|| Cuauhcoatl, Ikinya, Adom, Minuet, and Cabriole! ||

User Image

You would think, being so young, like would be awesome and fun! But, being little Minuet Amachi was not easy. Her mother had left before she could memorize her face, and after a long journey her sister disappeared, and after another long journey her father dumped her hear with her brother, and left in order to find their missing sister. So now her brother and she were left in the care of Cuauhcoatle and Ikinya, who were a very odd couple to say the least. You could see hat they cared for each other deeply, but the side always made her want to giggle. They made her wonder what had ever happened to her parents that they couldn't work thing out? This couple must face so many more challenges compared to her parents. But, she couldn't ponder why much longer, it was time for some lessons!

And, despite the fact she was sad about being under Cuauhcoatle's care, he was a pretty fun guy! And he didn't mind that her brother and she made a ton of noise dancing around. He really was happy, and she was determined to be as happy as possible too!

It's time to take a gloomy situation and make it shine!

Early morning had meant early chores for the Usdia, happily getting up and the break of dawn to head out and begin her plethora of daily taskings. It wasn't until recently that she'd had her own little shadow follow her in her morning routine, one which warmed her heart that her son Adom would want to spend time with her. Thus, now with the sun nearing the noon mark she had her wicker basket set on the grass while she picked the first crop of spring strawberries; Adom watching intently and learning how to pick the berries without mashing them or leaving teethmarks on the bright red fruit.

"I understand how you do it....its about pressure and twisting the stem instead of pulling......but how do you resist eating them?" The rather intelligent little colt grinned, tilting his head as he tried out the method for himself but in the end once he broke the skin with his teeth he ate it happily.

Ikinya could only beam, seeing so much of Cuauh's influence on the little guy....if it hadn't been for the fact that she knew he was adopted; she could have sworn he could have very well been their child...not that he wasn't loved like one. "It takes discipline, Adom. You'll learn it in time...you don't need to write off your childhood just yet. Have you seen Minuet or Cabriole this morning....perhaps they'd like to play?"

Shuffling his hooves, the colt looked away as he licked the berry from his lips, turning his head to the ground. "What if they want to play games I can't do, Momma?"

Cuauhcoatl, meanwhile, was inside, gathering up some supplies for the days main lesson. Mecho hadn't quite 'dumped' the kids off on him so much as anything else. The journey had been rough on almost pubescent foals -- after he had almost lost another from wandering as he looked for a runaway, he realized he needed to bring them to him before searching for the missing daughter. A choice that had nearly broken his dear friend's heart.

It had been a long journey from that point, and it would be a long way to get back to hunt for the girl She had been taught the general direction of Cuauhcoatl's cabin, and the angeni had been instructed to stay so he could hunt for Mecho if she arrived without her father on wing. Cuauh worried that the children would be nearing the semi-adulthood of 'middle-teenager' by the time their father returned.

Meanwhile, he needed to stay with Ikinya and educate the children. It wasn't as if this was the first time he spent time caring for children without parents around, having raised a few orphans in his time.

And he was their godfather, so it was his place to do so.

Walking out from the Longhouse, he tugged on a tarnished copper European style school Bell's -- one of his many collections -- rope hanging by the door with his teeth, before picking up the woven basket by its handle and settling down on his favorite spot for lessons, the carefully tended mound covered in soft clover , "Time for our Daily required lesson."

Cabriole followed closely behind his sister, deep in thought; although he was young, he had already experienced several rather painful events. First, his mother ran off, leaving his siblings and himself with his probably heart-broken and confused father. Then, one of his sister ran off after their runaway mother while they were moving. Now, his father had left his other sister and himself with Cuauhcoatl to run after his runaway sister, who had set off after their- Ugh, it was so confusing! If not for the herd, he would surely be upset! He sighed, and then proceeded to trip over a stone. Before he could comprehend what was happening, he tumbled forward and landed at his sister's hoofs.

"Oh, um..." He blushed, scrambling back up on all fours, only to fall down again in his haste to stand up. When he did get up to stand beside Minuet, his blush had deepened. When he opened his mouth to try to "explain" himself, he heard the sound of a bell being sounded - Cuauhcoatl's lesson time! He heaved a sigh of relief before trotting towards it as quickly as possibly, avoiding his sister's gaze; literally saved by the bell!

"We're here!" He announced with a grin as he slowed down, "What are we doing today?"

Minuet had been too far gone in her thought to even notice Cabriole was trotting along behind her. Her brother was by far her best friend, even if he was a bit clumsy and could occasionally get on her nerves, but that's what sibling were for right? She was sure that even with her whole family together, he'd still get on her nerves at time, but...would they be as close? Then, she was stumbling forward, forget everything she ever said about being close to her brother!

She bounced back up quicker them him, mostly because he fell again, but before she could say anything she heard the bell, signaling another lesson! Cabriole dashed off and she was quickly at his side, she forgot all about their little accident and was just excited to see what they were doing today.

"Yup! Here!" She said, with a grin to match her brother's. "Yes, what exactly are we going today?"

Frowning gently as she dropped the berry she held in her teeth into the basket, the mare leaned down and nuzzled a few unruly locks back into place on Adom's mane. "Adom, what makes you think that? Have you given them a chance yet? Things must be tough for them without their mother and father here, and a missing sibling....they'll warm up to you im sure. They've seemed to take to Cuauh wonderfully....just like you."

"Well of course Mom, he's daddy! How could I not - " Adom blinked and listened as the bell chimed out into the morning air, looking back up to Ikinya and nuzzling against her chest. "I better get going mom, see you soon?"

"Of course. I'll bring a snack once I'm done here. Learn lots!" Ikinya beamed and nudged him on with her nose till the little colt went trotting off to Cuauh's class. Approaching quickly he noticed already Minuet and Cabriole were present, and slipping to the side he stood, waiting for the lesson plan of the day

Cuauhcoatl chuckled softly as the group gathered around, and settled himself down on his knees before lounging comfortably as he poked a nose through his basket, "Today we're continuing our lessons on human culture where we left off."

He paused as he looked through the basket, smiling slyly before he started taking out a few musical instruments, "These, like the bells you wear or the singing tone of ones voice, create 'music'. Now, most instruments require 'fingers' to play properly, but I brought out some that could be played by soquili without being transformed into a human like I can.. Perhaps later I can show you how an Ocarina is played, however for now.." He smiled slightly as he set out some of the native rattles, a couple small drums.

However, he then took out a small box, "This.. Is a "Music Box". I collected it from Europe on my last visit. Brand newly forming technology using clockwork. When you turn this knob here..." he delicately turned a key with his teeth, ever so tenderly, "And open the lid, it plays a small tune."

He then tipped open the lid, a small, chimey version of 'greensleeves' playing from the wooden box, "There is also a 'mirror' inside. You can see yourselves in it.."

Cabriole grinned happily, hardly able to contain his excitement when the lesson plan was revealed to them - humans are such interesting creatures and their culture is all the more so. Of course, there are still many things that he do not comprehend about the mysterious two-legged creatures, but he was pretty sure that there will be plenty of chances for him to learn more as an adult.

For now, he's more than content with learning from the angeni.

His eyes seemed to widen more and more as each musical instrument was pulled out from the basket. As music was something that he was able to relate to on a very personal level, staring at the many different tools humans had created to make music with both fascinated and awed him... After all, the only musical tools he used were the bells he owned and his own voice. The colt smiled, recognizing some of the instruments that had been laid out in front of him, such as the drums. He was aware that humans hit them to create a rather hollow sound, and that sometimes, they dance to it.

"A... Music box?" Cabriole echoed, staring at the seemingly plain box. He tried to absorb what his teacher was saying, but he was unable to comprehend how such an ordinary looking box would have such an honor of being called a 'music box'. However, as Cuauhcoatl demonstrated how the box was operated and opened the lid, the colt's mouth dropped open in pure surprise. Ignoring the thing called a 'mirror', he leaned in to be nearer to the box, "How... How does it do that?"

Minuet had to admit that it was interesting to learn about humans, seeing as they could do many unique things that they couldn't do. It help to have five digits at the end of your legs. Today though, proved to be one of the best lessons yet! There was nothing more interesting then music, and it was something she held close to her heart for obvious reasons. She had known humans had their own types of music, but they had never gotten to far into the subject before.

She stared at all of the instruments Cuauhcoatl pulled from the baskets, she made the appropriate 'ooooohs' and 'aaaahs' and especially when her pulled out he lovely music box. She watched as he carefully turned the key with his teeth and then gasped when music came from the box. Wow! She had never heard anything quite like that before!

Minuet leaned in with her brother to get a better look, she stared at herself in the 'mirror' for a second. It was less blurry then when she stared into the lake, and she was surprised by how smooth the surface was, but she was over that in a heartbeat compared to how long she could close her eyes and listen to the music. "That's got to be the coolest thing I've ever seen!" She didn't really care how it worked, she just knew it was awesome!

Unable to see past the larger colts, Adom remained off to the side as he folded his legs down till he was laying in the grass. From here he could still hear the beautiful little melody the music box played on cue when he assumed was the point it was opened. Adom could only imagine what kind of mechanical artistry was used to create each stroke that chimed the tune; finding his eyes lingering up to the bell.

It reminded him of the few times he'd been up in Cuauh's travel basket, the song striking the same notions he'd felt looking out into the vast world which didn't seem as big as to when his tiny hooved were planted on the ground.

Sighing rather peacefully with a smile on his lips, he leaned his head on grass and could see bits and peices from the musical box. Content to listen for the time being.

Cuauh rose an eyebrow over at Adom, snuffing slightly and streatching a wing out, trying to invite his Adoptive son closer to take a look, "Adom. Why are you hiding?"

Adjusting his wing he lightly touched the boy on the top of the head, trying to draw him closer, "Minuet, Cabriole -- could you shift a little so Adom can get a better look?"

He waited a few beats for everything to get started into settled in before continuing his lesson, keeping an eye on the group so they could all get a good view, "It works with some clockwork -- I showed you some in the last lession. However, turns a scroll, with little spikes brushing against a metal comb.. I got one that can be interchanged with different scrolls, allowing for a wider variety of music. This song is "Greensleeves"..."

"O-oh! Of course!" Cabriole snapped out of his thoughts as he looked up at the stallion; he had been so fascinated with the music box that he had almost forgotten that there were other foals beside him! Blushing slightly, he trotted backwards slowly, smiling at the usdia colt as he did to encourage him to move forward - he was taller than Adom, after all, and will be able to see past him to look at whatever Cuauhcoatl had to show them.

Now that his attention was divided, he realized that the shiny thing called a 'mirror' was rather interesting - it reflected the light of the sun and he could see himself in it... It was like the surface of a still, calm lake captured in a small, compact space! His smile widened when the name of the song was introduced; 'Greensleeves'...

"Do you know how it got its name?" He asked out of curiosity. However, his eyes widened a moment later, "The song can be changed in some?" He blinked, looking in awe at the small box in front of him in wonder.

"Oh~ Sorry!" Minuet said, scooting over to make room for Adom. She was still getting used to there being Usdia around. Sometimes she forgot that Adom was so much smaller then her, and Ikinya was pretty much the same size as her. So, she sat back behind Adom, since she could easily see over him.

Minute thought about their last lesson, and how everything works with basically turning 'gears' if she was remembering correctly anyway. She had found if fascinating, and not that she could associate it with a 'musicbox' everything about it became ten times more interesting. She really liked the title of the song, and decided that it suited the style of music playing well.

"It's just so pretty~" Minuet said, totally enjoying today's lesson.
