Suri had never been the type of person to bring her work home, or bring her personal life to the office, so she couldn't help but wonder how she'd let it slip that her parents were to be hosting an upper-crust type of soiree in two weeks time, or furthermore that she had planned to wear a suit to the aforementioned cocktail party. To Suri, suits were servicable, professional, and they worked for just about every occasion, which meant that she could spend more time helping her parents plan the actual event and less time fretting over how she looked. However, as she was later informed, pencil skirts were in no way acceptable to wear to a dinner party, even when dressed up with a nice conservative blouse and pearls.
The woman sighed, thumbing through racks of shimmery cloth that seemed more like they should be in the intimates section than in formalwear. Normally, Suri was stubborn enough to resist going out on a shopping spree with friends, but to her right was Ursula Killingworth, vessel of her ******** queen, as the General-King had put it. To be honest, Suri appreciated the company of a member of the Negaverse who was actually close to her age, but nevertheless wished that the bonding time was done on different terms. Suri was not the type of person who particularly enjoyed buying clothes or keeping up with all the new crazes.
She looked up to Ursula, her gaze unsure. "I...don't really know what the trends are, so you'll have to help me out." Holding out a golden sequin dress, Suri couldn't help but wince. She could only hope that sequins weren't currently 'in'.

Thankfully for Suri, sequins were definitely out for this season. And last season. And the season before that. And the next three seasons to come. Ursula was not a fan of anything sequined. In her opinion, it looked cheap, gaudy, and irritated the skin worse than fake sterling silver.
"It's not the trends that are important - well, not as important - the first thing we need to do is find the right colors for you," She quickly snatched away the sequined gown and placed it back on the rack from where it had obviously spawned (no respectable dress designer would lay claim to having created something as horrid as that!). "Gold would look gorgeous, so would cream. And we mustn't forget black, that's perfect for the occasion... which was what, again?"
It hadn't mattered to Ursula why she was shopping - the moment the Negaverse lieutenant had inquired about her fashion skills, the woman had practically snatched the other girl up and hauled her over to the mall. It was rare for the Hillworth secretary to enjoy a day in company other than teenagers, and Ursula was not going to waste this opportunity.
"We need to find you something just absolutely stunning, something to keep all eyes on you, no matter what you're doing throughout the party." Suri stared at her blankly and Ursula's beaming smile slightly fell, "Or... we can just find something... more ordinary, I suppose?"

Something in Suri relaxed once the sequined monster was placed out of sight and out of mind. However, her hand was still hesitant to reach into the rack of clothing again and find something even worse, so she simply listened to Ursula's musings with quiet reserve, looking up curiously when asked a question.
"My parents are hosting a summer social, which basically means a glorified Texas-style barbeque with a cocktail bar," she said blankly, looking up at one of the mannequins sporting a flower-print dress. It was an event the Ellis family did every year, for as long as Suri could remember, with food and drink and old business partners. In the years past, Suri had been the apple of Ted Ellis's eye, and she remembered being flounced to all of his friends, bragging her achievements to anyone with the patience. In the years past, she had been stunning, something to keep everyone's attention, but this year there were no achievements to brag about, no reason to shine. She was a science teacher, not a debutante.
"Something conservative would be nice," said the woman with a resigned nod, who began to slowly hover towards the shawls. "I'm really going more for the business opportunities than the entertainment, so I want to look professional." Never mind that her mother had told her to pick something flashy: Suri never listened to her mother much anyways.
It occurred to her that she still had an envelope of printed invitations in her bag to pass out to friends (so far she'd distributed one to her cat for his chewing pleasure), and with a moments shuffling in her handbag, she produced a tropical-looking glossed card, holding it out to Ursula with a professional nod. "You're welcome to come, if you like that sort of thing." The card was nicely made, if not a little tacky in color choice, and it promised food, live entertainment, and the need for a bathing suit for the pool. Suri had not mentioned needing a suit, but with her lack of a tan, it was possible that she didn't even own one.

Eyes fell onto the card immediately - when had been the last time she'd been invited to a party?
Hell, when was the last time she'd been invited to anything that wasn't a school function?
Her nose wrinkled in disgust at her own lack of a social life. With the Negaverse, her job and now her new husband... she really hadn't attended much of anything. Which was a shame. A tragedy, really.
She glanced up from the card in time to see Suri's reaction to her expression and Ursula quickly moved to cover up her mistake. "No - no, I would love to attend. I'm sorry, I was just trying to imagine...well, trying to imagine how my husband would respond to attending such an event."
Neither woman gave much thought to General-King Charonite in a bathing suit. Suri, out of probable horror while Ursula was more caught up trying to remember if she had a decent bikini available from last year. Wait, why would she have had one from last year? She hadn't gone swimming last year. She'd worked. All summer. Collecting star seeds.
Sigh.
Tucking the card into her purse, she eyed the other girl with one brow raised, reaching out to take her arm and steer her away from the shawls. "Summer event - are you comfortable with a strapless dress? You have enough on top to hold you up but if you're going to be one of those girls who keeps holding their hands up to cover their shoulders, we may as well start looking for a dress with straps. Do you have a bathing suit, perchance?"

In inviting Ursula, Suri hadn't considered the fact that her husband (Gunn Killingworth, General-King Charonite, of all people) would be in tow. Not that she wasn't willing to invite the General-King to her little family soiree, but her imagination provided her with a picture of the imposing man in some of her father's tropical hibiscus swim trunks, and that on its own was enough to cause Suri to mirror Ursula's expression. "...He's welcome to come too, if he'd like," Suri added softly, deciding that she wouldn't think about the issue further, "But there's no pressure, if that's...not his sort of thing."
She blinked in confusion as she was pulled away from the shawls, and almost moved in protest back to her comfort zone, but before she opened her mouth to complain, she remembered that she had invited the other woman for her advice and intuition, and that was something she had to trust. Suri wasn't so good at the whole 'trust' thing. She'd been groomed to be polite and cordial her whole life to her superiors, but that didn't mean she had to have any faith in them.
But this was the Negaverse, something entirely different, and trust was key. So, with a forlorn look, she bit her lip as she bid farewell to the safety zone that was a plainly knitted shawl and meekly looked up at the other displays, dresses that looked more fun than professional. All in all, Suri wasn't sure she could do 'fun'. It was one of those things like trust that simply didn't come naturally to her.
"Strapless dresses are fine, as long as it's tasteful." She cautiously reached her hand out, thumbing through the displays slowly and cautiously, as if they were covered in thorns. "And...I think I still have my uniform piece from prep school, but that's about it." Suri had never used the pool much at Sovereign Heights, but her parents had been the type to order at least one of every type of uniform, which meant that she had all sorts of outfits in that signature khaki and blue that never seemed to match much of anything. The fact that it was in no way flattering to the figure was another reason for it's disuse.
"--I don't plan to be in the pool, though," Suri added quickly, glancing back to Ursula just in case the redhead got any ideas.
