They had asked her if she wanted any help, but Francine Campinski had refused. That was how she had ended up with a face full of the most uncomplimentary makeup colors on the entirety of the planet. Thankfully, she was refraining from applying any of the perfumes laid out on the wall in front of her, but that was only because Madi was allergic. Franny held a bottle of something called Lilac Shower out in front of her, eyes squinted as she attempted to read it. Sadly, it wasn't the small font that was preventing her from understanding what the label said, it was simply the fact that she wasn't particularly literate. Oh well. She smiled as she placed the perfume back on its shelf, then turned and started to skip off toward a rack of curling irons.

Umbra herself wasn't a makeup person.
But Francine's face full of colors just about made her want to puke.
And as the gray-skinned girl walked the mall, accompanied by Mira and Serafina, the face full of colors caught her attention. Of course, not all her 'family' detested painting your face completely uncomplimentary colors, and Mira was the exception.
As the black-haired 11-year-old noticed the colorful face, she was intrigued. "How'd you get your face that many colors? Didn't know the mall offered that much free makeup," came Mira's inquiry as she walked over to Francine. There was something not quite right about the woman, but she didn't know...
(Did I mention that Neon Rave was perching on Umbra's shoulder? The girl had learned not to push her draconian pet off of her perch, but it was still annoying to have an animal sitting on you...)

"You like it? They've got all these tester thingies at Sephora! The colors are so beautiful!" They might have been, but not on Franny's face with Franny's coloring. She turned to Umbra. "You'd look cute with blue eyeshadow," she informed her fellow criminal. Franny seemed to take a short while to notice the Ato perched on the girl. "Hey, where'd you get that?" she asked, curious fingers reaching out toward the animal. She had seen others like it before...

"Ooh, I'm going down there," Mira replied in an amazingly calm tone of voice. She then managed to run faster than a tiny 11-year-old should be able to run towards the section of the mall holding Sephora.
In response to Franny's statement, Umbra twitched a bit. She disliked makeup. Facepaint too, sometimes, if it didn't go well with her gray skin. "Oh, Neon? I got her from some plant kid named Sid at a party a couple weeks ago." And Neon Rave trilled an affirmative, licking Franny's finger rather like a cat; except less sand-papery and stuff.
<Oh, sure, now you decide to stay on my shoulder, Glowstick,> the catgirl whispered to her pet in that chirp/trill/clicking language belonging to the Ato. The Ato in question shot her owner a look and attempted to look as sweet as she could.

"Hmm," Franny thought aloud. "Must not be what I thought then." The Atos she had known would have been given out by Archie, and he wasn't a plant as far as she knew, nor was he going by 'Sid' the last time she saw him. "Was there a guy there with blue fuzz on him and a tail?" Maybe he had been around to drop the pets off so this plant kid could give them out? Even though her sister seemed to think the world was better off without Archie in it, Franny missed her... brother-uncle-father-person.

"No, there wasn't," Umbra replied confusedly. "But I heard about the party from something called The Unit."
At that point, Mira skidded back to the group, her face colored amazingly well in a mix of fairy-like designs in shades of purple and blue. "Umbraaaa," the teasing call came, "I bought the blue eyeshadow." And the girl brandished two cases of blue eyeshadow-one a bit of a neon blue, one a night blue.
Umbra twitched. "Yeah, did I tell you I'm a space criminal?"
Silly Mira did have that habit of forcing confessions out of her 'sister.' It just worked that way.

"Cool!" Franny had never hung out at The Unit (that place was full of real criminals) but she knew all about how it had been created. "I'm sorry I missed all the fun!"
Franny brightened at Umbra's next revelation. "Hey, me too!" she said. "Well, I'm not a criminal really, but my bond was and I got sent here with him. I like it on Gaia a bunch!" she added exuberantly. "My legs actually work now!"
She turned her attention to Mira briefly, admiring her painted face. "You look very nice!"

"Your...legs?" Umbra pondered, placing a slender finger to her lips. (As it wasn't noticed, before, Umbra's hair was short today-only to her cat-ankles when let down, and when pulled up in a ponytail as it currently was, it only reached to about halfway below her knees.)
"Thanks," Mira grinned, "I learned how to apply makeup when I took the fieldtrip to the Gallagher Academy. I'll have to thank Jen sometime; there's no way I could have gotten into that high school without her tech." (It was best not to ask about this. It was also best to say that Mira's school considered dimension-hopping a field trip.)

"Mmm. I was a puppet. My legs just sort of hung there." She shrugged. It was all in the past anyway. "What did you used to look like?" she asked.
Franny only nodded in reply to Mira, having no idea what the girl was talking about.

Umbra shuddered. "I...try not to think about that time. But I honestly don't know-I went through that and got reborn again, so it's understandable?"
Mira began typing furiously onto a phone-like device, while Serafina leaned over her shoulder and hissed directions.
