Life was thrumming and thriving every which way you looked today. From the squirrels racing across the vibrant green park to the mighty elms whose buds where just waiting to burst and bask their leafy appendages towards the beaming sun above. Surely this day of days was one poets wrote about and singers sung about. And yet...Cordelia was not allowed to enjoy it. How unfair!

Of course if the snake really wanted to, she could easily break off from her woman's single minded track towards the piano store, but had to admit...she was rather curious to see this place. Originally Delia had thought it to be a place that only sold pianos and thus didn't really understand the need to go there since they already had one. Yet Ebby had set the girl straight and explained that it had more than just pianos, that it held a broad variety of instruments as well as other music related items. She wanted to witness the subject of the other instruments since the only one the basilisk had ever been really exposed to was the slick, black percussion sitting in their living room.

A sour look crossed her face as they came upon the store and entered. It wasn't because she was upset by the view of the inside, it was because of the memories of Ebony trying to teach her how to play the instrument. Unlike her reading and writing which were coming along quite swimmingly, learning the piano was becoming a troublesome endeavor. For some reason, Delia just couldn't get her fingers to glide across the keys like her guardian's did. And all those notes! It was hard to remember which one was which or at least it was hard for her to keep track while trying to play even the simplest of songs. Apparently, Cordelia just didn't have the patience for it, or perhaps she just didn't have the talent.

"You remember the rules Cordelia?" Her guardian asked in those flowing British tones, stopping to view her ward expectantly.

The dark Frei sighed and parroted the same line her human had told her a billion times before. "I'll be mindful while in here and I won't leave the store without you."

Satisfied with the answer, Ebony gave a simple nod of her lilac colored head before heading off towards the counter at the back of the store, leaving the Raevan to browse about on her own.

Pausing just in the shade of a small alley, Melisande folded her hands over her stomach and sighed. She was full of butterflies, and the uncertainty was obvious on her delicate features. Not only was she still on her own, without Aki, but she was feeling rather...exposed.

Her ribbon trembled at the thought, shivering in its spiral. The Sigel had never gone out in public without a full length skirt before. It was obvious she didn't belong, people had been staring ever since she left Viola's thrift store. Her outfit was fine, Vi had said. Pasha was wearing a crimson ruffled child's skirt like a tube top, belted just below her modest chest. With her hair pinned up in a mess of curls behind her head, that left her neck, shoulders, and slender arms completely bare. Bare, except for the little black fingerless bicycle gloves that didn't even quite cover the backs of her hands. Brilliant red lipstick, a little brighter than the home made top, completed her look. None of this helped her feel any better about having her ribbon exposed, though. Now everyone that looked at her would know she was different, that she didn't belong.

Taking a trembling breath, the muse tried to find her courage before she drifted back out onto the street. As she feared, the reaction was immediate. Some people murmured as they passed her, and others stopped entirely. Blushing furiously, Melisande snapped her wings, propelling herself away. She liked attention...just not this kind of attention!

Was her ribbon really so outlandish? As soon as she'd left the spectators behind, Pasha slowed and peeked at her reflection in a shop window. She wasn't used to seeing herself in such bold colors, or with her hair back. The change didn't bother her...tomorrow was another day, and another outfit! But the ribbon would never change. It made her different, unique...

As soon as the word 'unique' crossed her mind, a flicker caught her gaze. Blue eyes wide, Melisande spun, staring out at the street behind her. There was nothing there. Confused, she looked both ways, wings flicking in irritation. She'd seen another ribbon in the reflection, just like hers, but dark! Excitement faded slowly as she turned back. It would have been nice to see someone else like her, she realized. She was more than a little homesick, and she missed her friends. Zavier, Sevvie, Lucia...even Rivener's company sounded better than nothing! That thought shocked her, and Melisande laughed at herself in the reflection of the shop window. Really, she must be lonely if she missed Rivener!

A tiny, fluffy cloud drifted in front of the sun, and suddenly, Melisande's vision changed. The glare on the window faded, her reflection with it, and the inside of the shop came into view. Her lips parted silently as she stared.

Instruments! Not only instruments, but all manner of musical goods! It wasn't the stock that so captured her attention, though. The flicker of the ribbon she'd seen before...it hadn't been her imagination! There was...someone like her! In the shop! Pasha's eyes traveled over the dark figure hungrily, despite the warning in the back of her mind. Dangerous, said the whisper, as she noted the sharp wings and slinky ribbon. Pasha shook her head, as though shaking free of the thought.

The bell overhead chimed as she pushed in through the glass door. Her cheeks were still a little pink, from the blushing and from the sun, but Melisande didn't feel nervous anymore. She felt like she was about to meet a new friend, and the idea inspired her.

"Hello~?" She called softly, voice high and sweet. "I...don't know you!" In truth, Melisande didn't even know if the figure was male or female until it turned, but that didn't bother her in the slightest. Her voice rang with clear sincerity when she spoke again.

"But I'd like to!"

With Ebony in the back speaking with a salesman about getting her piano brought in for a long overdue tuning and maintenance, Cordelia was pretty much free to do as she wished. Slowly she floated through the open aisles with all the different kinds of instruments. There were these shiny golden ones with a long U-shaped tube jutting out from them and then there were these slender, silver pipes with many tabbed holes in them. It was all so fascinating! They were all so different from one another and even more so from the piano she was use to.

But what had really caught her smokey gaze was a family of wooden instruments lining up across the far wall. They were all so beautiful with their perfectly lacquered and polished surfaces. And the way the shapes of their bodies seemed to resemble the flowing curves of a snake...well it was very attractive to the basilisk. She was just about to break one of her guardian's biggest rules when it came to being inside a store like this, where everything looked so much more fragile than she, yet Cordelia just couldn't help herself. She just had to pluck that string! She had to hear what kind of sound it made!

As her hand hovered mere inches from one of the violins hanging on the wall, a voice made her stop. It was a lovely voice filled with lyrical grace, much like that of a wind chime blowing in the breeze. Cordelia turned to see whom was addressing her and her jaw dropped. It wasn't just because she'd never meet someone as angelically beautiful as this girl was, but because the other was like her and yet not. This Raevan had more of a body! The first female of her kind that she'd seen as such.

Dark lips pulling into a bright smile of her own, Cordelia greeted the other enthusiastically. "Ello! You're so...so pretty! And you're bigger! Like Lazarus or Rivener!" A childish giggle left her as she was beyond being able to contain her excitement either. "I'd like to know you too! I'm Cordelia, but you can call me Delia. What's your name?"

Cordelia's kind words were like music to her ears. Melisande brightened, and the store around her seemed to brighten as well...or perhaps it was simply the sun emerging again from behind the little cloud. Either way, the Sigel seemed to sparkle. "Delia!" She breathed the word, trying out the new name. She was excited that Cordelia was not only willing to talk to her, she was friendly! The little part of Pasha's mind that had been encouraging caution fell silent.

"My name is Pasha!" She was still more comfortable with her nickname, for the time being. Perhaps Aki had put out word that she was looking for 'Melisande', and Meli didn't want to be found. Easily distracted by the compliment, Pasha did a quick twirl. "Oh, I think you are, too! You think my clothes are pretty? I dress myself, now!" The babydoll shirt flared up as she spun, showing a low peek of Pasha's stomach.

"It's nice to meet you! Are you shopping for one of these?" Melisande motioned to the violins behind Delia, voice dipping a bit almost reverently. All the instruments looked so lovely, arranged and displayed and polished, that Pasha couldn't help but admire them. She couldn't help but admire the other Raevan, as well! The girl was striking, with her dark shadowed eyes and unusual wings. One of the blossoms tucked into Meli's curls unfurled slightly as she smiled, turning her attention back to Cordelia.

"Pasha!" she replied in like, her dark lips silently mulling over the name a few more times before she decided that she liked it. Somehow it seemed to fit the blonde, perfectly posh and feminine.

When asked about the outfit the other girl wore, Cordelia wasn't quite sure what to say. It wasn't that her clothes were strange or horrible, just the opposite. It was that the snake had never delved that far into the realm of fashion. Other than how warm or green something was, Delia hadn't given it much thought. Grey eyes took in the look of the female Sigel before her now and thought perhaps she ought to reconsider.

Nodding with a beaming smile attached, "Yes I do. You dress well. Maybe I should too." For whatever reasons, the basilisk's mind had already been daydreaming about some things in her closest and trying to match them into something as remotely interesting as what the muse was wearing now. Oh! And she had that absolutely gorgeous hair comb Lazarus had gifted her. Surely with that added brilliance any outfit could shine!

Suddenly the other shook her dark locks in confusion. The Frei wondered were those thoughts and feelings had come from being as she'd never had them before in her relatively short life. Cordeia was not one to be overtly girly, even if she was sweet and adorable to an extent. Yet being around Pasha now made her want to show off a bit, made her yearn to be recognized for her beauty as well. How strange?

"Uh...huh?" she asked not sure what they were talking about now due to her little fashion distraction. Scaled eyes followed the girl's gesture towards the wall once more and was immediately reminded of her previous curiosity. "Oh yes! I mean...we're not here for these no. My guardian came about her piano, but these are beautiful too. I wanted to..." The snake trailed off as she carefully reached a slender finger towards a single string. Oh so delicately, Delia plucked it, producing a low, short hum from the instrument. The sound made her happy and another girlish giggle escaped her.

"Oh, I like how you are dressed!" Melisande exclaimed, and touched Delia's sleeve gently. "You have a neat style!" It was a lot of black for Pasha's taste, but it seemed to suit Cordelia very well. She was feeling brave just for wearing the little black bicycle gloves that Vi had picked out. Wearing all dark colors, like Cordelia, would make her feel downright daring!

Her attention was captured as well by the pluck of the violin string. It sang in an even, resonant voice that made the butterflies in her stir again. Meli held her breath until the note vanished, and then giggled with her new acquaintance. "That sounds just as pretty as a piano, I think." Leaning forward a bit, lowering her voice conspiratorially, the muse whispered in Cordelia's ear. Her sweet breath stirred the girl's dark locks as she spoke.

"Do you want to play it? I don't think anyone will mind!"

Disagreeing to the gracious compliment, Delia shook her head. Yes she liked her birth clothes as much as the Sigel, but they lacked color. Most especially green, her favorite color of all. Now Pasha...Pasha had a vibrant flare provided mostly by the ruby red of her top. Some would think it clashed with her pale blonde hair and sky blue eyes, but Cordelia felt it only helped to accentuate them.

After the string's graceful note had faded, the basilisk was desperately wanting to strum the lovely instrument again, yet was hesitant of being reprimanded for touching when she most likely wasn't allowed to. It never occurred to her that in a store such as this, touching was highly encouraged and even recommended. Thus Delia floated there swaying from side to side, her smokey ribbon dancing about like a snake as she bit her bottom lip in dire indecision.

"Do you want to play it? I don't think anyone will mind!"

The muse's voice was delightfully angelic sounding in that exact moment and the soft, floral scent wafting from her was oddly therapeutic. Cordelia felt her whole body relax as her silver eyes pooled into a hazy trance like state.

"I would." she breathed before confidently taking up one of the violins. Delicately, the basilisk placed the instrument in the crook of her neck and shoulder. Slowly, she held its accompanying bow to it, hovering mere inches from the strings that seemed to be begging Cordelia to strum them now. Something she soon obliged to.

The sound started out slow and somewhat awkward, yet as time passed it began to even out and pick up pace. The same fingers that wouldn't willingly glide across the keys of a piano as easily, were somehow magically moving so nimbly over the violin's strings now, as if someone else were guiding them. Soon the melancholic melody gained volume as Cordelia closed her scaled eyes, losing herself to the music altogether.

Drifting back just a few feet, Pasha watched as Cordelia reached eagerly for the instrument. The butterflies in her tummy had doubled, filling her with an excited fluttering that Melisande could barely contain. It was just so wonderful, the way life could change so swiftly. She'd gone from feeling alone and judged to this private, thrilling little world in just minutes. The very moment Delia touched the bow to the strings, Pasha's eyes fluttered closed. She didn't want this feeling to end!

The first few notes were squeaky and uncertain, like the first steps of a newborn foal. Opening just one eye, the muse smiled, watching the other Raevan play. Don't give up! You can do it! she whispered, but only her lips moved. Melisande didn't speak. Instead, she closed her eyes again and swayed gently, finding the thread of passion in the blossoming tune and following it with her motion. As the music swelled, Meli shivered, and her curls slipped loose from their pins.

Pasha's head rolled back slowly, hair falling in a canopy of wild waves over her bare shoulders as she listened. Cordeila had such a gentle, soulful touch...listening to her play was liberating. The notes were not perfect, some rough or uneven or slightly out of time. But the way they fit together seemed almost like a reflection of the Raevan herself. Dark and lovely, raw and sensuous.

Melisande's lips parted, and she exhaled, Delia's tune upon her breath. Her hand had found its way to the Frei's back, resting feather light between her dangerous wings as she listened, wrapped up in the music.

"Cordelia..."

The voice was so unexpected then that it made the basilisk break from her reverie with a jump. This caused the bow to slide far off target, a high pitched screech emitting from the strings before several of them broke from the pressure.

"Oh no!" Cordelia gasped as she witnessed the ruined violin. Like a crook caught red handed, the Frei hurried to apologize to her guardian. Tears welling up in those smokey orbs, "I'm so sorry Ebby! I didn't mean...I just..." Her voice trailed off into a small hysteria of sobs as she held the instrument out to her woman, ashamed.

Ebony blinked her own grey eyes in confusion at the quick unraveling of her charge. Had she really sounded that stern? The Brit hadn't thought so, but maybe. Everyone in the store had stopped what they were doing when the most beautiful of sounds had reached their ears. She'd just been rather surprised to find it was Cordelia!

Taking the violin from the young Raevan with a soft smile, "It's okay Dove. We can get it re-strung and it'll be good as new, you'll see. In the meantime, perhaps you'd like to introduce me to your new friend here?" Ebony motioned a lavender head towards the Sigel, the first female one she'd ever encountered thus far.

"R-really?" Delia sniffled, a small smile starting to develop on her lips. Well that certainly made her feel better! She wouldn't know what she'd do if she'd permanently ruined the instrument. Dragging the back of her black sleeves across her face, Delia quickly tried to rid the evidence of her having cried at all. "Oh! Ebby this Pasha! Pasha, this my Ebby!"

Melisande started at the voice (and the breaking strings) as well, lurching almost a full foot higher into the air like a startled cat. Wings furled, Pasha floated slowly back down to her normal height. Her heart was pounding in her chest, cheeks still a bit pink.

"Ebby? It's a pleasure to meet you!" Her voice was sweet and steady, even if she was still a bit unsettled. Melisande offered one hand politely forward, her smile dimpling. The muse was rather proud of how well she hid her sudden sadness...there was a time when she'd introduced Aki as 'my Aki' as well. "Are you the one that taught Delia to play?"
PostPosted: Fri Apr 09, 2010 7:03 pm

"Ebony." she corrected the blonde with a wrinkle of her nose at the aforementioned nickname before taking the offered hand into a professional handshake. "It's a pleasure to meet you as well Pasha. And no, not the violin. I've been teaching Cordelia the piano, but she's..." The Brit bit her lip. It wasn't that her charge couldn't play the instrument persay, it was that she wasn't very good at learning even the simple basics. So it was a surprise to see her able to play the string with such fluid ease. "She's just not experienced enough yet."

Turning back to her ward, "Cordelia dear, where'd you learn to play this instrument?" A manicured nail lightly tapped the wood of the damaged violin in her hands. Maybe someone had taught her along the way and she hadn't been aware, yet that seemed highly unlikely being Cordelia rarely left her sights. So then what?

After settling herself down, the basilisk had been happily watching the polite exchange between guardian and Sigel until attention was turned back to her. "I don't know." A faint splotch of pink dusted her cheeks at the embarrassed admittance. It was true though, Cordelia had no idea where all that had come from, just that she had the overwhelming need to play that instrument and that song right at that precise moment.

"I'm sorry." That black mess of a ponytail fell forward once again in shame at her apparent ignorance. Peeking out from behind her side swept bangs sheepishly, the youth looked to the older Raevan for some sort of guidance or explanation. Maybe she knew what had happened? "Pasha?"

Melisande blushed, a little embarrassed at being corrected. She brought both hands up to her chest as soon as the handshake ended, clasping them together demurely. "The piano! How lovely! It is a difficult one to learn, I've heard." In truth, Pasha had heard no such thing. Part of her just wanted to cover for the young Raevan, faced with her guardian's polite critique. A little thrill shot through her, and Meli smiled brilliantly. She'd never really lied before, even a little white lie! For some reason, she was proud of herself.

Cordelia's question, however, caught her by surprise and her smile faltered. "Ah~" She made a little noise, stalling. Why was Delia asking her? Melisande certainly didn't know how to play the violin, nor anything about the Frei's musical aptitude! "A moment of...inspiration, perhaps?" That's what Aki usually said, but her guardian usually said it a bit more cryptically. Pasha shrugged, and drifted a bit closer to Delia, taking the Frei's arm in her own if allowed. She turned her attention back to Ebony and found her smile again, one of the little blossoms at her temple unfurling. "Maybe the violin is a perfect fit!"
PostPosted: Mon Apr 12, 2010 8:48 pm

When Pasha drifted closer and locked arms with her, Delia's face broke into the biggest grin anyone had ever seen. The female Sigel was so nice and totally understanding! Nodding profusely, "It really is! I feel like my fingers are always tripping over themselves." The snake pouted a little, but then giggled and tilted her head in confusion. "Inspiration? What's that?"

"Hmm...maybe." Ebony said thoughtfully as she looked the instrument in her hands over once more. What the woman knew about the violin was limited and general at best, but if Cordelia had a natural talent for it then perhaps it was best to get her started on it right away. "Cordelia, would you like to learn this instrument instead?" She wouldn't be forceful and insistent on this like her father had been. Ebony hadn't exactly favored the piano in the beginning, yet felt obligated to learn it nonetheless. If the Frei wanted a change then she would gladly make it so long as the dark girl was happy with her learning.

Silver eyes sparkling with great excitement, "Really Ebby?! Yes yes please!"

Ebony nodded and chuckled, "Yes of course. Go pick one out from the others while I take this one to the clerk so he can fix it."

Smile beaming brightly, Delia tugged on her new friend's arm and pulled her closer to the wall of strings. "Come on Pasha! You can help me pick one!" The smokey Frei was practically bouncing as she floated she was so excited.

Melisande's smile grew brighter as Delia lit up, but faded a bit at her question. "Inspiration? Well, I..." She floundered a bit, and was instantly glad when Ebony took the conversation over. It was just a figure of speech, wasn't it?

She gave Cordelia's arm a squeeze as her guardian consented to the new instrument, once again smiling. How exciting! She let herself be tugged along willingly. It was so sweet of Delia to include her, that Pasha could feel the happiness as though it were a tangible thing. She folded her free hand over her slender stomach and smiled. This...Delia...was exactly what she'd needed!

"Help you pick one? Hmm!" The muse tilted her head, pondering the choices. She didn't know much about violins, but she did know a bit about music. "I think...you should do what you did before! Make a sound, and see which one you like best!" Pasha knew that Delia would find just the right one, and she couldn't wait to see which it was. She gave the Frei's arm a squeeze, caught up in the excitement.
