any advice for a new player?

Dunno, not much... Remember that you can dash left and right by double-tapping the arrow key. I've basically x- and c-spammed the enemy and hoped something hits. Works for the early spell cards, but that final one of stage 5 is just brutal... Also dashing will nullify any damage that might hit you, but make sure you don't stop halfway through.

Hold the key in the opposite direction you're facing to block. Beware of guard-crush attacks.

((Facing right? Hold left to block. Vice-versa.)

Heh. I instantly thought of Robot Unicorn Attack after reading that.

Here's some less basic advice:

-Keep your vision centered between you and your opponent.
-Focus more on staying alive than dealing damage. This is one game where button mashing does NOT work.

That's all I have for now.

Also:

- Never underestimate the power of dash and melee attacks.
- Always keep in mind what each of your X attacks and C attacks do. Like any fighting game, SWR is all about PRESSURE, but unlike other fighting games, most pressure you will give and receive in this game comes in the form of barrages of bullets, homing shots and lasers.
- Luckily, you can graze all projectiles (and some physical attacks, too!) by dashing, so DASH OFTEN.
- Once you get them, you might try switching around your card deck, switch some of the character's input attacks around, see what works for you.

Suika used Rock Throw! It was super effective!

Anyway, because of said dashing, as much as people like to think otherwise, it's actually far less about pressure than other fighting games. It's just as much about maneuvering as it is about pressure.

Random tip: For the english patch to work, you MUST update the game with the patch on ZUN's site.

Tip: Don't get used to use only one character. I got used to Cirno's long dash, and I got raped when I tried Komachi's story, normal mode, on SWR because I kept thinking my dash would let me graze those spelllcards and knives.
