Perhaps it was a horrible idea, but Kean knew that it was something he had to push forward to do. He was alone. He couldn't be alone. It didn't suit him to be alone, and he knew that in the depths of his soul. He stood on the edge of the territory belonging to the Order of the Rose, lifting his nose to take in the scents surrounding him, and felt a slight shiver race down his spine in anticipation. Here I stand, he mused, lightly dragging his paw along the ground as if to taste the texture of it beneath his pads. I can do no other.

And so he went.

Stepping across the boundaries, his eyes alert for a border patrol that might be scurrying about, that might even at this moment be stampeding toward him and demanding that he tell them his business here, Kean followed his nose. He trotted, full of purpose, in the direction where the scent of power and majesty lingered. Fantasia. He'd heard his name often when asking around about this pack, and knew exactly what to look for when seeking him out.

Would luck be with him today? Would he prove himself worthy to carry the name of the Order of the Rose? Kean held his chin a little higher in false pride, just enough to help him pretend that he wasn't worried about this encounter at all. But as he drew closer to the center of the territory with yet no sign of the alpha at all, Kean grew hesitant. He slowed to a stop and looked around carefully, his amethyst eyes gleaming with watchfulness as he dropped his chin to a more submissive stance. Where are you, Fantasia...? Kean mused silently, his tail dropping a bit as well. It was creepy, really. He felt a bit like he was being watched. And here, out in the open, with his fur as brightly colored as it was, he was but a sitting duck. Luck, be with me today.

Kean was quite right in that observation, though it was a tad strange for any wolf to be allowed access to the center of his pack without meeting so much as a single wolf. The barrier surrounding the pack's boundaries allowed only small openings for one wolf at a time, and the thorns were not always easy to navigate for those who were not aware of where their body was placed. Arguable it could happen, given that the land was moderate in size, but . . . strange nonetheless. Fantasia was previous wakening from a small nap he had taken and was just exiting his den of roses when he spotted the stranger.

Now being a level-headed leader, Fanta did not jump to conclusions as to how the male got there. He did not scent blood, nor did the stranger appear to be uneasy. Rather, he appeared . . . anxious about something. Submissive even. These were not the signs of a forced entry, but the alpha kept his wits about him as he stepped forward from his den atop the hill. "You took a tour of my lands I see," he said loud enough for the spotted male to hear him, for currently his back was to Fantasia. "Unmolested even. A rare occurance. Who are you, traveler, and what do you seek?" It was not uncommon for wolves to travel close by and merely be lost after all.

The sudden voice made Kean spin around, every bit of his muscles at attention before he took in the colors and the markings on the wolf, as well as his stance. Fantasia. Immediately, Kean dropped his head and his tail, displaying as much subservience as he could without coming across as an insignificant vagabond, before he risked lifting his head a little to stare at the large wolf. His carriage was ridiculously strong, his chin lifted high and his tail waving high and easily in the wind, and Kean knew in only a moment of observing that he had absolutely no chance against him in a fight. He had so much to learn at his young age, only recently maturing as he had, including the ins and outs of fighting. When you were an only pup, play fighting didn't come very easily to you.

"I meant no disrespect," he said, his voice low and deep as per usual. He purposely attempted to make it more soothing, though he was completely unsure as to whether it would come across uselessly or cheesily. Better to push forth, then, with his agenda and his reason for being here. "My name is Kean, sir. And I seek to join your pack." He was afraid of pushing further without being asked, though it was very tempting to yammer on about how much he respected the idea of the pack, of how he was willing to do almost anything to enter it, even to risk being attacked for venturing this deeply into the territory without being invited.

It was even more tempting to mention how it could only be fate if it made it this far without being caught by a member of the border patrol, how he'd slipped through the thorns without a single scratch to his flesh, how he'd come this far without disturbing a thing. But goodness, if he started talking again he might not stop, and Fantasia might want nothing more than to rip out his vocal cords just to shut him up. And thus Kean slunk back into a subservient position, every muscle of his still tensed in case he suddenly was attacked.

"Then I am a lucky one that is your only purpose," he said, his attempt to lighten the conversation as he gave a half-smile, "for you have witnessed an embarassment to the name of my order to have allowed you so easily through. Be at peace, I have no wish to harm one I have only just met." He scrutinized this Kean with hard to read copper eyes up and down, assessing him as he spoke. "The Order always has a den for those who wish to join its ranks, but which of these do you seek? I am less inclined towards some than I am towards others at this point in time."

Hidden beneath the business-like face, the alpha swore. Had the pack decided to grow lax in the wake of spring's beauty? He would have to address this the next time they had a full member meeting.

He knew that there was a reason that he desired to join this pack. The leader of it seemed so kind and respectful, even when Kean was intruding upon his grounds. There was a certain amount of nobility and gracefulness that flitted off of Fantasia with his every movement, and Kean felt his muscles gradually untensing as his subconscious mind took that in more an more. After all, only a fine leader would run a pack with such a noble purpose. Kean gulped, swallowing the rest of his nerves, and lifted his chin a little higher. While his tail still dangled submissively, it was clear that Kean was not merely a shrinking violet of a female, or some such thing.

Which rank did he wish to join? While Kean was confident that he could quickly become the strongest of warriors, if given the chance, he was wary of pressing for what felt like such a high, respected rank. If his vision of this pack was true, they valued their chivalrous warriors highly, and Kean was almost utterly confident that he could not compare to any of them at the moment. Thus, he thought for a moment before speaking again, his voice still soft and low. "I would merely like to enter as a citizen, sir, if you would have me," he stated, nodding in decision. "Perhaps one day, if I find favor here, I shall be worthy of something higher. But I fear pressing now."

Well. At least he felt like he could be honest at the moment. That was a good sign that his fear was creeping away, that he felt like this wolf was trustworthy. There was a vague pressing in the back of his mind, reminding him that this could be a complete lie and a mistake and that he'd be seized in a moment and his throat ripped out, but until he saw or felt something negative, there was no reason that he should be so paranoid. If anything, it would just be an insult to the wolf standing before him.

A citizen, was it? Innumerable they might grow, yes, as anyone could become a citizen . . . but though not a dishonorable rank, it was not what needed to fill The Order's family now. "Favor enough is not what it takes to become more here," he said after a small pause in contemplation of Kean's words, "but strength to endure, hard work, and training. While on any other occassion I would simply agree to your request, Kean, I find myself needing more capable paws to run this land. A pack can be populated by citizens certainly, but who will it fall to to defend them when neccessary?" A rhetorical question, but Fantasia paused nonetheless as if given a silent answer.

"I will not dissuade you from your choice, though let it be known that soon enough I might ask of you take on greater burdens than that of a citizen," the alpha went on candidly. "For I may have warriors to command but very few to ask to man the barriers. You seem a proud wolf for all your submission, Kean. Have you any aspirations here?"
