Speech, a gift that most wolves took for granted, capable of using their voices whenever they desired. Carpet however had never spoken, words though he had learned them had never left his lips. Sounds such as growls, whimpers, and snarls escaped with a mild 'chuffing' sound that left his throat vibrating oddly and making him wish he hadn't bothered to intone his opinion. Still despite this major fault he managed well enough with what he did possess. He was a strong able bodied male, a good hunter as proved by his days spent as a lone.
His body language and eyes and perhaps a dash of pity had gained him a few bedmates in his time as well. Yes all in all life wasn't too bad, but it could be better. After all when one had no sound but the sound of ones own breath...it made things like loneliness feel oppressive. He needed to stop his wandering and settle down, the trouble was where. He had no family he knew of, and had no idea how any pack might accept a mute. It was with these uncertain thoughts in mind that he sniffed about and found the edge of a territory. He paused for a moment cautiously before letting out a soft sighing sound and crossing over.

Bryna was not a guard duty that day, but she had drifted down the edge of the river for a drink and after had sat on the top of a hill that, long ago, had been her perch for deciding to make Draug Faroth her home. She smiled slightly and tilted her head back to allow her face to catch the few rays of sun filtering down to her. She had in the time she had been present found another new member-- or, to be honest, introduced one who had found her-- and now was preparing to present pups to the pack as well.
Her smile widened in pleasure and she glanced down at her belly, barely rounding with pregnancy. She and Triton had made a better pair than she had even imagined--
She looked up sharply as movement caught her eye and stayed focused on the area until the form parted between the trees again. A wolf, certainly. The second one who crossed into the packlands apparently without care. She raised to her feet, standing statue-still for a moment, then descended the rise to go greet this new wolf and see if his business was as fruitful as the last had been.
"You have crossed into packlands," Bryna called, eyeing the male now that she was closer. An odd pelt, but no odder than some she had seen. "May I help you with directions, or were you looking to speak with the Alpha of Draug Faroth?"

Carpet paused when he caught the scent of another wolf, his ears pricked and he watched as she appeared to one side. He sat down and let his gaze sweep over her trying to convey this was a friendly meeting. When his eyes fell on her rounded stomach a slow smile spread over his muzzle. A polite pregnant female, doubtful then that this was one of the dangerous or bloodthirsty packs. Still he was wary enough that his hind legs were ready to spring him up and propel him away.
He gave a soft nod in acknowledgement that he had crossed the territory and then lowered his nose and made a soft sniffing motion. He glanced further in at the territory and then softly tilted his head in a gesture of curiosity. He wanted to explore further in, perhaps meet this alpha of hers. Draug Faroth...so that was this pack's name he gave a soft nod.

Bryna's brow furrowed at the odd antics of the male before her, and she tilted her head harshly in puzzlement and attempted deciphering. However, Bryna's dam didn't raise stupid children, and she soon understood that-- whether he opted not to or could not-- this wolf was not about to begin speaking like anyone else. That raised other questions, but they were unimportant compared to the business at hand. If he was going to visit, they could wait if they needed to be asked at all.
He had nodded at the offer of help or meeting the Alpha, then nodded again after he had looked beyond her. She turned to survey what was behind her, then looked back to the male curiously. Yes, what?
"You want to know what's beyond our borders?" She tested, eyes narrowed slightly. It might look like suspicion, but the look was more a product of the fast scenarios her mind was presenting as to what his gestures could mean. The look meant he wanted to go beyond her, or had to-- she thought. But he had nodded again. She waited for his answer, then slowly added, "You want to enter our lands in order to cross through them?"

Carpet watched her wondering how long it would take for her to figure out that there would be no words forthcoming, no name though he knew his own. He flicked his head up at her in a nod when she asked her question. When her eyes narrowed his tail gave a quick wag hopefully reassuring her.
Then she asked the real question, two actually, but when she asked him if he wanted to enter the lands he stood up and opened his mouth. 'Yes' he longed to say but all that came out was a wheezy rasping noise like the wind rustling through a dry hollow log. He sighed and looked down annoyed with himself for even trying. When she mentioned crossing through and away he frowned and shook his head sitting down.
No he didn't want to keep passing through, traveling on and on, it was a big lonely world out there. He didn't like being alone anymore, he never had infact but it had taken him ages to figure out how to express himself with no voice. Once he had mastered that act he had found that most wolves were cruel or intolerant of those without a voice with which to defend themselves.

Bryna's narrowed eyes vanished the moment he stood, and the rasp that followed assured her that this was a wolf without voice. Without sound. She nodded slightly to herself as she eyed him, then sat slowly and carefully on her haunches as well.
"You're looking for a place to stop. A place to stay for a while," she confirmed. "You're interested in Draug Faroth."
She paused a moment for signs of reply, then nodded. "I can show you our lands, if you'd like, so you can decide how you like them. Then, if you like what you see and what you hear, I can take you to Haku and see about finding you a place to stay." She shrugged one shoulder. "Or move on, as you see fit. Though I feel I should point out our lands are plentiful and our pack close-knit. It's a good, strong family here."

Her words were wonderful, almost dream like a close knit pack with strong family bonds sounded heavenly. Except of course the flip side was that they probably wouldn't much appreciate an intruder like himself trying to join in. Still he managed to nod towards her and offered a smile before moving forward a bit and hoping she would lead the way.
This land did indeed look plentiful, but of course he had seen everything from the most barren to the most lush. It wasn't the land that mattered so much to him as the wolves who occupied it. This pack didn't seem unnecessarily cruel or prone to strange and strict rules. He would have to explore it for himself, and then he would have to prove that despite having no voice he had many other qualities that could serve them.

Bryna had no trouble taking point, lifting to her feet and then walking ahead of him at a steady pace. She would try to bring him through some of the important, or lovely, areas of the lands, and they had quite a few, the main dens not included. Would Haku even be at the dens, or did he have duties elsewhere? For a moment she tried to remember, then shook it off. She would find that out later regardless; she didn't need to harp on it now.
"We do a great deal of hunting across the territory, depending on what that part of the season offers most plentifully. Pack members are allowed to do their own hunting, of course, but we do large pack hunts as well for the bigger prey, especially when we have young mouths to feed." She glanced back. "We'll have two litters soon, so I think our large pack hunting may increase slightly in frequency."
She looked back ahead and paused at the crest of a small hill, gesturing with her muzzle. "Beyond there are the meadow hunting grounds. As I said, we have various kinds of hunts, both for forest hunting, and in the grass. Boar, deer, and elk are common pack hunt meals, but there are smaller and more docile prey for single hunts."
When Bryna looked at Carpet, this time it was to assess his physique. "You look like a capable hunter in your own right, but pack hunting would suit you better." She walked around him once and stopped again. "You can't take down larger prey on your own, and without a voice you can't flush prey, though I suppose it does allow you added benefits for stealth." Her voice wasn't condescending, merely honest. Bryna often spoke her mind, mostly because she almost never saw a reason to censor her words. "No accidental noise. Still, you would get a considerable deal more from a pack hunt than hunting alone."
That assessment done, she turned and headed towards the distant sound of water, nodding to herself. "The forest hunting grounds are closer to the dens, though our members are welcome to hunt wherever on our lands. It's simply easier to have a designated place for hunting, for pack purposes."

Carpet followed Bryna along listening to her and looking around carefully as they went. The territory did indeed seem to span out and cover plenty of terrain. He decided that Bryna would be a good wolf to turn to should he join this pack, she seemed to understand him without words. It was one of those things he supposed, some wolves simply knew how to communicate in silence and others needed words. His tail wagged at the mention of litters, he liked pups though he had never had any of his own (or so he thought).
There was much focus it seemed on hunting, pack hunts, she explained his strengths and weaknesses and he nodded softly. Her words didn't wound, they weren't cruel simply a statement of facts. He looked forward to being a part of a group and learning to hunt in cooperation with them.
A pack oriented around hunts would mean plenty of food for all and a strong sense of bonding between packmates. There was a lot to admire here and he followed Bryna onward towards the sweet sound of water. He licked his lips a bit eager to pause and have a drink already his mind was leaping ahead eager to meet more members of this pack and perhaps be himself accepted.

She fell silent briefly until the river showed through the trees. "There." She stepped from under the cover of the trees onto a section of riverbank unshadowed by the trees that leaned over many large chunks of the river. "This river runs the length of our packlands and beyond. You could conceivably fish here, if you're partial to it, but there are specific times of the seasons where it would be best to do that."
She gazed into the water, spying only a few small minnows in the calmer edge-waters of the river, and one ever-so-slightly larger fish fighting the currents to make it to a calm sidepool across the river. "The rest of the time it's more difficult and the return prize a great deal less."
She looked up at Carpet, then lowered her head for a drink. She had shown him most of the defining features of the pack at this point, with the exception of the den area. It was hard to tell if he was impressed or not, but he should be. If he was looking for a home, this was one of stronger packs for that kind of close bond.
"Are the lands to your liking?" She asked, figuring it would be easier to go with a yes or no question than trying to make him pantomime out some longer answer. "If so, the only place left would be to take you to the dens and introduce you to the Alpha. You're welcome to stay only the night, or longer. We would never turn away a capable wolf if they were interested in joining the pack."
