard it.
Coercion: B(lack) 2, target opponent reveals his/her hand. Pick a card and discard it.
Blackmail is cheaper and is harder to counter, but it's basically viewed as a land killer.
Coercion is more expensive, but you get to pick any card. However, it's easier to counter and it can only get rid of a big, expensive card or instant your opponent was saving (not like there's anything wrong with that...)
I'd like them both in my deck, but I can only pick one. OR perhaps I could swap one of my ravenous rats for the other...

I prefer blackmail over coercion just because its more efficient , yeah you dont get to look at the whole hand but you can play blackmail 1st turn and atleast see 3 cards...thats almost half their hand and since its type 2 legal i think its the better choice over coercion...id rather run distress though over them in type 2...

They both have their advancetages Blackmail is first turn. But basically they tell you what they are going to discard becasue they make you choose becasue they show you the cards. But the first turn adavantage is about it.
Coercion is deffantly the better card of the two. ONly becasue you see the whole hand and then you get to pick the card. With the other one you done get teh choice from all the cards.

I prefer Abandon Hope, but it's very condition specific. Great in reanimators though, ditch both yours and their creatures.

Out of the two there, Albern picks Coercion. But, you should focus on cheaper discard through Duress, Ostracize, and Distress (oh, and Hymn of Tourach).

There's no doubt about it, and it's Duress lol
In all seriousness, I'm going for Coercion. With Blackmail, the opponent gets to choose what stays. However, with Coercion, the opponent doesn't really get that chance, and nothing in that current hand stays a secret.
The knowledge of seeing what the most of your opponent's hand is like can be game winning for you, since you can plan out how your opponent could play and work around that.
For me, I like to look at it this way. It's like choosing a spy to gather info on my enemy, but choosing a inexperienced, overly careful one(Blackmail) compared to a spy who is experienced that can be the full picture for me(Coercion).

The advantage of costing 2 less mana is so huge that i would never choose coercion over blackmail. a card is a card, it doesn't matter which one you take, you'll still be a little ahead in tempo after you play blackmail, but when you lose mana, the game completely turns around...turns 2 and 3 are essential in developing the game...you don't want to spend too much mana on something like coercion.

Blackmai is cheaper so I say that one, it'll come in handy if you are getting land-hosed.

I ran a Shared Fate deck in Standard, and I run Corc... The 3 mana one over Blackmail for several reasons:
1) You get to see their WHOLE hand. 2) They can't HIDE singnals 3) You can choose ANY card in their hand.
I also run Distress

Why not use Distress? It basically has the same fuction as Coerceon (except you cant choose land), and it cost 1 mana less. If the deck is mono-black you should be able to pay the BB mana cost.

Distress is good but if you have a two color or more deck it could get complicated.

id rather have distress than either of them, but a first turn discard is really hand and in mono blk, 3 mana is alot so ill have to go with blackmail
