Canoake huffed. Out of all the jobs she could have drawn today, she had kitchen duty. Which wouldn't have been so had except that it was put duty. She had to rake out all the old ashes and some of it would be used to make a black paste for whatever it was needed and the rest had to go to the rubbish pile. And since the Head woman was in the kitchens today so there was no way she was going to get out of duty. Canoake couldn't even dress lovely because she was going to get filthy. Pulling her hair up in a loose bun, she rolled her sleeves up and started looking for the shovel and bucket.
Ugg.
And it was soo hot! Stifling with all the ovens going.
Canoake was not in a pleasant mood.

Sharkal seemed to get roped into kitchen duty a lot these days. He wasn't sure what it was that made the higher-ups think dishes would keep him out of trouble, but it certainly hadn't protected him from a very provocative weyrling. The blond's nose was finally healing. The bruising had faded and while it would remain crooked, he no longer winced every time it was brushed. That didn't mean he forgot about it, though.
Grumbling under his breath, Shark sat hunched over his tub of murky water, elbow deep in dishes as he splashed. No one ever said he had to be neat about it. Given the opportunity to display his displeasure, the weyrbrat was sure to seize it. Shimmer had disappeared for the day, her boy's mood was so foul even the gold firelizard decided it was in her best interest to be elsewhere. Probably guarding her egg, Shark decided with a sigh.
"Shards," he grumbled, before glancing around. "What I wouldn't give to be anywhere but here."

Canoake was not thrilled. The only shovel she could find had a repaired handle. And it seemed like the ash pits hadn't been cleared in ages. Kicking a stray stone, she muttered and tried not to throw the pail in the corner. The day was too nice for once and without anyone she knew to sweet talk her chores into, Canoake would be stuck all day missing it.
And shards if she was going to get on her hands and knees to make that pit shine! A drudge could handle the rough of it.
She glanced over, recognizing Sharkal as he starting on his own duties. Personally, she would have rather had the dishes than getting dirty like some pig in the wallow. Trying not to grit her teeth, she took a large shovel full of ashes and dumped them in the pail
Just then, the water splashed over and got the floor wet.
"Oi, there! Keep your chores and your mess on your side of the kitchen! I don't want to clean up anything you mess up!" Canoake huffed angrily.

"Don't tell me what do do, wher-face!" Sharkal snapped back, whipping around to shoot Canoake a dirty look. He recognized a fellow candidate when he saw one, but as far as he was concerned, Telgar didn't need any women mucking up their Impressions when there wasn't a Queen present. Especially women that didn't even come from the Weyr; a Telgar Queen should go to a Telgar girl, born and bred. (There were just so many things wrong in this Weyr these days.)
"I ain't cleanin' it up, so either you do, or you stop all your bitchin'." The blond wrinkled his nose into an ugly snarl, hands still working as he locked gazes with the busty young woman. Busty indeed, Shark decided, wrinkling his nose a little further before glancing back down at his dishes. One would think he'd might learn to stop antagonizing after recent events, but perhaps the small capacity of the weyrbrat's immediate memory discarded things long term.
"'Sides," he drawled, sniffing haughtily, "yer the cleaner here, wherrie."

Wher-face? Wherrie? By the first Egg, who did he think he was?? Canoake hissed angrily under her breath and took a good look at the other worker. Ah... Sharkal. A dim-glow for sure. "What's wrong Shark? Need another smack to the face?"
She was not a big girl but she had offered her fair share of hits. Growing up in the weyr, you got knocks and you gave them out. Drawing herself up, she scooped some of the wet soot and with a wicked grin on her face, tossed them on the dishes he was cleaning.

Sharkal hissed right back, baring his teeth in an ugly snarl. He had a pretty face, bright blue eyes, blond hair and strong jawline, but nothing ruined a good look like a crooked nose and a vicious expression. The candidate was nothing if he wasn't aggressive, after all, and nothing brought that out like a good threat.
Nostrils flaring, the weyrbrat tossed his plate back into the murky dishwaster and growled, nothing shy of a cornered animal. "I dare ya," he hissed, getting to his feet as she threw the lump of soot into his dishwater. "Shardit, you dimglow! I was cleanin' those. I ain't cleanin' them again, you blazing fool!"
Sharkal straightened himself and stalked over, his courage sitting in his belly like a lump of firestone. It wouldn't rest heavy for long, so he might as well act before he lost the nerve. Grabbing Canoake around the arm, he gripped tightly and hissed. "Stop makin' my life harder. I ain' done nothin' to you, so stop yer shardin' complainin' and clean the mess you made, girl."
Ahhh, Shark. Someone was feeling his oats today.

Canoake gasped as Sharkal grabbed her arm hard enough to leave bruises. Angrily and with all her strength, she did have some muscle to her after all, she pushed into him and then twisted away. Shark was always a dull knife on the kitchen table and this just proved to her.
That first he would pick a fight with a rider, even a female rider, and now to abuse a fellow candidate. She wasn't sure who had started what but she was going to figure out a way to fix it. "Scorch you, Sharkal. I wasn't doing anything to you and you had to come splashing that blasted water and making the ashes wet. You can do your chores and then some! I would rather deal with another task or take the punishment than help you out!"
