Emery was presently fishing. Or she was supposed to be anyway, seated on a bench at the kiddie fishing pond in a park, with her black book under her like a stool and a fishing pole in her hands. Really, the toddler couldn't care less about trying to catch fish, particularly fake ones - that was plenty easy when one had a shark boy for a brother (though he preferred the ocean and real fish). Actually, she couldn't care less about anything, being her, but that's not important here.
The toddler kicked her legs back and forth, looking at the people wandering around as she fished in the play area. It was just set up as part of a contest someone was running, but she was expected to try (her Mama expected her to do something today so she was doing something and putting effort into it. Well, as much as fake fishing takes).

Alair liked going to little kid events. Not because he felt like a little kid, but because for a little bit it seems like the shadow's disappeared for a bit. No worrying about his Dad, no fear that the Templars were out to get him, no fretting over the nightmares that plagued his sleep. Of course the down side was that whenever his mind did trick him into seeing some kid as a random corpse from his dreams it made him feel twice as bad. Twice as stupid for not being able to figure out how to save them, or worse, bringing death quicker.
But mostly the sunshine and laughter helped. He actually managed to put aside the mask he had started wearing, sitting instead on a bench with it in his hands.
On the the next bench over, a little girl was fishing in the pond, part of the event no doubt. Idly Alair watched her, tossing the line into the water. As it expertly sailed into the mouth a fake fish, he couldn't help but smile slightly. "Good job," the words slipped out before he could stop them.

"Thank you." Emery said politely, reeling in the fish before putting it back. She wasn't doing this for the prizes - didn't care that that was one of the big prize fake fish that she was supposed to catch. It was just a fake fish, she could get it whenever she wanted.
"Do you want to try?" the toddler offered, holding out her rod to him.

The teen shook his head. "No thanks, I think they would count it as cheating," he replied, setting the mask down next to him. "Besides," he added ruefully, "I don't think I'd be any good at it."
Alair fell silent for a bit, casting about in his mind for something to continue talking about. He wasn't exactly sure what to talk about with a toddler. "Uh..." he managed to say intelligently.

"That's okay. I'm just doing this to do something. I don't need to win. The Lady said I can fish as long as I want." Emery said, kicking her legs.
"Why wouldn't you be good at it? It's not hard. Watch." she said, holding the little fake fishing pole out and moving it down a bit to hook a fish, pulling it up. "See?" she said, before putting it back in the water and trying again.

Alair nodded. "Well. I suppose I can try. Just.. don't laugh if I can't do it as well as you, okay?" He said, giving in to the strange toddler.
Grabbing his mask, he moved over to the toddlers bench, watching intently. It would be really embarrassing if he couldn't hook a fish when this kid could.
Glancing over at her, Alair gave a little smile. "I've never been fishing before," he commented.

"I have." she commented, "My brother is a shark." Emery leaned forward, watching as he fished for the toys. "I like your mask. It has a long nose. May I try it on?"

Alair fiddled with the fishing stick. It was a whole lot harder than it looked like. Half the time he got the fish and went to pull it up, only to lose it just as it broke the surface of the water. "Heh..." he half-chuckled. "I'm not really good at this..." he apologized.
The teen started at Emery's sudden question. "Uh.. Well.." the boy glanced at Emery then at the mask, torn. "I...suppose...so........" he finally said. There wasn't really any good reason not to let her despite the inherent reluctance to share something so personal.

"That is okay." Emery assured him, reaching out to help him hold the rod correctly and get a fish. "You just need practice."
"Thank you." the orange haired tot said politely, reaching out to take the mask and put it on carefully.

"Ehh.." Alair followed the girl's suggestions and soon a fake fish was dangling from his pole. "It worked. Thank you."
Uneasily the teen watched the little girl play with his mask, fighting the urge to snatch it back off of her face.
"You look like a baby bird like that," he finally managed to say, meaning to be light an nonchalant. His attempt failed and the sentence came out more strangled sounding than anything else.
