Jim met Gene after Gene crashed on Sentennial as a teenager. They were both orphans so they just kind of stuck together.

Pretty sure they mentioned it in the anime. Either that or Wikipedia. Or the little booklet thingie that comes with the DVDs.

I think it was mentioned only very, very briefly in like one episode in the anime. Melfina or somebody asked Jim how he and Gene came to be together.
