Since the S.A.D organized by Jada Chamberlyn, one Meadowview girl in particular had to deal with a small problem. The kind of problem that made her feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Alessa had fallen for Damian Cole.
Sure, all he’d needed to do was pay her attention and be nice to her for an evening. Sure, she had had a boyfriend two years ago, it'd ended badly, and he wasn't very different from him. But still, she wanted to pass some quality time with him again, and when it came to relations that went beyond friendship, she was incompetent in the matter. Since she hadn’t had a chance to see him again for the past month, she however had to take the first step.
Hence she had to call the girl who was the most versed in the art of romance that she knew.
Selena Adams.
Taking a look at the right, then at the left, getting out of the classroom, she made sure he wasn’t around. Here goes nothing. “Huh, Selena?” asked the brunette, talking towards her with the faintest hint of a blush, “Are you doing something right now? Can I ask you something?”
A pause. "It might take a minute or two."
Boy, what an understatement.

Selena wasn't exactly paying attention, staring ahead in the vague direction of the teacher and the blackboard, but her mind was far from the algebra written in board marker. She was jumping between plenty of different things, lost in her thoughts. When her next ballet class was, what the name of that girl two seats to the left of her was, whether that absolutely gorgeous foreign exchange student could talk enough english to secure a date...

And suddenly everyone was getting up and Selena was sharply brought back to reality, inwardly cursing herself for not concentrating towards the end. Damn, now she didn't know what the homework was! Hurriedly scooping her books into her bag, slinging the rucksack over one shoulder, she attempted to rush out after the teacher to ask him to repeat what the homework had been...

When suddenly she was accosted by a very familiar looking girl, who's name she couldn't...quite...reach. It was there, in her head, but she couldn't remember! Aww crap, and she'd definitely talked to her before. More than once. Meaning it was out of reason to ask for her name again. She'd just have to...well, wing it. Glancing after the teacher, she sighed, before turning to Alessa with a wide, warm smile. She couldn't deny a friend in need! She stepped to one side, out of the way of anyone moving about in the corridor, giving the brunette her full attention. "Of course. What do you need?"

Maths class had never been the girl with glasses’ forte. Today’s notes were a bit… frugal. In fact, she’d been wondering during the last hour whether or not she was able to figure out the best course of action without help. The final decision was obvious.

The classroom was emptying. “Thank you” was the very first thing Alessa said, reassured, then her voice, fast at some points, hesitating at others, betrayed some underlying stress despite her smile. “So, huh, Selena, you know how you’re kind of… the romance expert here?” she asked, and her voice almost became a whisper. A fast whisper. “I-I have a crush on a guy. Long story short, we… well… we met during Valentine’s day, and we had a good time, and I’d like to see him again, but it’s been over a month, and we didn’t really have a chance to speak though he studies here at Meadowview too, because I’ve been very very busy lately, and maybe he was, too, so…”
The breath came a little late. Still, she looked cheerful, and almost giggled. “I don’t even know where to start! You must know what it’s like. So, err, what do you think I should do?”
She looked a bit silly. And excited. She hadn't even let the pale-eyed girl a chance to interrupt her.

As the classroom emptied, Selena smiled back at Alessa's thanks. It was the least she could do, to help a friend! Her expression softened to something more serious, however, as Alessa's tone took a clearly stressed route. Her voice wasn't level, and the speed varied - Selena placed a hand on the girl's shoulder, as if to calm her down. A crush? Ahhh, that explained it all. The corner of her lipss twitched upwards in the hint of a smile, suggestions already pooling into her head, but the raven-haired girl let Alessa finish before she spoke, her smile having grown wider in the meantime.

"Well," she started, removing her hand from Alessa's shoulder to place on her hip instead. Over a month was a long time, she could understand the girl's concern. "We need to set something up. It's been too long for you to just start talking again without it seeming awkward, so you need to...just 'happen' to run into each other, y'know?"

She paused, tapping a finger against her lips in thought, resisting the urge to suck it in the childish manner she so loved to, "Who's the lucky guy? I'll see if I can sort something."

The girl was self-conscious enough to notice her own level of excitation. She smiled apologetically. "I've been kinda keeping that for myself during that time, it's just that, don't worry.... hah, I feel like a little girl all over again." It would have been much more embarrassing if she hadn't been dealing right now with a girl she knew was familiar with this. Otherwise...

Alessa also moved her hands, holding them in front of her chest. "Right, but the whole problem is how to make it happen without having it look too forced! I'm really glad you're willing to help me." She scratched the back of her neck innocently. "So, huh, do you have anything in mind to help me run into Damian Cole?"

A little girl? Selena smiled knowingly. She knew exactly what Alessa meant, and that was a good thing. It meant that it was genuine, and it was...well, it was almost fun to experience such a feeling. However, Selena's smile soon faded as a name was mentioned, her eyebrows furrowing in concern. Bringing a hand to her forehead, looking extremely thoughtful in a very serious way, Selena sighed, taking a few moments before dropping her hand again and looking back to Alessa.

"Alessa," she started, her tone indicating something wasn't right, "Believe me when I say Damian Cole isn't worth it. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Just...don't."

She'd thought it was love - he'd been really sweet, wooing her, treating her nicely. But then had come the shameless flirting whilst she was there, and any thoughtfulness had quickly faded. She'd since learnt to be more careful. "You can do better than that, hon."

Selena’s reaction startled Alessa, but only a little. “… really?” she asked, not quite convinced. It couldn’t be as bad as it sounded. “Errr… but… he’s been so nice with me.”
Little did she know how many girls he’d been nice with. Maybe even he ignored the number.

It was a brutal comment, and her fuzzy feeling was acting very much like a wall in this case, Selena's advice hardly scratched it, while the other reinforced it with all the arguments she could find. She was too happy about the situation to snap out of it so easily. “He noticed me the first time! We talked, we ate dinner, we laughed, we had fun, and there were so many other more interesting girls there, and and and… he's the first one who noticed me like that the first time, you know”, she explained plaintively, as if she could make up the other girl’s mind on the matter, ignoring the hints that yes, she did know Damian well enough in that way.

Selena nodded. "Really."

She could understand Alessa's confusion. Damian tended to...well, do that. He was a pretty good-looking guy, everyone knew that. And to start with he'd be sweet as sugar, treating you to odd little gifts and nice meals. He soon got bored enough, though, and suddenly couldn't be bothered with you anymore. Still, despite that, Selena still felt her cheeks grow warm talking about him.

"...He does that, Alessa," she sighed, wanting to ward the girl off of Damian, but at the same time not make her upset. "He'll get bored soon enough and move on to the next girl." she explained, small pout on her face. Ugh, Damian. A matchmakers nightmare.

It would have been reasonable to take Selena’s words seriously. Alessa, however, wasn’t being reasonable. She just didn’t want to be reasonable just yet. “He can’t be that bad…” she replied, clinging to her words. She waited a bit before talking; her eyes drifted to the ground while she held the back of her neck with her left hand.

It hurt a bit, but she had to make a compromise between her and the pale-eyed girl’s interest. That was the first step towards admitting there could be some truth in what she was telling her, but it would be a gross mistake to think she would take another step anytime soon.
“Oh, please… give us the benefit of the doubt. Just… just tell me what you would have told me if it weren’t Damian… alright?”
Pity was all she asked for. She just wanted the matchmaker to at least pretend she was doing her job. “If it doesn’t work out, I will only have myself to blame, but I think it can work out, and you never know ‘til you try, because you can’t win anything if you don’t take part to anything… right?”

Selena sighed. SHe didn't want to hurt Alessa's feelings, certainly didn't want to lose a friend. But she had to make the girl understand - it was her duty! Hands clenching into fists of frustration, Selena shuffled on the spot, voice becoming a lot more whiny. She had to get Alessa to understand, she had to! Selena's childish side was coming out, and anyone that knew Selena knew that she could be very, very childish. "He is that bad, Alessa! I'm trying to save you here!"

Benefit of the doubt? "I don't want you to get hurt!" Selena blurted out, beginning to get more and more frustrated as Alessa persisted onwards, "I don't want to tell you, because I don't want you to go out with him. I don't want you to get hurt!" Selena wants, Selena wants, Selena wants. She was like a small child demanding something, not considering the other girl's opinion. "I don't want you to see him!"

There was only so much Alessa could stand before her own guilt kicked in. In this case, it took quite longer as usual. She’d shaken her head desperately, overwhelmed by the reaction of the matchmaker, her lips moving imperceptibly. Selena threw a tantrum like a child, and Alessa acted like a scolded little girl, trying to find the energy to deny the evidence.
When the black-haired girl calmed down, her ears would pick up another voice than hers, at last, a faint and almost afraid voice coming from the brunette’s lips, saying again and again: “I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m so sorry! Please calm down… please calm down, I’m sorry!”

Then, she realized she looked silly holding her arms defensively against her chest, overreacting to an overreaction. The next uncertain words that left her throat reached normal volume again: “His… his birthday, I know it’s soon, can I still at least go to his birthday party…? Please, don’t get angry again, if I shouldn’t see him, then I guess I won’t…”
Yes, she had difficulty dealing with conflicting opinions.

Selena was breathing heavily when she finally stopped talked, and Alessa finally got a few words in. The dark-haired girl, calmed a little, cheeks red in embarrassment at her slight...outburst, as she sighed in defeat. She'd just made a fool of herself, again. Why did it happen so much to her?

His birthday party? She remembered Damian fleetingly mentioning something, and turned to her bag, rifling around for a few moments before pulling out her diary, flicking through the pages. She soon found it, recorded religiously as she had to, and was glad to find that she was free that day. Snapping her diary shut, she looked up to Alessa, with a slightly apologetic smile. "Okay, you can go to his party - but I'm coming too, to make sure you don't get yourself into too much trouble."

Hearing Selena’s reply, Alessa nodded shyly. “That’s fine, then. I must go now, so see you there?”
Her smile slowly came back, half forced, half genuine, as she still enjoyed the fact the girl would worry for her well-being. A couple steps, and she turned back to look at the black-haired girl again to offer an apology of sort. “Thank you for the advice. If… if it doesn’t go well and you see me whining, you have the right to say “I told you so”, okay? You can even roll your eyes, too! No, really.”
She needed the bit of self-derision to built more confidence back.

Selena smiled at Alessa, nodding her head. "Sure."

Alessa began to walk off, and Selena sighed, making as if to walk after her and say something before the girl herself turned around and thanked her. And Selena suddenly felt guilty - she'd only wanted a quick bit of advice, and here Selena was, putting her down like this. She felt...she felt a little horrible. But she managed to keep smiling. "I'd never do that, Alessa. I just...I'm just worried for you, yeah?"

She widened her smile for a moment before giving a quick wave, turning and heading off to her next class. She really needed to learn to phrase her advice better.
