Drifting along through the currents, Swimdeep dove down to the silt and rocks at the ocean floor looking for some seaweed to nibble. It had been a long trip from his familiar territory, but with food growing scarce, he'd had to make the decision to move. Hopefully the mers in this vicinity were friendly and willing to accept a new stallion in their midst. He drifted along with the current, grazing on what kelp he came close to.

 Bubbles swam along, humming and bobbing in between rocks and under coral formations on the reef, her little fish friends swimming and darting along with her. This place had been her home for some time now and it suited her just perfect. Their weren't many dangers close to shore, other than the bad tempered mers that came around once in a while. And with her home here, she could easily satisfy her curiousities about the ones on land. If she got bored, all she had to do was stick her head out and see what was going on. Seemed like a perfect place to her!
She was just about to round a corner when she caught sight of a stranger and she quickly hid behind the nearest rock, her fishy friends scattering. Her head peeked out just enough for her to be able to see the new mer stallion. Obviously it was hard to tell if he was nice or not just by watching but she wasn't gonna risk her hide, or fins, to find out just yet. She'd watch for now.

Swimdeep nibbled a little more seaweed then began to move along, heading in the direction of the hidden mare. Finding a nice rock, he settled down, curling his tail around, to rest after a long swim. He nickered pleasantly at the fish that came about, amused by them but meaning no harm.

Bubbles ducked back behind the rock when he started to move towards her and then peeked up over the rock at him again when he settled down. He didn't seem like he wanted to hurt anyone, but that could easily be a disguise. After glancing around and finding a safe route that she could use as an escape route if needed she moved out from behind the rock a little more. "Who're you?"

Swimdeep looked up at the question, surprised to see another mer already. He shifted positions on the rock, casting a wary glance about to see if the mare was alone or just a welcoming party to an ambush. "My name is Swimdeep. I didn't mean to intrude on your territory. My own has become scarce with food so I had to leave. I'm hoping to find a new home here and be welcomed in your herd." Had that done it? Would it stave off any attacks from hostiles not looking to share?

Bubbles wrinkled her nose at him and tilted her head. "Herd? What's a herd? And I don't have any territory, I just live here, doesn't mean I own it. I don't care if you're here as long as you don't attack me or my friends. My name's Bubbles, nice to meet you Swim. Strange name." After brief introductions she turned and swam off, her fishy friends rejoining her, seeing as there was no danger and they swam off around the corner to continue exploring. Normally she'd be more welcoming to her own kind but from the ones she's met in the past, there seemed no point. They all would leave eventually and leave her here to be with her true friends. "How long do you think this one will stay, hm? I give him a week. No? Fine two weeks tops and then just wait, he'll disappear like he was never here to begin with. Just like the rest."

No herd? The mare lived alone? Swimdeep swam after her, tired as he was. "Wait a moment, Bubbles. I wouldn't attack you. I'm not hostile like some mers. You're alright with me staying here? I could help protect you and your friends while I stay, if that's alright with you." He wanted to earn his keep, after all, and this mare was alone. She could be an easy target for the more vicious mers out there.

He was following her? Strange. "Protect me? From what? The vicious coral monster? I don't need protection, me and my friends here are very capable of taking care of ourselves. Unlike you, stranger, we know where the hiding places are and how to avoid danger. Plus danger is kind of rare around here. Most of those mers prefer open waters with bigger prey. On another note, you'd only be 'protecting' me for a couple weeks because then you'd be leaving. Everyone leaves sooner or later." The mare continued on swimming, staying ahead of him, and snatching at stray pieces of kelp when she could.

Swimdeep was taken aback a little by the mare's words. "I don't have to leave, unless you want me to. I'm hoping to be able to settle somewhere." He followed after her, keeping distance but staying in range to talk. "You could show me some hiding places while I stay." The mare confounded him, but he decided he liked her personality. It had been awhile since something or someone had made him smile. Plus, he didn't feel right just swimming off to leave a mare defenseless, no matter her claims to being able to take care of herself.

"Show you some hiding places...Why so you know where to find me when you wanna take a bite out of me?" She eyed him suspiciously and kept her distance. "Don't forget you're still the stranger here and just because I said I don't own the entire ocean doesn't mean I rightly trust you. Once I determine you're trustworthy then we'll see what happens. I've had my good nature taken advantage of before and it's not happening again no matter how nice someone seems."
Once Bubbles warmed up to people she was one of the sweetest mers you'd ever meet. Always smiling and kind but due to past events she was more weary of when new mers came into the area and her guard was up until she could trust them fully or until they decided to leave. Whichever came first.

"Well, just show me one good place to hide and I'll use that and leave the rest to you," Swimdeep said, hoping to compromise. "I wouldn't bite you. I don't eat other mers. Don't even really like fish, unless there's no kelp available. I'm sorry someone hurt you in the past. I really just want a place to live in peace."

"I'm sure once you hang around here long enough you'll find decent places to hide. Didn't you just say you would protect me? How can you protect if you're hiding? You just keep digging yourself a hole over there skippy." Bubbles slowed when she spotted a nice little area covered in kelp spots and swam down to have an afternoon snack. "Don't worry about me. This place is the right place for what you want because it is peaceful."

Swimdeep floated in the current, watching the mare. "Well, I sort of meant a nice hiding place to sleep in." He looked down at the kelp and eventually found one to nibble on without encroaching on Bubbles' space. "I would protect you, though. I'd fight whatever wanted to hurt you or your friends so you could get away. It seems like the right thing to do."
