((LMAO I broke Trine's virginity as well))

V'tur was out at the feeding pens watching his brown, Iweith take down a wherrie buck. His brown was quick in choosing his victim and ate with an efficiency that impressed his rider. V'tur was not a young man nor was he grayed as some others might be... Instead, he bided his time waiting for his time to fly Thread... If it were to ever come during his life time.

Speaking of his lifetime, shouldn't there be a Candidate he was supposed to be setting to task? He tried to remember the name but it was not really his place to remember everyone who was assigned duty to him.

Does this mean I get an extra good scrubbing? Iweith asked as he swallowed the last of the wherrie.

"We shall see, my brown beast. Make sure you fill your belly. We are in rotation again for meals." V'tur was a by the book man. It took drastic measure for him to break the rules.

Branys ran with an urgency that seemed to make people move out of his way. He was late. Late! And on an assignment to a rider... That certainly wouldn't look good at all! It had been the highlight of his day, to be assigned to task with a rider, instead of doing the same old drudge work that he usually did. He wasn't really fit for it - or rather, built for it. Scrubbing the floors of narrow halls, or helping out in a crowded, bustling kitchen at his size ended up being more trouble than anything else. Especially when he'd manage to wedge himself into a hallway, expecting it to be wider than it actually was. It was nothing that he couldn't get out of himself, but it still made him feel like a dimglow... Regardless, he'd rather be repairing roofs or something of the sort. Frantically, he shook the thought from his head as he broke out into sunlight and jogged toward the feeding pens. He was glad it was nice out, and that it didn't look like it was going to rain...

As he approached the pens, there were a few riders there, their dragons picking wherries and eating them not far away, but he knew who he had been assigned to. He was lucky to have a relatively good memory for faces and names.

He slowed as he approached the brown rider, and introduced himself while trying to catch his breath, though that didn't take too many deep breaths. "I'm Branys," he said, trying not to sound as thrilled as he was to be helping out a brown rider. "I was the one assigned to help you out today."

V'tur looked over the boy and merely nodded. The boy was not so late that it was an insult to his dragon or the job he had been assigned. It was not often that he was asked by his wingleader to assist in training for the candidates or the weyrlings. Not that he minded, V'tur was a patient man at times who did things the way his leaders wanted them done.

But the sight of children, especially young ones often depressed the brown rider. But, this was no young boy before him but a youth stepping into the realm of manhood.

Iweith stepped up and looked Branys over. His blue green eyes seemed to take in every little hair of the one assigned to them for the day. He seems okay. He reminds me of you. My weyr needs cleaning and my hide itches.

"I am sure you have learned in lessons about dragon anatomy and care. Today, I will teach you those things hands on. We will also go over the proper way to care for your gear and why checking it is so important. You can ask me or Iweith any questions and we shall do our best to answer them."

Branys knew that the chores he would be doing would be... messy. The things that all riders need to deal with but would much rather get out of, if at all possible. Candidates were often that way out. However, it was always with excitement that these assignments were received. Sure, the work was less than desirable, but it gave them a look into what being a rider was like, and give them the opportunity to develop a working relationship with another rider, if they happened to get that far. Candidates valued this opportunity greatly indeed, and Branys knew what he had been given.

When the brown approached him, Branys flinched inwardly, but didn't let it show. He was more surprised by the size of him, rather than scared, and certainly did not expect to be approached. It took much of his will not to touch the brown - he revered them as his favorite color, though kept that preference hidden to all but himself. Besides, were I to Impress any other color, I would be just as excited. Color is not important... The mental kick made him realize that V'tur had spoken, and he had not responded.

"Thank you," he said, forcing a charming grin to his face - not that he was trying to make it charming. He had just gotten into the habit of smiling in that way. "I've never worked with a rider before," he admitted, rubbing his right arm nervously. No use letting his man expect too much of him...

"Our first task is to check Iweith over for dry patches. I will show you the most vulnerable parts on a dragon for dry skin and sores. Some riders like their straps so tight that though you can't choke a dragon, you can cut their flesh slightly. The only time an injured dragon should go between is when they have Thread on them." V'tur lectured. He motioned for Iweith to lay down. The brown rider then stepped over to his dragon and onto his forearm.

"Your dragon, should you ever Impress is your life. Don't ever forget it. He will care for you and you will care for him. Dry patches can be avoided by oiling every other day or every day depending on the dragon. The worst spots are where the neck meets the shoulders, the wing joints and sometimes the bends of the legs."

Iweith obliged his rider and moved to show the boy where V'tur was talking about on his body.

Branys watched carefully, forcing down his amazement and easing into the comfort of being a Candidate again. He watched carefully as Iweith displayed the places about which V'tur spoke, and Branys listened intently, set on missing not even the smallest of details.

He felt like he should respond in some way, but couldn't really think of anything - his explanation was thorough, and Branys wasn't exactly new to a Weyr or anything. It wasn't as if dragons were completely foreign things to him... "I see," he said, feeling stupid the moment he said it - and he wasn't exactly the self-deprecating type. "So then, do we oil their whole body regardless? I mean, whether they have dry spots or not..."

"I guess it depends on the rider. I say oil the whole dragon to make sure you don't miss any spots that aren't itching yet. But others may just only oil the dry spots. Guess that is between the rider and the dragon." V'tur replied in a thoughtful voice.

Iweith did not have on riding gear at the moment. His eyes, a cool blue green, swirled at a slow pace. He moved his wings and neck so that the boy could see all the little spots that he could not but V'tur could and did. When do we get to the actual oiling part?

Pulling a small jar of oil from inside his riding jacket and held it out to Branys. He grabbed a rag from the same mysterious pocket and handed that over as well. This should be fun. He would let the boy do both wing joints and maybe near Iweith's head knobs before he made him attempt to put on his saddle and straps. "Go ahead. Make sure when you climb, you use his knee and pull up at the shoulder. Don't worry, you can't hurt him. Oil the wing joints and then his head."

Branys watched him produce the oiling materials and felt his heart jump. Don't be stupid though. Just calmly take the stuff and do it. It's not your first time touching a dragon. With the not-so-inspiring thought in his head, her took the proffered materials and moved closer to Iweith. He carefully climbed up on to his knee, supporting himself against the dragon's body, and opened the oil, dipping the rag in carefully before looking up slightly at the wing joint. Just rub it on. Rub it on! It's not that hard.

Again, not feeling all too encouraged by himself, Branys balanced the jar of oil in the crook of one elbow, running his hand over the joint to feel the dry spots out before taking the oil back in his hand and rubbing the patches with the cloth. See? That's not so hard.

Iweith stayed very still so as not to spook the Candidate. He honestly loved working with others and anytime he could make his shine, he did not hesitate to volunteer the two of them to their Wing Leader or Second. He watched as the boy climbed up, he could feel the shake in his body, and started rubbing the oil in.

Tell him to rub harder. It is itchy. Do not be afraid to dig into the muscle.
Iweith commanded his rider. Closing his outer eyelids, he decided he liked his having extra hands. Oh so carefully, he settled himself into a more comfortable position.

"Iweith said to go ahead and rub him harder. He likes to feel it deep down. Make sure you don't leave any residue on the hide. It could cause the straps to slip. Every drop needs to be used." V'tur walked around, looking at his dragon and the boy pleased with them both.

Branys worked hard, altering his method at the rider's command. Obviously he knew better than Branys did! Everytime he finshed a spot he passed his clean hand over it to make sure there was no oil left on the surface. If there was he rubbed his hand on his pants and brought the rag back to the spot. There was something methodical and calming about the process - he always wondered if riders found oiling the beasts exhausting or difficult. He could only imagine what it was like with the dragon's presence in their mind, if he felt like this doing it for someone else's dragon...

Once he had finished the joints, it was time for the head. Was he supposed to climb up to his back? Or did he know to lower his head to get there? He didn't want to climb up unwelcomed...

Deciding to avoid the situation for now entirely, he climbed down and moved to the other side to take care of the joints over there. He'd save the head for last...

Why not ask the boy what he knows? I am getting bored and if I am, I am sure he is. Iweith opened his eyes and twisted to look at the boy again. He was, just like his rider, one for details and making sure everything was just so.

V'tur nodded in agreement with his brown and moved so that he could be in direct eye contact with Branys. "Okay boy. What have you learned so far in lessons? That way I am not repeating myself. Once the joints are done, we can go over more about dragon care or talk about rider gear."
PostPosted: Wed May 19, 2010 10:49 pm

Still working, Branys spoke to the rider over his shoulder. He didn't want to be disrespectful, but he also didn't want to stop working. "We talked a lot about dragon care, from hatchling to adult, and how to make sure we oil them enough and everything." He repeated it with learned boredom, though he tried to make it sound as interesting as possible. It was just that he had heard about it so much, having grown up in the Weyr and been learning about dragon care and such since he was old enough to go to lessons. "We've talked some about rider gear, but only what the stuff is. I think we learn more about that once - well, if we become Junior Weyrlings."

He finished these joints much faster than the other side, and stepped down from his knee carefully. "Did I miss anywhere?"

"Nope. You did just fine, young man. I can tell you one thing, you will never learn enough about dragon care even when you think you know everything. Iweith and I have been together for over a decade now and he still manages to surprise me" V'tur told Branys with a knowing nod.

Iweith sat up and stretched, if one could imagine a giant feline with extra large teeth, claws and wings stretching. You can let him know that when he Impresses, he will have to learn how to take care of his dragon's cuts and injuries. And cut up meat. Hope he is not squeamish.

"Why not tell him yourself, Iweith?" V'tur gave them both a wry grin.

Turning to the boy, Iweith opened his mouth in a draconic smile. Hello there.
