SEGA Unveils Conduit 2 For Wii, First Screens
High Voltage Software gearing up for sequel.
by Jim Reilly

March 31, 2010 - First revealed in Nintendo Power, Conduit 2 will be released this Fall exclusively for the Nintendo Wii. Along with a standard single-player and multiplayer online modes, Conduit 2 will also include online and offline cooperative play.

One of these new co-op modes, titled Team Invasion Mode, allows up to four players to play online together or offline on four-way split screen. The game allows up to 12 players to battle online and includes Wii Speak compatibility.

"Conduit 2 is an enormous sequel. Not only does it greatly improve and expand on the original, the online and co-op play modes aim to raise the bar for Wii war games," said Sean Ratcliffe, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America.

"The support for the original has been amazing." said Eric Nofsinger, HVS Chief Creative Officer. "The fans have always been a major factor in our development process and their continued enthusiasm has helped make Conduit 2 even better."

-High Voltage's not-totally-successful Wii shooter The Conduit is getting sequel, as confirmed by Nintendo Power. While specific gameplay details were not shared, the magazine still managed eight pages of content on the thing, and was able to squeeze a few crucial facts.

A whole new selection of game modes, including returning modes like Bounty Hunter, are on the cards, alongside a whole new character class system. Classes will feature upgrades such as robotic legs, that allow for faster sprinting. Players will be able to customize their characters quite extensively, adding upgrades to their suits and creating a unique online warrior. Also, four-player splitscreen is confirmed.

As well as competitive multiplayer, a co-op Invasion mode for up to four players has also been announced. Specific details have not been revealed, but it sounds like it will be some kind of "Horde" game type.

You know what? That actually sounds ... exciting. Yes, The Conduit 2 actually sounds frigging exciting. With Red Steel 2 using MotionPlus to really make an FPS work on the Wii, hopefully High Voltage will be able to take some examples and make a truly console-worthy shooter on the Wii. I hope so. Having a top notch online shooter on the Wii is inconceivable, but kind of awesome.

-Though High Voltage isn't ready to spill the beans about specific[online] modes just yet, the studio promises a bevy of new gameplay types, as well as the return of the first game's innovative Bounty Hunter mode.

As you might expect, weapons like the Vortex Cannon will add a few wrinkles to online competition, as will the introduction of different character classes, each with unique attributes. You'll also be able to unlock suit upgrades that bestow your character with special skills; robotic legs, for example, will let you sprint greater distances."

"Right now, the plan is to have one primary suit slot and two secondary slots where you can equip upgrades, but that may change in the final game. From a purely cosmetic standpoint, you'll have tons of options to change your character's appearance using the same modular system the team uses to diversify enemies. For those who prefer to keep their gun fights local, Conduit 2 will feature a two-to four-player splitscreen option for all of the game's competitive modes.

And when you want to take a break from blasting your friends and loved ones, you can team up with them in the new co-op Invasion mode. Up to four players can join forces (either via splitscreen or online), and the challenges they'll face are unique to this mode. Further details remain under wraps, but we always welcome the chance to eradicate some alien scum with our fellow humans."

"Their first order of business: expanding the game's scope, "In the first Conduit, I think the core experience is very sold," says producer Josh Olson."

- ASE returns
- set in Atlantis
- SEGA publishing
- Huge boss battles
- old/new weapons

-As you Nintendo Power subscribers and purchasers will learn (if you haven't gotten the latest issue already) High Voltage will be bringing its flagship franchise back to the Wii this fall with The Conduit 2. GoNintendo has a ton of details from the magazine's upcoming feature, but we're only providing the highlights, in case you plan on reading for yourself.

In short: It's due this fall, it picks up right where the first left off and it's embracing its sci-fi vibe more than the first game did. Like we said, plenty of details are forthcoming; however, at the moment, it sounds like High Voltage is hoping to ratchet up pretty much every aspect of the first game. Here's hoping we have some official assets for you soon.

-High Voltage is hard at work on The Conduit 2 for Wii, according to the latest issue of official US magazine Nintendo Power, and SEGA will once again be publishing.

The preview, detailed on NeoGAF, reveals that the first-person shooter sequel takes place in Atlantis and promises new weapons and huge boss fights for its campaign.

Online players will also be able to upgrade their suit - the current plan is for one primary upgrade slot and two secondaries - with things like robotic legs for speedier movement. There will also be different character classes to choose from.

Speaking of online, the mag said that the original game's Bounty Hunter mode would return, alongside a new four-player co-operative outing called Invasion, which works in both split-screen and online and pitches teams against specific challenges.

The original Conduit was a technical marvel on the Wii with an impressive engine and a large number of configurable control options, which endeared it to hardcore Wii gamers often forced to make do with dodgy FPS ports and awkward control schemes.

Unfortunately the content itself was a bit mediocre, leading to the game scoring 5/10 in its Eurogamer review.

SEGA told Eurogamer it had no comment to make on the Nintendo Power piece.

I didn't write the official IGN review for The Conduit when it hit the Wii last year, but I did play it extensively. The game might not have blown gamers away with its story or character development, but it certainly offered up some fine single and multiplayer first-person shooting action on the Wii console. True, with The Conduit the team at High Voltage Software promised a lot of things that, in the end, it couldn't deliver, and while the final product was something pretty special for the Wii – at least in terms of third party designs – there was a lot of room for improvement.

And SEGA's giving High Voltage Software a second go at the FPS design on Wii with Conduit 2 – note that the company has dropped "the" from the title for the sequel. Conduit 2 is High Voltage Software putting a few tweaks here and there in a much tighter, deeper, and more impressive first-person shooter experience for Wii owners, and hopefully any qualms anyone had with the first game will find their complaints addressed in the final version of this sequel.

Expect a larger assortment of enemies in Conduit 2.

SEGA today invited me down to its office to check out a build of Conduit 2 in action. While still very early (the game's not scheduled to ship until this Fall), it's clear that a lot of effort is going into the game to spice up the narrative established in the first game, and bulk up the variety of gameplay modes, both in single and multiplayer.

Conduit 2 still involves you using a buttload of firepower, both foreign and domestic, to thwart an alien invasion on Earth. You've got realistic weapons as well as energy blasters from the alien technology, and High Voltage Software's working to get nearly two dozen different weapons into the final game. One of the coolest weapons I saw in action was something called the Vortex Blaster, an energy-based gun that has a charging ability that "collects" all the fired enemy bullets into a single cluster. When you've gathered up enough projectiles, you can throw them back in a powerful blast. There's also a mobile turret that can be picked up and moved to different parts of a level, and can be remotely fired via an iPad-like device that lets you look down the scope the gun while safely tucked away behind cover.

Catch bullets and throw them back with the Vortex Blaster.

One of the levels I got a chance to see is early in the game, where players are thrust upon an oil rig off of the southern coast of Florida. You can really see High Voltage Software's engine at work here, with weather effects (pouring rain splashing down on the deck) as well as the immense rolling waves rising and falling and cresting against the structure. In the controlled demo, firefights happened both inside and outside of the structure, and you can see that the variety of enemies are much more numerous. You'll even be able to peck off bad guys' armor and helmets, weakening them with well placed shots.

I noticed little things added to the experience, like the ability to flip over tables for cover. Added to the game is a sprint button so you can charge down enemies or run for the hills. Levels aren't corridor-based anymore, according to SEGA – while I did see a few of those same S-shaped hallways to assist in the level loading that were in the original game, levels were much more open and had multiple paths to explore in this sequel. There are even ladders, so levels can have structures and rooms stacked on top of each other. Ladders, people! We're in the big leagues now!
