It was finally spring. The breeze blew softly through the trees, flowers were slowly starting to stick their buds up through tender, damp soil and the smell of earth was almost permanently in the air. To almost everyone else, it was a time of happiness and rebirth, the long winter finally over. Black Lady, however, was not so joyous. It was fine to bury her feelings under cold winter frost, to not think at all of what she had lost and left behind. But with the thaw of the ground came the thawing of her memories and her heart.

It was absolutely intolerable. So instead of floating around the town, idly looking for something interesting to observe, she was on a mission. Sitting outside the Crystal dormitories, searching for the first senshi that hopped over its walls. They were going to get a nasty little surprise, courtesy of the late Princess of Crystal Tokyo. Anger could be internalized easily, bottled and capped until it spilled over into something regrettable, or it could be quietly beaten out. Twirling a pink strand of hair idly, it was obvious which route she was choosing. "Come out, come out, whoever you are." Patience was never her strong suit, after all.

So she was supposed to meet up with one of the other Zodiacs at Shufflepuck to patrol. Now, Sailor Virgo could take the slow way out and walk to the subway station as Elke Arma. Or she could take the fast way, henshin up in her room and just bolt.

Sailor Virgo decided to bolt.

It wasn't like she couldn't use the time to think. Virgo's princess was hurting, she'd seen a little four-year-old turn into a teenager like her, there were new senshi and enemies everywhere and she didn't know what to do. Other than, you know, go out and patrol, kicking the butts of every single youma she saw.

She vaulted the fence outside Crystal, landing gracefully on the sidewalk just in time to hear someone's voice. "Hello," she called, looking around--she didn't see anyone, that didn't mean someone wasn't there. "Hello?"

Goodie goodie gumdrops, this one looked like she knew what she was doing. That meant there would be a little more fun than simply wailing on a poor child that had just been shoved a henshin pen and given a vague idea on How To Be A Senshi. Hearing her calling out to shadows, however, slid this girl a few notches down on the estimation of exactly how smart she was. This was no Captain Aries, apparently. But that was just fine, the Lady didn't want a fight. In fact, she was going to be particularly unladylike tonight, and behave a bit like a schoolyard bully. There was a first time for everything, after all.

It didn't take more than a quick thought to teleport herself off the wall, skirt billowing out and revealing a stockinged leg as Black Lady appeared in front of the senshi. Hands were tangled lightly to keep her silky wrap from blowing away entirely, and Serenity was smiling darkly. "Nice how that works. You ask, you get." Again that small curtsy and hard ruby eyes. "Black Lady Serenity, at your service Sailor....?" The voice trailed off and left no room for argument. She at least wanted to know who she was pounding into the dirt, after all!

Virgo, at first, was thrilled to see another person, and one that felt more like a senshi. It meant she could give her 'Zodiacs want to patrol with you!' speech, and that meant the Captain would be pleased with her. But there was something so weird about her, and it set her teeth on edge. It felt wrong, very very very wrong. She had ignored worse to talk to Negaverse agents, but it was weird. She didn't like it, at all, she didn't want to talk to this person at all.

Still, that was no reason to be rude, and she returned the curtsey. When the woman introduced herself, she regretted it, though. The Black Lady--the one who took the Crystal, her Princess's Crystal. Did she still have it?... No. Probably not. But still-- "You're the one who attacked the Princess!"

The senshi of Innocence slid into a ready stance. She even growled, putting on her game face. "Won't you please give up? I'm Sailor Virgo, and in the name of the Princess, I'll destroy you!"

Princess? Oh ho ho, so this was one of Chronos' guardians? Better and better every time! Oh how she so desperately wished that there were no strictures, no rules, and for the first time since coming to Destiny City, the darkness inside of the Lady wished that there was no Wiseman. No one to hinder her delicious descent into madness through blood and slaughter. Instead, she was forced pull it back and control herself with the strictest of reminders and promises that soon, someone would die. But not this senshi, and she should be blessedly thankful that there was one such as Wiseman inhabiting her city.

"That is not fair, I did not touch her!" As if it mattered, she certainly didn't stop her partner from doing as much harm as possible, and she had attacked Captain Aries. But that was absolutely trivial, wasn't it? Pigtails flowed to one side as Black Lady tilted her head and gave a cruel little smirk. "So quick to fight. Good girl." Knotting the sash around her waist idly, she took her own stance, and then pulled perhaps the cheapest move in the book - teleportation. Suddenly she was behind Virgo, kicking her in the back of the knees with one heeled foot. "Sad. Not good enough!"

Virgo had never said she cared about justice; she wanted her friends and family safe, she wanted her world preserved just as it was, and that actually left a lot of moral ambiguity in the senshi of innocence's mind. So while she was scared--terrified, actually--at the thought of facing someone who had defeated not just Gemini Alpha but also Captain Aries and the Princess, she wasn't going to back down. As far as she was concerned, the Black Lady had been there and had done absolutely nothing to help the Princess. That made her not only an enemy, but also--not a Lunar. Not to Virgo.

She did wish that she had a cell phone like the Lunars; it would be much easier, perhaps, to destroy the Black Lady with the Captain, Capricorn and Libra at her back.

She didn't even have time to turn before the Black Lady had taken out her knees; Virgo almost snapped out her arms, but remembered at the last second to fall properly, take the hit on a part of her body not riddled with delicate little bones. She landed, mercifully, on the side that hadn't been injured two weeks ago, and almost immediately was kicking out in an attempt to take the pink-haired lady down. No matter if it connected or not, she was using the momentum to stand again. The Captain had always despaired over her inability to fight from any position but standing up.

"You hurt her," Virgo said, as she scrambled to her feet, "You hurt my Captain--you hurt my Princess!"

Heels connected solidly with the bone of Black Lady's ankle and she hissed in pain before circling the Senshi of Innocence with a snarl marring her features in a horrible way. The calm and serene princess had vanished behind an almost feral mask of a barbarian, intent on doing nothing more than causing as much harm as allowed. Death was her choice, and she would have gladly obliterated Virgo where she stood. Alas, it was not to be.

Feinting out with her left arm through the girl's midsection for a sweep, the Lady's right fist came up to plow straight into the confused face of Virgo. "Who cares about princesses? They're disposable, replaceable. Haven't you children learned that yet?" Anger surged as once again her family was relegated to nothingness in the face of these ridiculous wannabes. This girl could barely hold against her in a fight, and she was supposed to be a senshi?! Puny all of them!

Her head snapped back, and Virgo stumbled back a few steps. With her hand over her mouth, she took a moment to breathe. The pink-haired Lady's punch had landed squarely on her jaw as she'd moved to avoid the attack towards her torso. Virgo's complexion took on a greenish pallor at the taste of blood in her mouth; she had bitten her tongue.

Her breathing picked up--more than just from the exertion of fighting, now it was because of abject fear. Panic, too: She was bleeding, but more than that, her Princess was not replaceable. No one else could do anything to take Chronos's place, but between anger and fear she couldn't summon up the words to share this sentiment with Black Lady. The snap kick she came up with was wild--strong because she was desperate and panicking, but poorly aimed for that reason.

Strong, but not strong enough to do anything other than sting the palms of Black Lady as her hands intercepted, body arcing back like a batter flinching away from a wild pitch. It was close, she'd even felt the toes scrape along her skin. She kept the momentum, lifting the leg up higher so that Virgo was making soft pain noises. Then, when the lady was up close and personal, a black foot slid in to cut out the other one out from underneath the senshi, twisting the leg at the same time.

The blue-haired girl went crashing on her stomach to the ground, and almost as an afterthought, Black Lady released her leg and watched her laying there. It had been so easy, not a challenge at all really, and eminently disappointing. "You can give up. I will not kill you yet." Oh but how she longed to! One foot rested solidly on the sage of her fuku, the heel digging in between Virgo's shoulder blades in proof that there was no way she could win, the victor had already been decided. "I promise." Lips quirked at that, and the foot came down just a bit harder, pushing some of the remaining air from the girl's lungs.

She was flexible, but not so flexible as that; her knee was already bending to touch the ground in an attempt to lessen the strain. Then that leg was kicked out from under her, too, and Virgo landed face-down on the concrete. She stayed put. More important to stay alive for another day, more important to not die before her Princess got the Opal Crystal back, but she balled up her fists and tried not to cry. It didn't exactly work; she stayed quiet, but her shoulders were quavering. Her voice, too, shook as she said, "I--"

The bluenette choked on the words. They tasted like ashes in her mouth. Her Captain had been proud of her for nearly dying in the defense of two Lunar senshi. Would Aries be proud of her still if she gave up in the face of one of the Zodiacs' greatest enemies?

No. Nor would she be proud if she died fighting a useless battle. But she had to stay alive to earn the Captain's pride back. "I g-give up, please--please--"

Black Lady would have reassured Virgo that her captain, no matter how tough she might have seemed, might actually have been proud of the girl again this night. Angry certainly, you simply didn't fight a larger power on your own and ever hope to win, she had been beaten into the pavement for no true reason. But she'd had a choice, and she had stood to hold the line. There was admiration in the princess for that and the black heel came off of the Zodiac's back, to be replaced by firm yet oddly gentle hands.

Her voice now was entirely at odds with her previous vitriol which had been beaten out, as she'd intended. It was something that the young Chibiusa had learned from Uranus, from her own mother, that tender voice that reassured you that while you had lost, you had lost well. "Good. You did good." It was a whisper in Virgo's ear, and the smile could be almost felt on her lips with how close Black Lady was to the younger girl. "Be proud. Beware." A hand splayed against Virgo's back, where they both knew was the access point for her star seed. "Be good." A bubbly, childish giggle and the pressure was gone, along with the lady herself, vanished into the night.

It was twisted, it was confusing, it was absolutely pointless! But somewhere in Destiny City, the only remaining Japanese senshi was humming softly to herself, feeling just a bit better than before about finding herself in this strange place.

Was she going to die? Virgo was convinced she was going to die, was convinced that this was just a powerful opponent playing with one that couldn't stop her no matter what. So when the heel came off her back, Virgo braced herself, but nothing happened. No finishing blow came, and instead there were hands on her shoulders. Pink hair fell into her line of vision; she listened, a little stunned. Tensed when the long fingernails grazed her back, whimpered as she realized what Black Lady might be going for, but nothing happened.

Be good.

The assailant disappeared, and Virgo laid there on the pavement for a long moment, shaking. She was going to throw up, she could tell by the peculiar lightweight feeling in her limbs. With one hand over her mouth, she managed to scale Crystal's fence once more. Be proud. Proud for what?...

She slipped into her dorm room, into the bathroom, where she threw up. And she stayed there most of the night, still thinking: You did good.

But had she?
