As darkness wrapped around the looming stone towers, the undead awakened from their slumber to start the night. The halls were littered with the sleepy remains of immortal warriors flitting here and there, grabbing toothbrushes and towels like hot cakes from the stands servants had placed when the sun still shone bright.

Adrian galloped down the length of the grand stair case casually while running a hand through his damp hair. He was dressed in an impressive suit, that contrasted with the drab dress of the girl at the bottom of the stairs.

He paused, resting a hand on the banister. "Sophie, whats wrong? Did you not like the dress?"

"I told you, theres nothing wrong with this one." She insisted. "Fix your tie. It's lopsided."

The vampiric lord followed her instructions, not bothering with a mirror because he knew the results. He wasn't looking forward to this at all. From what he'd heart of Wizard Howl, the boy was a fickle spendthrift who dressed to the nines at all times.

He looked over his shoulder to nod at a servant. Dinner was prepared, it was a quarter til 9 and in fifteen minutes he was going to meet his 'son-in-law'.

From what Howl knew about Sophie's family, he had decided that they were rich, royal-like, and altogether frightening. This not being an altogether welcoming idea; he had dawdled on what to wear. This was unusual, usually he had an outfit planned out. Meeting one's father in law was unnerving. The wizard wasn't looking forward to this at all.

"Devin, you want to come with me?" He asked his younger brother almost pleadingly. His father had already refused with the excuse that he didn't want to mess things up for Howl and Sophie. Devin on the other hand, was quite eager to meet the girl who'd made Howl tantrum so often.

"Thure, I come! Wear your blue 'nd thilver thuit, Howl!"

Howl gave a smile, and ruffled his brother's naturally messy hair. "Alright, blue and silver it is." He looked at the clock. He had only ten minutes to get ready.

~Implied hurrying, arriving at the castle~

Howl looked especially spruce in his blue suit; especially next to his younger brother, who happened to be wearing short overalls with a green t-shirt underneath. "Do you want to knock first?" Howl asked nervously.

Devin did; He knocked as only a toddler could get away with. Long and loud.

The knock echoed against the walls of the foyer to the point where every vampire on the estate halted to see what fool would dare do such a thing. Adrian waved off the butler and went to open the door himself.

Instantly his blue/silver eyes went to Devin. He was about to say something to the toddler when Sophie stuck her nose through the doorway and smiled at the other boy. "Hello, Howl. Whose this?"

Who indeed? He had expected the boy to show up with his parents, not a younger child. "Please, do come in. The cold isn't good on young hearts."

Howl obviously was oblivious to the fact that Devin's knocking might have offended the family. He gave Adrian a nervous smile before addressing Sophie. "He's my little brother, Devin. My parents apologize for not being able to make it." He knew this was a lie. Zee had made no attempt to come; he had refused completely. Howl hadn't bothered to ask his mother.

"You first, Devi," he gently pushed the toddler inside before following. He looked around and studied the foyer. It seemed like he had been correct. They were royal and frightening. Oh well. "I assume I am addressing my father-in-law?" he asked, looking towards Adrian. "Pleasure to meet you sir. I'm Howell Jenkins." Ah, he was using his proper name. He must have been nervous.

She thought it was odd that they would allow Devin to come with Howl, being younger, but she wasn't going to ask about it infront of Adrian. Sophie smiled at Devin. "Hello, Devin. I like your overalls. They look very smart." The child stepped out of the way so they could come inside.

Adrian's eyes accessed Howl and knew that everything he had been told about the ma-er, boy was correct. He nearly choked. "Father-in-law?" Of course he assumed Sophie was like a daughter to him. Wasn't that the way of things? "Hardly, Mr. Jenkins. I'm Sophie's guardian only."

Pfft, like he was going to tell Howl how he tried to spoil his wife rotten, but she turned him down. In all but techinicality he was her father, but he knew better than to push it. "I hope our food doesn't offend you, Howell. May I call you that? We prefer things rare around here."

Devin gave Sophie a bright smile; almost rivaling the one Howl typically wore. "Fank you," he said pleasantly. "I like your dreth. It bery pretty." Of course, one could never trust a toddler to be a fashion expert. "Thophie! Howl alwayth talkin' bout you!"

Howl was rather surprised at Adrian's speech. Why did this man seem so polite, and yet the wizard got the feeling he wasn't very welcome here? "My mistake," he muttered. "I figured that since you were her guardian you might consider yourself her father." Honestly, he was rather relieved he didn't have a vampire for a father-in-law after all.

"I cannot say I am known for eating much. I prefer rare things as well," Howl said, frowning slightly. He knew the vampire was poking fun at his last name. "Generally I do prefer to go by Howl, unless I am in Wales. However, if it pleases you, you may call me whatever it is you desire." As long as it wasn't dinner, he was fine with it.

Sophie's eye twitched. It was obviously the child was spending too much time with his 'brother'. "Why thank you," she smiled, even if she knew it was a lie. The boy was being polite, after all. "He is? Come on, I'll show you the dining hall and you can tell me if he says anything bad."

"In many ways, yes," Adrian replied. "But in others, no. I view her as a beloved niece who is staying here for an extended period of time. That being, if you so much as step a toe out of line, I will not hesitate to punish you. " With a crooked grin, he pivoted on his heel and followed after Sophie, who was dragging Devin into a large dining hall. Gold gilded off the walls where red candles burned. He walked the length of the table to his seat, pondering. "Wonderful. Then Cook will cook for two and you and I can have a 'steak', Monsieur Jenkins."

"Howl never thay nothing bad!" Devin assured her with another smile. "He thay you pretty, and nice, and loud--and nothy. He call you nothy all the time. But he thay he loveth you bery much," he added, as an after thought. He followed her into the dining hall. "We don't got a dining hall at home," he confessed. "Jutht a dining room. We gonna have dinner with Howl and your Daddy?"

"Oh no, sir," Howl said, quite seriously. "I would never do anything to upset Sophie. You see, she is quite dear to me. I believe my losing her for sometime will have left a lasting effect on me. You needn't punish me; perhaps the people who brought us here would be more worthy of your undoubtedly splendid punishments? I am but a poor wizard; I want nothing more than to make my family happy." Why did Adrian dislike him so? The boy really was trying his best to make a good impression. Had he done something wrong? Said something wrong? A stake would be useful, he thought silently. If only Sophie wasn't around.

"Sir, if it is acceptable, I believe I would rather stay with Sophie and Devin," he paused, clasping his hands together behind his back. He could see no means of escape; this was one situation he could not run from, and the thought of being this vampire's dinner terrified him. "I don't mean I would not like and appreciate having dinner with you, sir, it would be nice to get to know you better--but--I've only just met you, and you--" He decided against finishing the sentence.

"That sounds like Howl," She smiled, knowing full well what he thought of her. At least it was all the truth. Sophie guided Devin to a seat near the far end next to where Howl would sit. "Oh yes, we just have to wait for them to get here. I fear Adrian's trying to scare Howl." She grinned. Honestly, the vampire wasn't as terrifying as he seemed, but of course, her husband would never find out.

Adrian had the mental image of some Arabian trader in mind when Howl spoke. It was all he could do not to call him out on his obvious a** kissing. "Then you may," As he reached the end of the table, he paused to place his hand on Sophie's shoulder and brought her closer. "I will be having breakfast with my family, then afterwards I will rejoin you for pleasantries." He smiled then, a true vampiric smile. It was obvious that Howl was a little more than nervous around him, which gave him the weirdest of feelings.

Adrian bowed and left out through the back, passing Cook as he came to deliver a modest breakfast. Sophie motioned to the food once he left. "Well, dig in!"

"Poor Howl," Devin said, climbing into the seat "He wath thcared even before we came! I picked out his clotheth." The toddler seemed quite proud of this. It wasn't everyday that his older brother allowed him to pick out what he'd be wearing.

Once Adrian and the cook were gone, Howl's stiffness seemed to vanish. He hurried over to Sophie's side. "Sooophie," he whined. "You never told me your family were vampires! I don't think it's safe for me to visit more often; he's worse than Megan, in a polite, frightening way. I'm certain he wants to eat me--doesn't he know eating guests is considered polite in several countries?"

"You did a good job. That suits a charmer, but I think it needs a little more work for Adrian." She smiled and took up a spoon to serve out food.

Sophie huffed. Working was alot harder when you were smaller! And her resolve to actually do it was smaller to. She wanted someone else to serve her in a house this big, but she did it anyway so she wouldn't become lazy. "You never asked," She quipped. "He's not going to eat you, so don't be fooled. Besides, you don't plan on deserting me, do you?" At this, she looked straight at his eyes.

Howl frowned slightly. Why would she expect him to know her father was a terribly frightening vampire? "Of course I never asked!" he snapped. "How should I have known I needed to ask? I know I would have told you if my father was a terrifying vampire that'd want to--wait, you say he doesn't want to eat me?" he paused and stared at her for a moment. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "Desert you? Sophie. I already lost you once. I wouldn't let a vampire stand between us."

He leaned closer to her, and winked. "I mean, not even Fanny can keep me away; even if she does try to clean my room while I'm not looking. I must say, she's almost as frightening as your family here."

Sophie slapped a big gob of asparagus onto Howl's plate. "I don't know, but you should have all the same! And yes, I did say he wasn't going to eat you. So kind of you to listen." It was like talking to a wall until the conversation concerned him. She put her hands on her undeveloped hips, frowning, leaning back as he leaned forward.

"Their not so bad, once you get to know them."

Howl frowned. Not only was he not especially fond of asparagus, but Sophie was being unreasonable. "Then why does he keep acting like he's planning on making me his next meal?" Howl asked, looking from his plate to Sophie. "I hope you don't expect me to eat that." It seemed he was still a picky eater. "I already told Adrian--I'm not hungry."

"Howl dun eat veggieth," Devin informed Sophie helpfully. "He dun eat green."

"Because he's trying to scare you." Or at least, thats what she figured. It was easy enough to see a difference from a teddy bear to a lion the moment Howl waltzed in. She finished up and sat down at the table, a customary pillow underneath her to help her reach it.

"Howl doesn't like anything," She pointed out with a fork. "Except breakfast, and he doesn't even finish that!"
