For hours, Deidre simply stood in an open field of tall grass. The sun's rays being soaked up by her black pelt as a gentle breeze toyed with her mane and tail.

Birds darted overheard, singing the songs of spring. Squirrels chased each other through the tall grass, chattering playfully. Everything about this day painted a picture of pure happiness.

A happiness that couldn't cut through the sorrowful fog that covered Deirdre's heart. She simply watched as the day went by, wanting to partake in all the joy, but unable to. With legs that had long since grown stiff, the mare shifted in her spot. Her hooves leaving deep imprints in the soft earth beneath her. She searched deep within herself for the energy to do something, anything really, but came up dry.

With purple eyes turned skywards, the mare resigned herself to the fate of an observer.

An indigo-pelted mare with markings of cyan and lightning white danced on gleaming silver hooves as she moved through the paths of a forest that was slowly becoming familiar to her. A great deal of this area was woodland, separated by meadows and valleys, the foot of the forest reaching from the base of the mountains to the end of the land itself... Golden sand and bright blue water lay on one side, imposing gray peaks on the other. And all matter of climes in-between, should one care to go exploring them. And Whistle had, in her travels.
After all, if one was questing for a great treasure, it would be wise to look in as many locations as possible. At least, without the use of a map... And sadly, the Fayth mare did not have a map. Nor would one be useful if she did, for most treasure could not move on its own. And her mate -while a great treasure- was certainly the moving sort. Especially if she was gone from him.
I remember that about you... She smiled faintly to herself as she followed a well-worn path from forest darkness to a sunny field. I may not remember everything my love, but I remember that about you...
She hesitated momentarily, blinking her eyes and adjusting to the sudden light. Some ways away -perhaps the middle of the field- there was a painted mare standing as though frozen. She shifted faintly, but did not seem to be filled with any joy at life or a fine spring day.
"Excuse me..." Whistle murmured hesitantly. "I do not mean to intrude upon your solitude... But if I may say, you look rather sad. If it would please you, I would offer a sympathetic ear?"
Though she was enjoying the day, sadness still ate at her heart... The black of forgotten memories crowding her mind until all she had was the sun and wind.. And a name, burning silver like a talisman...
I'm looking for you.. Ballad...
She could certainly understand if the mare did not want her company.. After all, sometimes the best cure was to be alone until one could fight away the sorrow and find the light in their own life without the aid of another... And sometimes it was best to fight or cry it out, or to share it with another and let it lessen as new friends were made... But only the mare could decide...

So caught up in her thoughts was the dark mare, that she did not notice the approach of another. The sound of a soft voice had her ears perking to attention. Her purple eyes shot up, startled by what they found. Another mare had joined her, and the mare appeared to be glowing!

A trick of the light maybe?

"H-hello," softly replied Deirdre, her right front hoof pawing at the grass in a shy manner. Only her timid nature kept her from investigating the mare's glowing further.

Whistle gave a faint smile, deciding the mare was just the shy sort. Slowly she moved further into the clearing, not wanting to startle the other.. But she had asked for permission and the request had gone unanswered, so she drifted nearer in response to the greeting. Perhaps they could have a nice talk, perhaps she'd make a new friend?
Sunlight gleamed on her dark indigo hide, making the glow of her markings seem less in the full glory of the sun. Still there was a soft radiance of cyan from the symbols and her eyes and a gleam of white in the wings on her back.
"Hello." She offered in return. "My name is Whistle.. And you?"

Chalking off the glowing to indeed being a trick of the light, not knowing that she was in fact mistaken, Deirdre let the matter go from her mind and instead studied the approaching mare. Nothing in the female's movements spoke of a threat. In fact, everything about her seemed friendly.

Perhaps this lovely day had grown weary of her sadness marring it's perfect canvas and had sent some this mare to either brighten her mood, or replace her all together? With such lovely coloring, the mare would certainly make for a better picture.

"I am Deirdre," she nervously wet her lips, "It's nice to meet you."

Whistle made a soft, reassuring sound, the kind she used to make for her foals when they woke from bad dreams... Ahh, but that was long ago. Surprising she could remember it, perhaps this land was slowly helping her recover all the memories she had lost? Even now she did not know exactly what had happened, just that the sound was familiar and soothing to her children... Children as lost to her as her mate.
But still she would not sorrow.. She would fight and search and one day, she would find them all again. But that was not the thought for this moment... The painted mare was a sorrowful beauty, and Whistle immediately wanted to help if she could. Not that she knew if it was even possible until the mare spoke of her sorrows... And that was not something one did lightly with a stranger, now was it?
"Lovely to meet you, Deirdre..." She returned with a faint smile. "I do not mean to intrude.. But I am somewhat lost in this new land, and tend to wander... I've not seen you before, and you seem so sad... Perhaps I might offer company and a sympathetic ear?"

Such kind words spilled from this stranger's mouth. How long had it been since someone spoke to her in such a manner? There were the seductive words that fell from the mouths of the stallions who shattered her heart, but these words were different. They were almost... motherly.

This welcoming nature made Deirdre want to just leap without looking. To spill out all the sorrows that clouded her heart and see if this stranger could fix everything. Then she too could match this lovely day.

But such rash actions are what got her into trouble in the first place.

"Company would be nice," murmured Deirdre as she lifted her head and smiled slightly, "It is easy to get lost here."

Whistle shifted slightly, silver hooves ringing with the movement. She always hated distress in others, but she supposed it was her nature. Her original purpose -for lack of a better word- was to ease someone's loneliness, give him hope and comfort... It hadn't been a fault in either of them when they'd fallen in love. Had this young mare perhaps had her heart broken? She had a look similar to the one Whistle's daughter had worn when her mate broke her heart...
Ahhh, but that was long ago. And not something to think about now. The faint smile was encouraging, and Whistle nodded slightly as she returned it and drifted a little closer.
"That I have found out, several times." Whistle agreed to her statement with a soft laugh. "Still, I feel I am gaining my bearings in this land. And it is quite lovely once you get to know your way around..."
She glanced back the way she had come for a moment, flicking her tail. "I find the mountains are lovely to visit, but I spend much of my time along the river or in the outer reaches of the forest. Are you fairly new to this area?"

A soft laugh fell from Deirdre's lips in response to the mare's first words. Getting lost was something the dark mare knew well. How often had she thought she was heading towards one destination, only to end up in a different place? It was her own fault for letting her mind wander instead of focusing on where she was going.

Her purple eyes tracked over the area as she she listened to Whistle's words. "I have never been to the mountains..."

She searched her mind for a reason why, but came up blank. Whistle's question drew her back. "Am I new? I suppose."

A gentle breeze toyed with the ends of her mane as she cocked her head back, her gaze upon the mountains in the distance. "I needed a fresh start, and fate brought me here."

Lost. Whistle winced at the fact that in many ways, she was still lost. Granted, she was beginning to know her way around this strange land.. But she wasn't exactly sure how she had come here.. She didn't remember what had made her leave her home and family.. Still couldn't remember most of her family, if the truth were told. There were shadows in her mind, memories hidden by whatever had happened to her. Still, she remembered most of her wandering, most of her travel. Of being alone and wondering where everyone she loved had gone. Because she knew that she had loved ones, could feel their absence in her heart.
The Mountains... She smiled faintly at the other mare.
"They are beautiful." Whistle replied without hesitation. "They seem very distant and severe and imposing.. But there is a stark beauty there, and little valleys of flowers and peace in-between cold stone giants... I enjoyed my journey through them."
She supposed she was new? The need of a fresh start Whistle knew all too well.
"I hope this is the right place for your new start then." Whistle offered with a gentle smile. "In many ways, it is the place for my new start... Whether I needed one or not, I have it now. And I intend to make the best of it. If there is anything you feel I may aid you in, will you let me know?"

Valleys of peace and flowers... Such a lovely scene those five simple words pictured in the mare's mind. Isolated meadow that would glisten with morning dew under the sun's rays as the scent of the wild flowers mingled in the air. One day she hoped to see such a place, perhaps even live there. Surely no pain would touch her heart there.

Between the imagery in her mind and the other mare's kind words, a genuine joy touch a heart that had held nothing but sorrow for the longest time.

"Your words hold such kindness," a shy smile pulled at the dark mare's lips, "They remind of things that a mother would say."

Whistle shifted on her hooves, thinking of the winding path her life had taken her down since its rather unusual start so many years ago... There was only ever one end to her journey, and she hoped he would find her here soon. I miss you, Darling...
He always had before, so she had faith he would do so again. Faith that some of her family would move to this land, which seemed much less tumultuous than their former home. She hoped that was true, though she had no doubt this land also held its own dangers. Still, if she could offer this new friend a respite from that, she would know joy.
The younger mare's words made her smile. "I am a mother, and I do have that tendency to try to care for anyone who crosses my path.. One of my sons has scolded me for it more than once..." She gave a soft laugh and shook her head. "Do let me know if I trouble you, child.. That is not my wish at all, I would much rather offer you anything you might require, whether they be words or friendship."

"Why would he scold you for acting in such a kindly manner?" murmured Deirdre, clearly puzzled. Kindness practically dripped off this mare, and she could not help but want to soak it up like a greedy sponge. She chastised herself for wanting to act in such a manner, comparing herself to a needy child trying to gain the attention of an adult. But, she could not help herself from wanting to. It had been so long, since someone had talked with her in such a manner.

At Whistle's following statement, Deidre began to shake her head. Her curled snowy white mane swaying with the movement. "You are not troubling," her voice dropped to barely above a whisper, "I am quite enjoying your company."

Whistle sighed. Was there but a single word or even a short phrase that could explain the tangle that was the heart of her child? She'd not yet found them all, so of course she could hardly give them to this strange young mare. Still, an explanation was in order, even if it was a puzzling one.
"He has always been of a different nature than I." She sighed. "And indeed, the rest of our family as well. Sufficient to say it is not in his nature to help even a few, let alone all that he may meet. He dislikes my nature, and those he deems 'too tenderhearted for their own good'. There's naught to be said to change his mind either, I'm afraid. I long ago gave up trying."
Drifting slowly closer, she stretched her neck just enough to nose Deirdre's shoulder compassionately. "I thank you for your kind words to an older -and somewhat silly- wanderer like myself. I too am enjoying your company, and it is a pity none of my daughters are along. I feel they would like you immensely."
The indigo mare sighed softly. It was too bad her daughters were not here. She had a feeling this lost soul could use a few friends, and she knew that her children had good hearts. This mare seemed in need of kindness.
