Writing a Synopsis

Writers' & Artists' Yearbook 2009
A synopsis should be an outline of what kind of book you are writing, it is not your chance to give a detailed listing of what is in each chapter.

A synopsis is a shortened statement or outline of your story.
A synopsis is often requested before submitting your manuscript to an agent or publisher so it is important that you learn to write a really good synopsis to grab their interest!

For this contest you can either pick a story of your own (if you know the complete story, whether it's actually finished or not) or pick a book you really enjoy.

suite101.com
How to Write a Novel Synopsis

There are four key points to keep in mind when writing a synopsis.

1. It should always be written in the present tense.
2. It should cover all the plot points and turning points, including the ending.
3. It should be concise.
4. It should be just as well written as the novel.

The synopsis is intended to represent the story in a short summary to the agent. Therefore, the characters, setting, and all the plot points are included. Agents don’t want to see a synopsis that doesn’t include the ending. They want to know how the author ties all the points together and ends the story.

Google is a great tool to find samples of successful synopses as well as guides on how best to structure them.

Closing date: 17 April 1 May 2010
Main prize: 50,000g (i will be requesting the help of a couple of the guild mods to judge the best examples) - there may also be extra gifts depending on how many people enter and what goods I have available biggrin

I would prefer to recieve entries via PM (please put 'guild contest' in the subject) but I'd recommend posting them too so everyone can learn from each other <3

nb/ synopses will be marked as such:
Quote:
Up to 3 points for how well it reads (as in, 'is it interesting?')
Up to 3 points for grammer/spelling/punctuation
Up to 3 points for structure (is it well laid out)
Up to 3 points for overall impression (does it cover main points, would you want to publish etc)

If you're a mod of this guild and want to help judge - PM me please biggrin

I will ask anyone participating in the judgement to add any advice on how to improve the synopsis and will post that after the contest is over. I think, in order to protect judges anonimity, I won't post a list of scores but I will post each piece with at least a basic critique and any comments judges leave on it.

nb/ i also have short story contest in writing forum

Just a note: i'm no expert on these things I've just read a lot of guides so I'm curious how other people will present them! biggrin

Quote:
Synopsis

• Place contact information and the authors name in the top left corner of the first page, and list the story genre and wordcount, along with the word "synopsis" in the top right corner.
• Use a 1 inch margin on all sides.
• Insert the story title approximately one third of the way down the first page and centre it.
• Start the synopsis summary three to four lines below the title.
• The text throughout the synopsis should be double-spaced, unless otherwise stated by an agent or publisher in the submission guideline.
• Do not number the first page. From the second page onwards, place page numbers in the top right corner on the same line as the header.
• The header on each page after the first, should contain the author's name, the story title and the word synopsis.
• The synopsis text from the second page onwards, should start approximately three lines below the header.
• When a character is mentioned for the first time , capitalize the name.
General Synopsis Rules
There are many different ideas, on how the perfect synopsis of manuscript should be written, following these basic rules should make the process a little easier.
• An ideal synopsis should be approximately 2 - 5 pages long.
• Express it in third person, present tense, regardless of how the story is written.
• The first 3 - 4 paragraphs need to be deliberately engaging, this should compel the reader to read on.
• Try to portray the tone of the story into the text, if the story is dark, then so should the synopsis.
• Introduce the main character first.
• Only include the main character and central characters, leave out any others.
• Include character motivations, and important factors to do with the main and/or central characters.
• Highlight the main plot points, but leave out subplots unless they are directly linked to the main plot.
• Leave out rhetorical questions.
• Use of dialogue should be kept to a minimum, do not inject long sections of dialogue into a synopsis.
• Always reveal the ending.

A book synopsis is simply a very short description of the main theme of a nonfiction work. The synopsis deals with the novel’s central characters, their conflicts and their relationships. However, it does not get into any subplots unless they directly affect the central plot.
The book synopsis is typically used by editors to determine if they want to work with a new (or seasoned) author. Though editors (and agents) will probably read a sample chapter or two of a novel first, they’ll then want to skim the synopsis to get a feel for the whole work.
Note: If you’re having difficulty visualizing this definition of a synopsis, consider that the synopsis is acting in lieu of a book jacket or marketing device. Consequently, your synopsis should be action-oriented, written in the present tense and interesting enough to cause someone to say to him- or herself, “I have to read this book!”

Oh mannnnnnn~! heart

I would LOVE to enter this contest, but don't consider it official just yet, okay? The truth is that I'm in the middle of another contest already (not 24ko's; it's being held in another Guild) and I also have an upcoming trip to Vegas around that time; during which I will most likely not be online at all. However, the prompt for this contest seems easy enough, so I'll spend today giving it some thought and then I'll get back to you tomorrow, okay? heart

Question: Fanfiction counts, right? I have a completed story that I could play with... (I feel weird about using one of my unfinished projects for this contest simply because it's unfinished... I'm strange, I know. xd )

SO. MANY. COMPETITIONS. biggrin

Hahah, I'm still giving the synopsis debate some thought, but it sounds relatively simple, especially knowing that I can use anything for the synop. And I'll give your short story contest a lookover and see if I want to enter that, too! xd

My heart wants to give everything a GO, but I need to make sure I don't go overboard, too! sweatdrop

[off topic]You know how I was talking about Scarlet Mist? Yeah, hoping the other competition that I'm already in will grant me one. Of course, knowing that there are other competitions popping up with such high gold prizes is proving to be SUCH an incentivvve~[/off topic]

I WILL HAVE AN OFFICIAL ANSWER BY TONIGHT, I SWEAR! xd

OKAY. I'VE DECIDED.

I SHALL ENTER.

(Also also, I'll be checking out your short story contest in the forums; I'll leave my answer regarding that contest there.)

there'll be plenty of time for more contests too even if you don't get chance to enter this one.

I think the synop will definately be worth a go if you're into the idea of submitting a piece for publishing at some point - everything's worth practicing to make sure you do it right biggrin

Oh, most definitely~! heart Working on synops is absolutely something I've been needing to do. Taking part in this particular contest will help get me in gear, I think! whee
