Cat was not a happy hippogriff. The normally-chipper teacher was slumping over his desk with a bag of frozen peas on his head and Ibuprofen in his stomach, working to ease his headache away. He had gotten practically no sleep last night at all, since the young girl he was teaching today had a gift for screaming. He groaned; at least he had made sure to buy earplugs.

As he waited, Cat found himself drifting off to sleep repeatedly. At first he'd resisted it, telling himself that it would make a bad impression, but as time went on, he decided to let it happen. Just a few minutes wouldn't hurt...

Adelle, on the other hand, was quite the happy little student. She bounced through the hallways with a smile on her face, ready to learn whatever it was that the Facility wanted to throw at her. However, she was disappointed slightly when she got to her classroom. Her bandaged wings fluttered disapprovingly and she slowly stepped up behind the man who she supposed was her teacher, leaning over and inspecting him with a soft pout on her face. She reached over and gently poked him on the shoulder before shaking him gently. "Um... 'scuse me? My name's Adelle, I'm- I'm supposed to have a spirituality class here today?"

Cat screamed and jumped up from his sleep, wings flapping enthusiastically and sending him skyrocketing into the ceiling. His head, thankfully cushioned with the frozen peas, hit the ceiling with a dull thud, and the Eilian groaned as he descended back to Earth. As much as it appeared to be, it wasn't his student's gentle prodding that had startled him so. It was just another dream of her, screeching his bloody ears off.

An apologetic smile graced the gray features as Cat landed on his chair a little clumsily, clutching his head. "S-Sorry about that. I can be a little jumpy." Deciding that the peas were rather unprofessional, he quickly tossed them under his desk, preening his hair into place as he talked. "And if you're Adelle, then yes, this is your spirituality class. Welcome," Cat said with a charming smile. Nothing against the girl, but he was eager to get her out of his head.

"So, basically this class is for you to start learning how to control whatever magical talent you possess. Seeing as you're a divine hybrid, you're born with one, although you don't know it. Fortunately," he continued with a twinkle in his eye, "because of my gift, I can tell what you have in my dreams. And you, my dear, have a rather rare talent." He reached behind his desk and brought out a few packages of earplugs and two mugs of chamomile tea with honey. "You can scream at super-sonic pitches, high and loud enough to render someone deaf."

When her teacher suddenly screamed and was launched into the air by his own accord, Adelle screamed as well, though not in the way he'd described, falling backward and staring with large eyes at the hippogriff who had scared the living Hell out of her by doing that. She didn't let it show, of course, and smiled weakly, getting back to her feet and dusting off her black-and-white dress. She fluttered gently, a soft, caring smile on her face at the fact that this man seemed to be in pain, though she wasn't completely sure. No less, that didn't fact.

Adelle's brown eyes widened a bit at the ability that she was told that she had, chuckling weakly. "U-um, are you sure about that? I mean... I used to scream a lot when I was little, and nobody ever went deaf 'cause of it. I mean, Uncle Haley's deaf, but he was already deaf and was born a long, long, long time ago. Like, before me," she explained for no reason other than she could, wiggling a bit where she stood.

"Oh! Thank you!" she squeaked at the tea, sipping at it gently. "A-anyways, what should I call you then, Teacher?" she asked cutely, wiggling a bit once again and giggling softly. "So that I don't call you teacher. Though if I forget your name I might do that again," she added sheepishly.

Cat smiled warmly at Adelle's uncertainty, but waved it away with a gesture. "Don't worry, young lady, I'm very sure. First off, and not to brag, but my dreams are rarely ever wrong. Secondly, a spawn's magical gift usually doesn't develop until they reach pre-teen, and even then only with a bit of training. So even if you were quite the screamer before, that doesn't mean that you don't have the power. Make sense?" he asked as he sipped at his tea with a slight wince. Sometimes he wished that he wasn't such a chatterbox...

He blinked at her comment and set the tea down quickly, smiling apologetically. "Of course, how silly of me. I forgot to introduce myself. You can call me Cat, Adelle. Now," he said with a slightly bracing grin as he stood up from his desk, "let's get started, shall we?" He slipped two earplugs in, then began talking again at the typical unnecessary volume. "For starters, let's see how loud you can scream right now. Go ahead and let loose, as loud and shrill as you can make it."

Adelle listened, wide-eyed and intently, to what the man was telling her, nodding every so often. When he asked if what he had said made sense, she smiled brightly and nodded her head rapidly, making her braids shift a bit from their place atop the rest of her hair. "MmHmm, that makes sense, Mister Cat," she replied sweetly, rocking back and forth on her heels, as unable to sit still as she always was.

She watched as he moved from his desk and plugged in his earplugs, wincing slightly at how much louder he was speaking now. Regardless, she smiled through it, though hesitantly. So... she was just supposed to scream? She frowned slightly to herself, fluttering her metallic wings before taking a deep breath, letting it out with a whoosh. Well, if that was all she was supposed to do, she supposed it couldn't be too hard, right?

Once again, she sucked in a deep breath, and shrieked as loudly as she possibly could.

Cat winced as the girl did as she was told, but thankfully her scream wasn't up to its magical potential yet (though who knows why it would be), and so his head wasn't split into pieces. He smiled warmly at her and gestured for her to stop, removing the earplugs once she had done so. He scratched irritably at his ears before he spoke; the damn things always made his ears feel ridiculously uncomfortable.

"That was good, Adelle. Not super-sonic yet, but good," he said with a reassuring smile. "Your skill is rather hard to get ahold of until you do it correctly for the first time, so don't be discouraged if it doesn't work for a while. What you need to do is make your vocal chords - the things that make it so you can talk," he added, gesturing to his own throat, "- vibrate at a higher frequency so that the noise you make becomes higher and higher pitched until, well, it's super-sonic," he ended a little lamely, smiling awkwardly.

"So I'm going to have you scream again, and this time I want to you take all of your Diligence energy and try and direct towards your throat," Cat suggested as he replaced the earplugs. "That should get us closer, if not there all the way." He smiled at her, gesturing for her to give it her best shot.

Okay, there was definitely one or more things in what Cat had said that went completely over Adelle’s sweet little head. Her brown eyes looked completely vacant as she slowly nodded in response to what Cat was saying, the slightest twinge of a ditzy little smile on her lipsticked lips. “Umm… right. What’s freak-whence-ee? And I don’t think I can make my diligence energy go anywhere; I don’t think. I guess I’ve never tried… well, I have, kinda. I’ve tried to fly, but I can’t make the energy go into my back or my wings or, well, anywhere, I guess. Err… sorry I’m complainin’ so much. I’ll try again.”

She had stopped speaking when her teacher replaced his earplugs, taking a deep breath once again. This time, she let it out as a scream, trying to make it as loud as she possibly could, first, before going up as high in pitch as she possibly could. Still, she didn’t know what he meant about freak-whence-ee, or vibrating her vocal cords faster, or any of it. From what she could tell, however, if she did understand what he was saying, she might actually know what she was trying to get done. She let the note fade sooner than he had told her to, sighing softly. Why couldn’t she be smart like Fitzroy…?

As soon as the explanation was out of Cat's mouth, he felt guilty at the girl's vacant expression. Had he come off as... too science-y? He did admittedly have a bad habit of over-explaining, especially when the topic was the strange powers of spawn. That was the only way he could wrap his head around them, and maybe he had been foolish by expecting all of the spawn to understand the exact same way. They were only kids, after all. He opened his mouth to apologize, only to be cut off by the girl's screech. After he was done wincing, he raised up his hand with a sorry smile, signaling her to stop.

"That was... better. And I'm sorry for not explaining it right. I'll try again. Okay..." Orange eyes fluttered around the room until they found a paper cup, and he quickly walked over to fetch it. "Okay, you probably won't be able to do this yet, but it might make more sense. You see, normal people can just scream really high, and a few opera singers can shatter glass, but you can scream higher and louder than any human. Your voice-" he continued as he placed the cup on a table in front of her, "-has the power to become deafening to the human ear and even push small objects, such as this paper cup." He smiled encouragingly at her. "So now, in essence, I want you to try to move this cup with your voice. Scream as loud and high as you want. Does that make more sense?"

Once again, for at least a moment or two, the only response that Cat got was a vacant expression from his blonde-turned-brunette pupil. As he continued to speak, however, a look of understanding dawned on the girl's purple-speckled face. It was followed by a bright, excited smile as she nodded and clapped her hands slightly, excited now to try again.

"Yeah, yeah, that makes lots more sense! 'N' I think I kind'a know what you're talking about now, so you should put your earplugs in so I can try again!" the girl said excitedly, kneeling down beside the table that the cup had been placed on, grasping the edge of the table with both hands. When she was sure that her teacher had replaced his protective gear, she took in a deep breath of air before shrieking as loud as she possibly could. Her voice got higher and higher, this time reaching a point where it went beyond a normal human's ability to produce sound. However, the note died as she ran out of air, long before it reached any kind of hypersonic level, leaving the girl panting softly. She gave a pout to the cup and looked back up at her teacher.

"Guess I got'ta try again?"
