Character History

Born in Marsitas Hold, Breayn grew up among the many children of the hold - mostly boys - and was very close with her parents. They were both without craft, and worked as drudges to the hold - cooking, cleaning, and doing the grunt work. Breayn grew up doing the same type of work, and hated every moment of it. She didn't have a problem with the hard work - she enjoyed it, really, and discovered as she grew up working among the boys that she enjoyed the state of her body as a result of the work. What she hated was that it would result in nothing - she would be stuck doing the same type of work up until she died. Unaccepting of this fate, Breayn insisted that she be sent to the Smithcrafter Hall, wanting to retain the aspect of hard work, but have something to show for it. With good recommendations from many people in the hold, all of various ranks, she was accepted at the age of 13 turns, on their good word.

When Breayn walked the tables three turns later, she became one of the minority of Journeywomen of the craft (compared to the male population wearing the knot). She requested to be sent back to her home hold and take up work there. She focused on metal smithing, but since she worked in the hold, she was well-versed in the many requests asked of all branches of smithing.

At 17 turns, after spending over a full turn back at Marsitas Hold, a Search dragon came when there was a new clutch hardening on the sands. Breayn was outside the shop area, getting out of the heavy air and on her way to grab a bite to eat, as the Search dragons circled lazily above, preparing to land. Breayn had never seen a dragon up close before, and felt all her muscles tighten as they neared. She made a dash across the open ground to the main hall, though she felt her hunger instantly disappear. Before she could make it, a black dragon blocked her path, eyes whirling blue-green, his figure towering above her. Struck with fear at the beast before her, she hardly noticed as the rider unmounted easily and looked her over. After he calmed her down and explained to her exactly what a Search was - her parents had always kept her away in the Hold, or sent her outside of it when Search dragons were expected - he explained what exactly it would mean for her. With a haughty laugh, she accepted, though could feel her stomach turn over as he helped her up to his dragon's back and all the way through between and back to Malvren Weyr.

Her Candidacy didn't last long as she Impressed at her first Hatching. A blue hatchling - large for his size - declared himself as Draith to her almost immediately after emerging from his shell, and in a voice more eloquent than she could have ever expected, asked that he feed her, and allow him to protect her.

Breayn became B'ryn - not denying herself the honorific that the male riders took on - and found herself in a partnership with a dragon who happened to be more than she ever expected from any other living thing.

Character Description

Birth Name: Breayn
Rider Honorific: B'ryn
Gender: Female
Age: 20 Turns
Sexual Orientation: Very, very straight

Occupation: Blue Rider (Draith)
Previous Occupation: Journeywoman Smithcrafter, specialized on metal smithing but with the varied skills a Hold requires

Height: 6'1"
Weight: 193 lbs.
Build: Extremely muscular, well-toned, appears slim
Hair: Short cropped, straight, very dark brown - very boyish
Eye color: Steel-blue
Skin: Medium-tanned, red-tinted in the face and neck from her craft

General Notes: Easily mistaken as a male, especially with her under-developed chest.

Long Description: B'ryn is often mistaken as a guy when she bears her riding gear. Her well-muscled figure creates a gentle curve to her hips, but it just makes her look like a well-toned, slim guy since her chest is hardly developed an does nothing to broaden her chest. Her shoulders are broad and the muscles beneath etched and hard, matching her well-muscled arms - they are extremely well-toned, though she doesn't look ripped, just very well-constructed as is the mark of her trade. Standing at 6'1" doesn't help to break the male illusion either, since she towers over the average female and many of her male counterparts as well. Her skin is of a medium tone, though her face seems permanently burned slightly red from spending so much time in the heat, and it's unclear if that will ever wear away. Her face is the most feminine feature of her, with a slim face and very slight jawline and somewhat hidden cheekbones. Her steel-blue eyes are slightly wider than the norm, and set just slightly too far apart from a narrow, very slight nose that holds little prominence over her face. She keeps her straight, dark-brown hair cropped short, long hair getting in the way of the hammer or furnace, which emasculates her feminine face just enough that depending how she dresses, it's easy to understand the common gender mistake. However, as soon as she speaks, her gentle alto tone gives her gender away - it is clearly the voice of a girl, even if slightly distorted and sounding off-tone as a result of spending so much time in a metal shop.

Character Personality

Having grown up working with boys, and being part of a craft that is predominantly male-inhabited, B'ryn had to develop a strong exterior. She doesn't let others insult her - in fact, she'll fight back as long as they keep pushing... verbally. Even though she's built for physical labor, B'ryn is terrified of fighting, and even though she'll threaten in an attempt to get someone to back down, she could never actually act on that confrontation - something she's ashamed of. She considers herself a coward as a result, and though she puts on an air of superiority and confidence, actually seeks reassurance from those she's closest with, always questioning her choices and looking to others for advice while trying to keep them none the wiser to her weakness. Incidentally, she finds herself getting into a lot of situations she'd rather not be in, not wanting to show any weakness, and often agreeing to things without realizing what she might be getting herself in to. A prime example: Accepting being Searched and coming to Malvren in the first place.

If she finds someone that she can depend upon and who she trusts and looks to for guidance - whether they're aware of it or not - she will be unfalteringly loyal to them, as long as they ask nothing of her that she wouldn't ask of herself. She won't follow them blindly, but she will be the first to help them should they need it.

Nothing about the way she acts says that she's a girl. She can easily be perceived as brash, and she wants everyone to know that she's independent. She knows how to use her looks to get what she needs - which usually involves a stare down with someone else. However, her inner weakness and relatively happy family situation have left her longing for something more. She doesn't want to be recognized by anyone as being a desperate girl, but secretly she longs for someone to hold her and be the man of the relationship - something that is rarely achieved among her and her friends. However, she's very protective of her sexuality. She wants a man. She can easily be perceived as being attracted to other girls - especially since she's often mistaken as a man - but she's not interested, and gets insulted and angry when anyone insinuates that she may be interested in women. She understands how Weyrs work, and has accepted their view of sex and sexuality - especially since becoming a blue rider. However, what she seeks in a partner, should she find one, is of the opposite gender.

Dragon Personality

User Image
Cert

Draith is a very relaxed dragon, though he is not without work ethic or personality. In fact, he prefers to be kept busy than to be left to laze about. He likes balance in his life, and enjoys pleasant conversation and playfullness while he works, and relaxing once they are finished.

He is definitely a male dragon, and most gentlemanly. His first words to Breayn upon hatching were "Breaynmine, I am here for you. Feed me, please. Let me protect you from them. I will be yours." He sensed her inner longing and weakness, and wants to fill that void. His masculinity as a dragon is the compliment to her hidden femininity - essentially, he wants to be her knight in shining armor (in common terms).

As far as he is concerned, she doesn't need anyone else. He is there to be the powerful man she secretly wants, and he understands that she has no interest in females. His interests in dragons are female, of course, but if she wished it, he would only fly female dragons with male riders. Nothing should make her feel uncomfortable - especially nothing that he does.

In action, Draith is level-headed, but expects control if there is a crisis. He and B'ryn's relationship is like that of a happily married couple. They both work with each other and for each other, and back off when the other is the better person for the task. Draith wants to be the man, and works to relieve that life-established task from His.
