RavenGossip is a wizarding website founded by Ravenclaws around 2002. A group of six Ravenclaw students designed and launched the site intending to it for House use, indulging the long-time Ravenclaw addiction of Hogwarts gossip and scandal, around which the site was based. Students uploaded stories, pictures, and shared blogs about non-Ravenclaw classmates and offered articles regarding relevant topics such as hair care tips or becoming politically aware. The site flourished.

It was in 2004 that non-Ravenclaw students began to frequent the site, pillaging the password from friends in Ravenclaw and spreading the secret to classmates. Initially irritated about the invasion, the site creators came to terms with the fact that the site would continue to grow with the help of the rest of their classmates, and opened the floodgates by sharing the website’s password with students of all houses. The core writers and coders remained strictly Ravenclaw.

By 2009, RavenGossip had become the singly most used website among students, who habitually logged on at least once a day to upload pictures of classmates, share homework advice and stories, keep blogs about their experiences as Hogwarts students, and comment on articles. The site had veered from its original intention as a gossip website, instead becoming an online student community focused on keeping track of classmates’ activities in a friendly manner, providing pictures and blogs for future memories.

The website’s webmasters change from year to year, the original creators keeping the site in students’ hands upon graduating from Hogwarts. The current webmaster (called the “Gossip Keeper”) is Mason Hailsmen.

The website has five major regions: Ravenline, All Your Base Chatroom, Student Forums, Beyond Measure Blogs, and The Pic Pool.

Ravenline is the frequently updated article section, where select student writers are permitted to post pieces on subjects they feel are relevant to current Hogwarts fads, issues, and needs. Editorials are often on the brewing of pregnancy prevention potions, persuading classmates against wizarding drugs such as “Nemo,” easy spells for fashioning your hair, exposes on Hogsmeade shops that sell certain products, and hundreds of other topics. Students can comment and critique these editorials.

The All Your Base Chatroom is a 24/7 chatroom that allows students to converse at any point during the day or night, even during vacations from the school year. During its busiest times there are often fifty posters logged on at once; during its slow points there are still usually two or three. Because the chatting is uncensored the discussions tend to veer in whatever direction the current chatters choose.

The Student Forums are a collection of forums in which classmates can discuss any topic they wish. Sorted by Entertainment, Personal, Social, and Educational subjects, the forums provide ample room for students to share their knowledge and opinions. Moderators (mostly Ravenclaws, called “Forum Claws”) patrol the forums and keep posting family friendly and relevant.

Beyond Measure Blogs are journals written by students and archived for future reading. Classmates from all houses are invited to write about their experiences or discuss their opinions for other posters to read and comment.

The Pic Pool is a constantly updated stream of pictures uploaded by students throughout the day. Photographs taken by cellphone or camera can be posted directly into the stream along with a brief explanation caption, browsers able to navigate through them by date and upload time. It is not uncommon to see students pause while studying, roaming the grounds, or dancing at Jello Fishes to snap pictures and quickly post them to the Pic Pool for future viewing and informing other classmates of their activities.
